“Great vacation”
Reviewed 8 May 2012

Having just returned last week from a 13 day vacation I have to say that the trip was wonderful. We travel multiple times a year and have stayed and various resorts in both Mexico and the Dominican. We were fortunate enough to stay within the Excellence Club and were greeted with champagne upon arrival and then escorted to a private club area for check-in the staff were eager to help us with all our requests. We were able to enjoy the many wonderful club upgrades (i.e. multiple premium liquor bottles - which could be exchanged for a different preference, reserved seating in various restaurants, and the best -- cabanas and wonderful staff on our sectioned beach area). From champagne always flowing, to 11:30am fruit kabobs delivered to us on the beach to sandwiches and pizza brought out regularly. The staff (Ines, Raphael ) on the club beach area were amazing and greeted us in the morning with our fresh towels/water and help set up our chairs and cabana. No need to reserve for restaurants and food was wonderful, so much to pick from. The workout facilities were great and full of fresh towels and water options. No complaints about our room we experienced non of the issues others complained about. Trust the majority of us! Great resort!

First trip to the Dominican Republic and after months of research we decided on Excellence Punta Cana for our 30th anniversary. Flights and clearing customs/immigration was smooth, 20 minutes after landing we were sitting in our transfer van. EPC is a long ride from the airport but if they fix some of the seemingly hundreds of potholes, the trip would be much shorter. Champagne and a fresh towel greeting at the resort, a very friendly check-in and when we got to our room, a banner celebrating our anniversary on the door along with a bottle of champagne and a fruit platter to greet us along with a note notifying us that they would serve us a special "champagne breakfast" on our anniversary. An extremely pleasant welcoming to say the least. The staff makes you feel very welcome, they want to see their guests enjoying themselves and are quick with a smile. Food was fine, nothing "wowed" us but there are plenty of options and we certainly didn't go hungry. If I had to compare, the food options were more "extravagant" at our trips to Sandals resorts and the RIU Palace in Aruba(ie: LOTS more desserts and pastries at the other resorts along with entrees) but again you had plenty of choices. On that note, the Sandals properties are more luxurious looking with all the tile/marble everywhere, EPC seems more tropical with a fair amount of "glamour", just not as glamourous, in our opinion(although some others mentioned the Sandals properties reminded them of museums and they liked EPC better.) A big plus for EPC is there is no problems with finding chairs to relax at, we would spend part of the day on the beach and then go to the pools and there were always loungers available. A negative though is the lack of floats, for a resort this size it seemed like they have about a dozen floating mats for their guests and we heard several complaints about this. Pool service was very good, before you finished a drink someone was asking if you wanted another, hard to burn up calories laying in the loungers(ha ha). The evening entertainment was BY FAR the BEST we've seen at any resort we've been to, the dancers are unbelievably talented and we enjoyed watching the shows immensely. Unfortunately the weather wasn't cooperative as we only had 2 completely sunny days out of 8, most days were cloudy and warm with frequent rain, in fact both beach party nights and at least 2 weddings were forced inside after setting up for their ceremonies. Nothing to fault the resort for just an unfortunate weather week for us. Bottom line for us is the staff seems to really WANT to please their guests, while service is slow at times for dinner(10-15 minutes between courses) other restaurants were very prompt. Drinks were flowing freely and didn't seem watered down and were very good. Even upper management staff were cordial and willing to talk to you about any concerns or if you wanted to say something you appreciated. Resort was nice looking, the staff seemed to always be cleaning or sprucing up the grounds, the grounds/pools are attended to daily. We enjoyed our trip, the weather was the only real disappointment. Would we return? Since we saved more than a $1000 on a Sandals Whitehouse 7 day trip(we went for 8 days) and the flights worked very well, there is a value that we couldn't overlook. Even the Riu Palace in Aruba was almost $1000 more. The long trip to the resort and the long bus ride back for any excursions(at least an hour ride each way) would make us look at other resorts but we certainly would go back if the price was right. Nothing about the resort's staff, service, grounds, beach, food would deter us from a return trip, we enjoyed the trip very much and would certainly recommend staying here. We stayed in room 4211 above the Cascade pool.

I read a lot of these reviews prior to arriving at The Excellence and they made me a little worried. After spending 8 days there recently, I don’t know how anyone could complain. The complaints that you read in these reviews must be from the type of people that feel the need to find reasons to complain. Sure, not everything is perfect but what in this world is? I typically do not write reviews but felt compelled to after getting back because of this.

I’ll start by saying that the staff really makes this place great. When we arrived we were greeted by Eduard who took our bags. We would see him a few more times over our stay and he would always ask how we were and if we needed anything. Juan Carlos and Willy took care of entertainment and were awesome. Each time we would see them they would make sure that we were doing ok and ask if we wanted to join them in a game, dancing etc. Gabriel was a waiter at the beach area and a bartender at the outside hut and was hilarious. This guy is really great at what he does and although he is super busy, he always stopped to say hi. Each of these guys got to know us by name and really made us feel at home. These guys work really hard to keep you happy so tip them. It’s not required and it is part of your all inclusive stay but its common courtesy. I do not mean to leave anyone out as we had a great experience with all of the staff but these guys stuck out the most. We even made it a point to find and say bye to each one of them on our last day. Great group of people! I can’t say enough about them.

The food is good, some restaurants better than others. It’s all inclusive, if you don’t like one go to another one. We usually got there between 6 and 7 and never had to wait to be seated. Once we got to a restaurant at 8 and had a 30 minute wait. Room service usually took about 30-45 minutes to arrive which is typical and is actually impressive when taking into consideration the size of the resort and the amount of people there. When it rained, room service took about an hour to an hour and a half depending on time of day but this is to be expected, everyone is in their room. Regarding the rain…. It rained once all day. Each other time it rained it was gone in about 20 minutes and the sun came back out.

The only downfall I can even think of is the location. It’s about an hour from the airport but we were fine with that. We got to see the Dominican Republic while riding. The roads have a lot of pot holes but nothing to complain about. Excursions are about an hour away as well. We went on one and didn’t want to leave the resort again. There are shows every night at the theater and Juan Carlos and Willy keep the entertainment rolling during the day. The beach does tend to be a little rough but if you walk out of the resort and take a right at the beach, about 100 yards up the water breaks further out and is crystal clear. It’s beautiful. If you want to go on an excursion from the resort then find Diego out on the beach and book horseback riding or dune buggies. He is another guy that we got to know really well and is extremely nice.

One complaint that I read that really freaked me out was that someone had money stolen from their safe. In my opinion it’s either a rep from another resort that posted it or the dummy left their safe open. No matter where in the world you are, if you leave your safe open someone is going to go in it. Punch your code in, give it a final tug to make sure it latched and you are good.
Oh, if you walk out on the beach and take a left you can get a 70 minute massage at Nancy’s for $50 or $90 for a couples massage. We did that and it was really great. They did massage my butt which was strange but it felt nice lol

We had a great time and I can’t say anything bad about The Excellence. We will definitely be back. I hope that I am able to expel any reservations you may have from reading other reviews. Take it in stride and formulate your own opinion when you get there. If you see Gabriel, Willy, Juan Carlos, Diego, Eduard, or even "Barrack Moya" (you'll know when you see him) lol please tell them that Jeremiah and Marci say hi. Cant wait to go back! Sorry to be so long winded.

Room Tip: The 3rd floor has vaulted ceilings but the first floor may have a swim up room. We had a 3rd floor r...

First and foremost, I love staying at this resort. As long as everything goes according to plan to get there, you'll have a great time. Hit the slightest snag before your trip, and the resort is not as Excellent as they describe. We planned what would have been our fourth stay at the Excellence, but Jetblue cancelled our flight home. However, they were willing to change our flights for free. I tried to e-mail reservations at the Excellence to alert them to our problem, to no response...at all. I ended up calling their reservation number and got transferred three times until someone was able to assist me. We just needed to move our trip by four days, for the same number of nights, same room, and the resort had the availability. The Excellence would not make the change. They were willing to cancel our reservation for free and rebook us at the current rates which was $250 more. Seriously? On top of it all, we paid for the Excellence Club which was supposed to offer superior service. We're very disappointed with the resort, as these things happen when you travel and they had the room available. We're still going to Punta Cana but are staying at a different resort.

We were recently at Excellence Punta Cana and it was our 5th visit. On arrival at the hotel, we were warmly greeted with smiles, champagne and a “welcome home” greeting from the staff. Our check in by Ibhar was swift and within minutes we were escorted to our room in building 7 of the Excellence Club. We found the service throughout the resort exemplary starting from the waiters extending to the management. Any request we had was fulfilled with a smile. Staff including Ines, Antonio and Rafael at the Excellence Club beach area were exceptional and made sure all our needs were met promptly. Food at all the restaurants was delicious but our favourite were Chez Isabelle, Grill and Lobster House. We were disappointed that the beepers for table waiting at the restaurants were not working. On most nights the entertainment was mediocre except for the “Michael Jackson Show” and “Back in Time” which are great. Among the entertainment coordinators we found Yohanna, an excellent dancer, very friendly and keen to include us in various games, and she gave us some lessons in Bachata, Salsa and Merengue. As for the other Entertainment coordinators such as Juan Carlos and Willy, we found them very unfriendly and non-participants. The hotel grounds and beach area was immaculate; there are various sports facilities for those who feel active. The pools are clean and beds (cabanas) are plenty. Overall we were happy and would return in a heartbeat. However, a few disappointments such as; the 2 Jacuzzis at the pool area were not working and when they did the water wasn’t warm enough; the nightclub Allegria did honour requests from some guests but the toilets were unclean and ceiling lights were not working during our entire stay.
