Beautiful place to visit!

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 2 Jul 2011
We stayed at Secrets Royal Beach in June 2011 to celebrate my 40th birthday and our parent's anniversary. The destination was a suggestion by an Apple Vacations travel agent, since we were unsure where to go on vacation. After we booked, I went online to look at the reviews and had noticed that the resort was rated highly by past guests. It made me feel much more comfortable about our upcoming trip.

When we arrived, we were greeted by a lobby assistant and were handed a cold towel and glass of champagne, We arrived around 1pm local time and were very tired from a red eye flight we had taken. We were told that our rooms were not available at the time we arrived, and that we would have to wait until 3pm. We were also told that the room types we requested (two rooms with a king bed), were not available, but that we could be booked into one king and one double and then come back the next day to move rooms. We decided to just stay in the double room instead, since moving would mean we would be on the opposite side from our parents and take up time we would rather not have to waste. After check-in, we decided to go to the buffet and get a bite to eat. Little did we know that our room would not be ready until 5pm. It was a little upsetting since we were very tired, but all in all, we were on vacation, so we disregarded it in the end.

We booked a swim-up room, which I HIGHLY recommend. The rooms are on ground level and are a great experience! The only draw back to the swim-up room would be the mud outside from the porch. I think the grass has been removed from the area where the lounges are due to dragging them back and forth. There should be a rug or mat on the patio in order to not trail the mud through the room like we had several times. The towels were very dirty because of this. The rooms were decorated very nicely and had a separate couch and chair with a coffee table. There was an in-room fridge stocked with beer (Presidente only), bottled water and assorted sodas as well as a bag of banana chips. Nice touch! We were also greeted with a complimentary bottle of champagne & fruit on arrival (for the birthday/anniversary). Nice touches! No complaints about the rooms!

The resort had a "lazy river" around it (although it doesn't completely connect), as well as a swim-up bar. The area was always lively and the bartenders were very friendly & made drinks very well. We were in the pool most of our trip since it was so relaxing. If you try one thing when going to the DR, it's the "Mamajuana". I had heard several different reviews of it online before we went & it wasn't as bad as I imagined! We even bought a few bottles home for our friends. Think of it as the USA's "Jagermeister", only Mamajuana tastes NOTHING like that.

The beaches were pristine! The resort has several palapas on the beach for guests to sit under while on the beach. Several of them were occupied, but there were still some available when we went. The water there is exactly as you see in photos...very surreal! We only visited the beach twice during the week, but it was beautiful and kept very clean. There is the Marlin bar on the beach there to get drinks. I think someone had said there were waiters as well, but I didnt see any. We used the complimentary kayaks provided by the resort. That was a great experience and I recommend it! Beware of the peddlers on the beach that try to lure you to their "flea markets", about 20 minutes walk. We had purchased some items there and noticed that unless you are very strict in what you want to bargain or pay, everything you get in the store at the resort is better quality and cheaper than at these "flea markets". We weren't impressed and the people working in them are very aggressive.

The food was different, to say the least. I wasn't a fan of most items in the buffet, but not because it tasted bad...just that I wasn't used to the type of spices and way of cooking in the DR. I had heard this before I went, but realized that they have a completely different way of cooking, so it made more sense. If you are one who is used to a complex palette or eating foods from different countries, then you'll probably enjoy the tastes. Everything from meat to cheese and fruit was different. I do highly recommend any restaurants at the resort, however I do caution to either arrive early when they open, or late before they stop seating, as we waited for long periods before being seated and served during normal dinner times (7-9pm). They have a beachside grill that is to die for! All of the food at the grill was absolutely wonderful! We went each day to eat there. We also decided to try the Lobster Dinner on the beach one night. It was an additional charge of $40 per person to do this. I definitely wouldn't say it was worth an additional $40. The dinner was actually a buffet of lobster that was a little overcooked (rubbery). It was nice to eat on the beach, but other than that, I wouldn't recommend it since there is a seafood restaurant on the premises.

The grounds were kept very well. Nothing was out of place or dirty. The resort is definitely kept to VERY HIGH standards for upkeep and maintenance. I know that the resort has a new name/company that owns it (since March 2011 I believe), so I know that they are constantly changing and upgrading some things. We had noticed that there were several rooms around us that were being worked on. I have absolutely no complaints about the grounds; they are beautiful! The resort is also very quiet at night since this is "adults only". If you want night life and that kind of atmosphere, you are welcomed to go over to the adjacent property (they're connected actually, you would never know it was two resorts, other than being told). The NOW resort has several restaurants and a night club, the gym, spa and a casino. There is also a business center with computers and is also where you have to go if you want to purchase WiFi. I had purchased the WiFi, since using data on my smartphone would consist of a very large phone bill. I paid $25 for 25 hours (I figured I wouldn't be using it that much). The service was intermittent and slow, to be honest, but it was better than not having access. You would think at a five star resort that it would be complimentary. Maybe in the future...

The only thing I might have a complaint about is the "tipping" issue that we seemed to witness. Apparently even though you are staying all inclusive and tipping is "included", it seems to be customary to tip EVERYONE. I wouldn't say that you saw a lot of it in the restaurants or bars, but anywhere else you did. I hear people say that you see a lot of it in other countries and all-inclusive resorts, however this was the first time we went all-inclusive, so maybe that was why we hadn't witnessed it before.

I highly recommend this resort to anyone looking for a nice, relaxing stay. If you're looking for more upbeat atmosphere and some nightlife, try the NOW Larimer resort next door (same company and the resorts are connected). I took some photos there of the property and was VERY impressed about their grounds as well. I even had mentioned to my husband that we stay there if we visit again.

My apologies for a long review....hope it's informative and helps anyone looking for info. You can write to me if you need additional information that I hadn't included as well.

Secrets Royal Beach was a great location for a couples getaway! The atmosphere of the resort was welcoming and the grounds was beautiful and kept very clean (no dirty socks seen). My husband and I enjoyed our swim out room and the pool was never crowded! The beach was wonderful and the water was calm. There was seaweed in the water, but it was nothing like I expected from the past reviews. The seaweed was more like stems floating in the water instead of leafy seaweed that I am use to. Nonetheless, the water was exceptionally warm and swimmable. We did not notice the A/C not working in any of the restaurants. My husband is a sweater and he did not sweat and he was not uncomfortable in long slacks. The entertainment was enjoyable there at Secrets as well as Now. If you need noise, lots of people and being in a family environment, cross over to the Now side at you have it! We ventured over and enjoyed a couple evening shows, a restaurant and shopping at the Now, but was excited about being able to go back over to Secrets where things were relaxed and calm. We chose SRB for the comfortable adult atmosphere and we got that at Secrets Royal Beach!!!

Overall our experience here was excellent. My wife and I spent 6 days at the resort, and we would definitely return. The staff was outgoing and polite. The "Vacation Club" offer that was pitched to us was a great opportunity for someone shopping for a time share, etc. If you are not looking for this sort of offer, beware of the reps. As other reviews have stated, we also found the dress code to be ridiculous. Men, make sure you bring a pair of pants and a pair of dress shoes if you want to get into the nicer restaurants, while the women wore whatever they wanted. The food is decent, but it doesn't compare with dining in the NYC/NJ area.

Room tip: The swim up rooms are convenient

We traveled to this resort for our honeymoon when it was still NH Royal Beach. We loved the property because it was smaller than some of the other resorts in the DR. It was great to be able to go to the sister side, NH Real Arena, which we had full access too (they do not have access to the Royal resort). All rooms, but the few ocean front rooms are exactly the same. You just have to pick ocean view, poolside, or garden view. Oceanview means that you have a view of the ocean it does not mean you are close to the water. Poolside rooms are very nice, you will have lounge chairs just off your porch and then the pool is literally 5 ft away. You will not have much privacy during the day. However, the pool closes at nightfall and then you have a secluded room until the next morning. Gardenview rooms, if you are on the first floor, you will also have your own lounge chairs, but not as much privacy. We were on the second floor, had a nice view of the property/pool and more privacy on the balcony. The rooms were modern, with a sofa and chair area as a living room, flat screen TV, hot tub and chairs on the lanai, and a walk out shower and two sink bowls.

The lobby and rooms were not as grand, opulent, etc as some other resorts in the DR, it seemed. However, the staff was much friendlier. NH was going for the more modern, clean look and the rooms were nothing to snub your nose at. I choose a friendly staff any day. The staff is amazing, super friendly, responsive and have fun! We loved everyone that we encountered throughout the week. We were greeted dozens of times per day by waiters, bartenders, gardeners and even the guards; all were very personable and accommodating.

We had no problem when checking in and they greeted us with a delicious alcoholic beverage. Prior to traveling, my husband called ahead to get us an upgrade since we were honeymooners. They moved us to pool, almost ocean view, were greeted with a honeymoon banner on the door and fruit/wine basket!

This property is gorgeous. It is very well manicured, contemporary clean feeling. The pool was beautiful and had a awesome lazy river through half of it. The beach was beautiful, white sands with lots of tall, gorgeous palm trees. There is a large portion of beach only for the "adults only" side with lots of lounge chairs and some with "tiki" type huts. The first couple days we didn't make it down early enough to get a "tiki" hut so we made do with the shade of the palms. The next few days, my husband put towels on the "tiki" hut chairs at the crack of dawn. Well worth the early rise! There was seaweed along water's edge, but it was cleaned / bagged at least 3 times a day. There were some salesman walking along the water's edge and if you kindly tell them "no" they will leave you be. The security guards keep close tabs on the salesman also.

If debating between the two properties, the added expense for Royal is worth it to me. There is less wait at the bars as well as wait staff poolside and at the lobby bar, unlike the other side. They also have additional activities like yoga & aerobics every morning, classes in the afternoon (all about cigars, carving fruit, etc). There is a beach BBQ each day which is delicious!

The food was pretty good. There were plenty of restaurants open for dinner service, buffets serving 3 meals a day, 24/7 room service and snacks. We had reservations for dinner every night, which the resort did for us ahead of time. We ate at Pure (Royal) which was a 6 course, international cuisine. 3 courses were excellent, 3 completely missed the mark. The hibachi style restaurant was delicious and entertaining! We also tried the Italian and Mexican restaurants and both were very good. We absolutely loved the Mexican restaurant, which turned out to be more American! The alcoholic drinks were good and so was the cappuccino at the lobby area.

We did 2 excursions. One was a speed boat/snorkeling/natural pool tour right off the coast. We had a great time driving the little boats and saw some pretty cool fish. Second one was the zip line tour, which is an all day event. We left at 9 and got back around 3. It took a while to pick up other resort guests, go across the country side to get to the mountains and back. Completely well worth it though. It was the best thing we did and highly recommend it!

Overall, this resort was beautiful, friendly, safe and would recommend anyone to come here and spend their vacation.

I am on the fence how I feel about this hotel. My first experience is a very friendly bellhop and welcome champagne. The desk clerk was very friendly. However, check in was 3:00 pm and my room was not ready until 5:00 pm. Every time I would ask, they kept saying 20 minutes...

My room was clean and nice. I had a swim up room. The rooms have a couch and chair and plenty of room. The mini bar was always stocked and it was a great air conditioning system. However, the turn down service and towels were inconsistent.

The buffet on the secrets side had a great selection of food for breakfast and lunch. I never had dinner there. The BBQ grill for snacks had the best burgers! The hostesses were not too friendly but the wait staff were very attentive and friendly. The restaurants on the Larimar side were very good, however, we went to their Hibachi type chinese restaurant and got a very low key chef. Whereas the other two tables had great chefs that were very entertaining and personable.

I noticed personally that the men were very friendly to me and all spoke English well enough for me to understand and communicate.

The bar staff was very quick and nice. My first day there, they were serving drinks in coconuts. However, the rest of my stay there, they never had them again due to not receiving the delivery. When we told the bartender that I wanted a drink in a coconut, even though they were out, the bar staff made a special drink for me and served it in a pineapple so I would be satisfied.

On the Larimar side the casino was small but fun. For kinds they had the bowling alley and pool tables, but I did not see any video game room. For the size of the resort, I believe they should have more bowling lanes and a bigger game room. They did however, have board games, books, and other items available at the pool for kids. They snack bar on the Larimar side had great snacks all day long.

They did have a dance club also at night and had karoke and different night time shows on the Larimar side, as well as live music every night on the adult side. The bars had a great variety of drinks.

The staff drove us to the ATM at the front of the long drive to the resort which was nice. There also was ample security and sales people were not allowed to approach us on the resort beach. However, they were quite persistent once you left the grounds.

The two excursions we took were good and well organized. The resort also had a great gym, as well as staff that ran a workout class on the beach. I did not visit the spa, but they did have a 2 story cabana that you could get a massage.

Overall, I think they can improve the experience and put a little more TLC into the rooms. I believe they should also add some more activities during the day to keep people entertained.

This adult only resort was a great get away. Security guards surrounding the premises keep guests feeling safe. Food at the resort was good although there are only 3 restaurants. We were able to eat at the sister restaurants-service and food there was not as good.

Entertainment at night was lacking, so bring your iPod speakers and make your own party on the beach.

Massage on the beach was great.
