“March 2012 Trip”
Reviewed 6 April 2012

Had a great week at this resort. We really liked the smaller size of the grounds. The food at the buffet was good ( Juan-Paul) was the best for seating us all the time. We were a group of 6 and he always found us a table. Staff was very friendly. We had an ocean view room, great view. Beach was great. The only real draw backs, was that there are only two alacarte's, and they were small. Hard sometimes to get a table for 6. The lobby had a great coffee machine. Nice place to hang. Would go back to this resort.

Room Tip: Pick an ocean view, unit 4

I stayed at VIK Arena Blanca from April 2-5, 2012 with my husband and 6 year old son. This was our 2nd trip to the DR, the 1st staying at Occidental Grand Flamenco which we LOVED! We had a great time in Punta Cana and couldn't wait to get back. Our trip started off bumpy at the airport with the travel transportation (which was included in our package) claiming not to know who we were. After a very expensive phone call to the US, he immediately knew exactly who we were. Interesting. So off we went to the resort. Arrival was great until we had the same issue with the front desk. It appears they live and die by the almighty voucher...if you don't have your paper confirmation with you, the hotel staff can do nothing. I guess the computer age hasn't made it to the Arena Blanca. Our voucher was late arriving because we booked last minute. After some help retrieving our email from the concierge, we were set to go. We were in Building 1, the furthest from everything but that was okay and expected with our late trip booking. (My husband works for a major airline so we take lots of last minute trips when we know there will be standby seats available.) Our room was disappointing. Outdated decor, 3 single beds, with 2 pushed together for me and my husband. The bed linens looked like they hadn't been updated in 20 years. And the beds were hard as rocks. But we were on vacation and were positive about making the best out of it. The bathroom was pretty nice, decent tub and shower but could have used one of those shower curtain arcs so the curtain didn't hit you when you showered. One night our toilet wouldn't stop running and my husband fixed it himself...seemed like the hotel was understaffed. Lots of simple things took awhile like getting silverware at breakfast, getting tables bussed, ETC. Didn't want to wait on maintenance to come to fix it. We even got the bonus of killing a roach one day when we came back to the room from the beach. We weren't all that upset about it: It's a warm, tropical climate & to be expected.

The best part of the hotel was the beach and the grounds. The resort itself was beautiful... flowering trees, exotic plants...just gorgeous. And the beach is the main reason why you go to Punta Cana...palm lined, clear blue water...the stretch in front of Arena Blanca didn't disappoint. Plenty of beach chairs although if you wanted a covered hut, you had to be up to reserve one before 7am...even though there were signs everywhere saying no towel reservations were allowed. We managed to snag one on the last day.

I think the thing we were most disappointed in was the food. When we stayed at Occidental, they had some kind of Dominican fare every night on the buffet and it was always delicious. I prefer to eat like the locals...they always make their own food best of all. I was so upset to see not a single Dominican dish anywhere the entire stay. When we inquired, we were told "Dominican Night is Thursday"...the day we left. So we were left to soggy, cold eggs, burnt bacon (only 1 morning), hockey puck hamburgers, hard as a brick chicken, chewy steak, and flavored vinegar as salad dressing. We missed out on the a la cart restaurants as my husband didn't pack long pants (We're in the tropics!) and was not allowed entry. The best things we ate were the churros at breakfast, french fries at lunch, and the flan & vanilla ice cream desserts at dinner. Also the sales staff at the Cayena Beach next door waited for you outside the buffet restaurant every day and were very persistent...to the point of following you even when you tried to politely decline their sales pitch. At one point I had to yell at the man that we were trying to enjoy our vacation and wanted to spend as much time on the beach as possible...not in his time share pitch. Rudeness seemed to work as they avoided us for the rest of the trip, barely even saying hello.

Overall, we were disappointed but made the best of our stay. The days at the beach were wonderful...until we had to eat something. Spoke to some people staying next door at Ocean Blue who loved their resort...spend a little more and stay there. We will be going elsewhere for our next vacation...Punta Cana isn't a quiet little beach town anymore.

Room Tip: Avoid Building 1

Last Fall, my adult son and I together with 2 other friends spent an 8 day vacation at this (allegedly) Spanish owned and managed property. On arrival, our room was not available, nor was it going to be according to the front desk until the next day. After dinner, feeling a little concerned about the clear lack of concern by management, I presented myself at the desk. I was met with belligerence, then told to speak to the concierge.

The otherwise bizarre behavior was then explained to me. There was a shakeup in management in anticipation of the impending sale of the resort. $20 in the left hand made it possible to have a key in my left!

The rest of the week was cat and mouse game of deny service, be firm (if not confrontational) then the eventual retreat of demands. The best was the pizza chef who gave me a list of colognes he expected to receive before I left. To be sure, it was comical and he had printed up many copies, indicating that I had not been singled out.

When the representative of the tour company WestJet Tours, was contacted, her curt response was that she was not paid to resolve conflicts and had been too busy to greet us when we first arrived.

The rest of the trip was wonderful, albeit because we came to not expect anything from the hotel. Even housekeeping was erratic, sometimes forgetting to clean our room, although they did remove the garbage and pick up the tip.

I surmise that in the total absence of true management, the employee free for all was unchecked. Hopefully they will install a manager with a firm hand and a sense of customer service.

Advice to the wise: Be firm and stand your ground, you will eventually receive proper treatment.

Room Tip: sea view, its quieter at night

Like everyone else I had read the gamut of reviews on this resort. It did take us about 25 minutes to actually get shown to our room after checking in and our electronic door keys did not work. The Bellboy took them back to the front desk and returned with a regular key that we kept for the remainder of the trip and had no further difficulties. We stayed in
Building 4 in a 'deluxe' garden room which was fine... good location. Beach was gorgeous. Resort grounds were immaculate. Staff was very friendly. International atmosphere. We were from the US and ran into very few other Americans, which we liked!

Maid service was excellent. Food was OK, which is what we expected after reading other reviews. Always found something to eat... not much variety day to day is all. The wine served at the buffet/resort etc... was not good. We stuck to El Presidente, the national beer and took our own large glasses. did not try any mixed drinks, but I saw a lot being poured.

Vendors were a little annoying. A little Spanish and a good attitude was all it took to alleviate their persistance.. This was a family vacation...2 adults and 2 girls ages 11 and 13... A good time was had by all...
