We traveled to this resort for our honeymoon when it was still NH Royal Beach. We loved the property because it was smaller than some of the other resorts in the DR. It was great to be able to go to the sister side, NH Real Arena, which we had full access too (they do not have access to the Royal resort). All rooms, but the few ocean front rooms are exactly the same. You just have to pick ocean view, poolside, or garden view. Oceanview means that you have a view of the ocean it does not mean you are close to the water. Poolside rooms are very nice, you will have lounge chairs just off your porch and then the pool is literally 5 ft away. You will not have much privacy during the day. However, the pool closes at nightfall and then you have a secluded room until the next morning. Gardenview rooms, if you are on the first floor, you will also have your own lounge chairs, but not as much privacy. We were on the second floor, had a nice view of the property/pool and more privacy on the balcony. The rooms were modern, with a sofa and chair area as a living room, flat screen TV, hot tub and chairs on the lanai, and a walk out shower and two sink bowls.
The lobby and rooms were not as grand, opulent, etc as some other resorts in the DR, it seemed. However, the staff was much friendlier. NH was going for the more modern, clean look and the rooms were nothing to snub your nose at. I choose a friendly staff any day. The staff is amazing, super friendly, responsive and have fun! We loved everyone that we encountered throughout the week. We were greeted dozens of times per day by waiters, bartenders, gardeners and even the guards; all were very personable and accommodating.
We had no problem when checking in and they greeted us with a delicious alcoholic beverage. Prior to traveling, my husband called ahead to get us an upgrade since we were honeymooners. They moved us to pool, almost ocean view, were greeted with a honeymoon banner on the door and fruit/wine basket!
This property is gorgeous. It is very well manicured, contemporary clean feeling. The pool was beautiful and had a awesome lazy river through half of it. The beach was beautiful, white sands with lots of tall, gorgeous palm trees. There is a large portion of beach only for the "adults only" side with lots of lounge chairs and some with "tiki" type huts. The first couple days we didn't make it down early enough to get a "tiki" hut so we made do with the shade of the palms. The next few days, my husband put towels on the "tiki" hut chairs at the crack of dawn. Well worth the early rise! There was seaweed along water's edge, but it was cleaned / bagged at least 3 times a day. There were some salesman walking along the water's edge and if you kindly tell them "no" they will leave you be. The security guards keep close tabs on the salesman also.
If debating between the two properties, the added expense for Royal is worth it to me. There is less wait at the bars as well as wait staff poolside and at the lobby bar, unlike the other side. They also have additional activities like yoga & aerobics every morning, classes in the afternoon (all about cigars, carving fruit, etc). There is a beach BBQ each day which is delicious!
The food was pretty good. There were plenty of restaurants open for dinner service, buffets serving 3 meals a day, 24/7 room service and snacks. We had reservations for dinner every night, which the resort did for us ahead of time. We ate at Pure (Royal) which was a 6 course, international cuisine. 3 courses were excellent, 3 completely missed the mark. The hibachi style restaurant was delicious and entertaining! We also tried the Italian and Mexican restaurants and both were very good. We absolutely loved the Mexican restaurant, which turned out to be more American! The alcoholic drinks were good and so was the cappuccino at the lobby area.
We did 2 excursions. One was a speed boat/snorkeling/natural pool tour right off the coast. We had a great time driving the little boats and saw some pretty cool fish. Second one was the zip line tour, which is an all day event. We left at 9 and got back around 3. It took a while to pick up other resort guests, go across the country side to get to the mountains and back. Completely well worth it though. It was the best thing we did and highly recommend it!
Overall, this resort was beautiful, friendly, safe and would recommend anyone to come here and spend their vacation.
