“Our first holiday abroad, amazing!”
Reviewed 19 July 2012

My girlfriend and i visited the domincan for our first holiday away abroad. We chose the Gran bahia Principe esmeralda. It was certainly worth every penny we paid. What a great holiday and amazing hotel. Apon arrival we where taken from the Punta cana reception to the esmeralda lobby. The hotel is one of about 6 on the resort. we where checked in and then shown to our room, given important info on the room, resort and everything we needed to know. The room was spacious, clean and quite simply amazing. We had a mini bar and safe in room which was included as part of our all inclusive. the mini bar was restocked each day when cleaning the rooms. our room also had quite a spacious balcony with a table and chairs perfect for reading our book in the morning. There was a buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner and snack bars available for the times inbetween. The snack bar was open air so no air con, so if you want to escape the heat you should wait for the lunch buffet to open at 1 as this was inside next to the lobby, with air con and waiters serving drinks. The greatest thing was that the Water served in the resturants is from a purified source so its safe to drink. Also they use purified water to make ice so thats safe to have in your drinks also. The buffets where clean with a large selection of foods and there was also a chef cooking up food on a hot plate. The esmeralda is a two minute walk from the rooms to the beach. the waters and clear and warm and it really is paradise. clear blue sea and clear white sands. At the momemnt they are in the process of enlarging the complex so ask for block 90 or 91 as its furthest away from the building renovations so quieter. The pool was large and has many beds, if you want a lounger undercover get down early to grab one. the pool itself is quite warm, but with the heat they have thats to be expected, its bareable and not as hot as some reviews have made it out to be. we never found it uncomfortable, if you do you can take the 30 second walk to beach and find slightly cooler water. it about a 25 minute bus ride from the airport. Its handy to take dollars for tips, always keeps some ones and fives available for tipping. In terms of money, all items on resort are priced in dollars due to the large amount of americans holidaying in the dominican. all of the excursions are priced in dollars. its much easier to pay in dollars but you can take pesos as they convert it for you at the till. We took dollars for the hotel, tips and excursions and some pesos for the small market stalls and "lookie lookie" men as you get a better rate with pesos here. overall our experience of the hotel was amazing, super relaxing and the perfect get away. We'll visit punta cana again some day and we'll stay here again.if you have any questions feel free to ask, weve been home two days now and were missing it lol. give the ron barcelo rum a try, we got such a taste for it, we brought some home. happy holidaying.

Room Tip: blocks 90 and 91 are furthest away from the new block developement (block 94). they start early in t...

We stayed at this resort in October 2011, I just haven't gotten around to writing a review. This was our first time to Punta Cana and it was definitely worth the trip.
The grounds are very large and beautifully kept. We enjoyed walking throughout the grounds but there is also a trolley that you can take if you are in a hurry or don't like walking. The trolley appeared to run fairly often.
There are many swimming pools around that you can access. When staying at the Esmerelda, we had access to most of the resort. We also had a private section on the beach with plenty of chairs which was nice. We stayed at the esmerelda side of the resort for quiet beach/pool time, but if you are looking for a party I would suggest heading to the main pools. The pool was very warm and nice for a relaxing swim after a day at the beach.
The Esmerelda appeared to be nicer than other sections in the resort, and appeared comparable to the Ambar section. We had our choice of any restaurants to go to and enjoyed this option. I did like the buffet, but often headed to the Bavaro section's buffet for more selection. The esmerelda is a bit more family focused, but my understanding is that the Ambar section is adults only.
We did an excursion which included swimming with sting rays and nurse sharks, and snorkeling. It was an exciting adventure but there was very little space to sit (I normally wouldn't have minded but I became sea sick and it was a challenge when people rushed to take all seats).
My only complaint was that they seemed to use very strong smelling cleaning chemicals which gave me a headache upon arrival. We tried to switch rooms but this seemed to be a smell in all rooms, and the concierge was not very helpful, advising that they would have someone follow up with us the following day (but no one did). There were also numerous ants in the room, which may have been because we were on the ground floor. I went on a rampage every night trying to get the ants away from the wall, and moved our bed away from the wall so they would not climb up. If this had not been an issue, it would have been a more pleasant stay for me.
Overall a great and relaxing vacation

Dear client,

Receive cordial greetings from all the team working at Gran Bahia Principe Bavaro Resort, especially from our Quality & Customer Service Department.

First of all, we would like to thank you for bringing to our attention your comments about your last stay in our Hotel. It is through communications of this nature that our customers give us an opportunity to assess and evaluate our performance, as well as to ensure that we maintain and deliver the level of service expected from us.

We regret to hear that your perception about the cleanliness of our rooms was not positive but be assured that your comments has been already brought to the General Manager of our Resort.

We would like to state that our hotel is a safe and disease free complex; since we follow a very strict hygiene program and constant monitoring of all standards of quality in our Hotel.

However, due to the situation of the villas, the tropical climate and the lush vegetation surrounding our villas, it may still rarely occur that an insect is found in a room.

We are glad to find out that there were some aspects from our services you find worth to mention. This is what definitely strengthens our philosophy of seeking the highest level of service excellence and give us the motivation to work every day as a devoted and committed team.

We would like to have the opportunity to welcome you once again at The Gran Bahia Principe Bavaro Resort to experience the hospitality of our people, the quality of our services and facilities and change any misperception you may have about us.

Best regards

Reviewed 18 July 2012

Both me and my girlfriend did a lot of research into this particular holiday, and read alot of reviews of a few different hotels. We've pretty much read all of the reviews for this particular hotel both good and bad and ended up choosing the esmeralda and went with an open mind. Happily we were both abolsutely AMAZED with every aspect of our holiday.

Me and my girlfriend travelled here from june 21st to july 6th with thomas cook, flights etc where fine, plane actually landed early :-).

On arriving at the resort we were dropped off at the Gran Bahia Principe Punta Cana lobby, and a shuttle bus collected us and our luggage and took us to the esmerelda lobby to be checked in and greeted with our welcome drinks and welcome package including any reservations for restaurants if you made any. We suggest emailing in advance and make sure you get a reply that these have been confrimed as we emailed but were never sent a confirmation email and our reservations had not been placed. If they are not placed it is still, however, very easy to go to guest services at any point during the day and make reservations for any of the a la carte's, which we did and to be honest we preferred as we were able to check the menu's for the restaurants so we knew there was food we liked (both very fussy eaters).

The Room: The rooms are all identical, they are extremely spacious, loads of room for just two of us, huge four poster bed, finished to an extremely high standard, two sinks, shower, toilet, jacuzzi bath, lots of lovely extras that make you feel welcome like slippers and robes and umbrellas etc. The rooms were absolutely spotless and maticulously maintained by the maids. Plenty of towels that were changed twice a day, morning and night, the night made even leaves you good night chocolates which was a lovely touch, fresh bedding every day, the minibar was nicely stocked and replenished daily, if you leave a note the maids will do there best to put in what you request. We put in a note with a little 'appreciation' and were rewarded with exactly what we asked for and some beautiful towel and rose petal decorations in our room. These women work extremely hard and ridiculously long hours, please do show them some 'appreciation' and they will be extremely grateful to you.

There are five apartment blocks, 90-94, 90 being closest to the beach, 93 and 94 are opposite each other and furthest back. You may have noticed in a few reviews that there is contruction work going on which there still is, we were in block 91, and for us personally it did not bother us one bit, if you are the type of person that will allow it to annoy you then yes it will, for us, not an issue, it becomes a distant rumble in the background after a short while, i can imagine if we were put in blocks 93 or especially 94 we wouldn't of been happy though so request 90-92. We did send an email two weeks in advance after reading reviews and requested a room in block 90 on either the first or second floors, again unfortunately they were unable to grant this request and on arrival we were placed in block 92, first floor on the service road side (which is no where near as bad as some people have complained about and made it appear), which didnt bother us at all to be honest, we still had a relatively nice view and a view was certainly not going to ruin our holiday. We did however enquire if there was any chance to be moved to a pool side view, this was by no means at all a complaint, this was simply a 'if you dont ask, you dont get' so we thought why not try, the reception staff were extremely helpful and did everything in their power for us, they were brillaint, and after 3 days we were lucky enough to get a pool view room in block 91 on the first floor which also had the added benefit of being able to use the lobby's free wifi, excellent - no expensive calls home!! There is room service available should you require it, your own personal butler service - which we will mention a little later, anything you could ask for was not a problem.

The Pool: The esmerelda pool is very large, plenty of room, has a swim up bar (which ive never had and was excellent :-D). You do have to get up early to get beds with a bit of shade, ie a parasol otherwise they will be pretty much gone by 9. The pool bar has lovely cocktails on tap with ice, and there is also a snack bar which is a basically just the same as the hotel restaurant, a buffet service, but more dress down. The pool itself is one of our minor criticisms, it can get warm in there, not to the point of uncomfort, but a pool is there to cool you down and be quite refreshing in my opinion, give you a break from the heat, and after around 11 in the morning it is basically a warm bath which may disappoint some people, not a huge issue but i felt worth mentioning. Be careful of the swim up bar surface aswell, its black marble which gets scolding hot!! A poor design choice really.

The Beach: The beach is beautiful, white sands, aqua seas, palm trees...lovely! It is never full as the esmerelda has its own private part that the rest of the resort cant use, plenty of beds, again however, you must claim beds with parasols early should you want one. It is very clean, there are hotel staff walking down it all day long keeping it clean, emptying bins etc, there can be a few spines and spikey acorn looking things that fall off the palm trees during a windy day but these dissappear after a day or so, theres nothing can be done about this. The sea can be quite choppy on some days as this area is where the caribbean and the atlantic ocean meets, there is a cordonned off area where you are allowed to swim which can get a bit congested at times and can end up in a sea of bobbing heads, quite amusing to watch really :-). There are free water sports available such as canoes and catamarans, anything with an engine is not free, we did the parasailing which was brill! If you fancy a walk along the beach head out and turn right down the beach to the huts that you can see in the distance, these are all stalls where you can buy liquor, mainly rum, cigars, paintings and trinkets, you can also take a stroll up carribean street which is in between the Riu maco and Riu Naiobi, follow the path at the back of the beach in front of the Riu hotels, you cant miss it.

The Food: The esmerelda has the jasmine buffet as its restaurant which you can use for breakfast lunch and dinner is you so wish, apart from thursday nights when it becomes a seafood a la carte for the night and you need to make a reservation. it also has the Bella italia a la carte. The food in the jasmine is lovely, both me and my girlfriend are fussy eaters and neither us were struggling for choice. The chef makes regular appearances to make sure his food is being enjoyed, remains fresh and none runs out. Being a guest at the esmerelda means you can eat from all of the buffets at your choice apart from the adults only ambar buffet. Being a guest also means you can make as many reservations to any of the a la carte's as much as you want, other guests of the resort are restricted to so many a week depending on their chosen hotel. We ate at the Santa Fe tex mex restaurant which was ok, the Don pablo which was lovely and the garden grill which we thoroughly enjoyed.

The nightlife: The nightlife mainly consists of shows at the theatre which is located deep in the resort in between the Punta Cana and Bavaro lobbies. The shows are good and the staff work exceptionally hard, the best nights were the michael jackson show and circus show which people have already mentioned. There are also shows in the pueblo principe town area which is an open stage with stalls at the back, shops all round and the nightclub, sports bar, and casino are located. These shows are more crowd involving and are fun to watch. Our biggest gripe with the whole holiday is within this area though. The stall sellers can be overly hassling to get you to buy things. I've been to spain and turkey in the past and so are used to this type of thing and the old 'lucky lucky' men and can be very tolerant of them. The chaps here however, can be very testing, if they just realised leaving people to have a look around without hassle would probably lead to more sales where-as they scare people off and make people not want to bother with the hassle. Other than that this is a lovely area to chill out in the open area and have a bit of fun watching the shows.

The Staff: Our main delight with this holiday was all down to the staff. The domincian people are an extremely friendly nation, and the staff here are the most friendliest most helpful people ive ever came across. Nothing at all is too much trouble for them. I do not understand how people can complain about the level of service and staff friendlyness in this resort, its beyond me. Maids, Waiters, Waitresses, Bar staff, Receptionists, Gardeners, Beach Cleaners, Bell Boys, shuttle bus drivers, even the bloke they employ to put all the sand stamps in the ash trays, every one of them smiled and said hello to us, all that is required is a simple smile, and they really do appreciate even a small amount of spanish being spoke to them, these people who are complaining must walk around with a face like a slapped backside on them all day, we never had an issue all holiday, they made us feel very special and very welcome. These people work extremely hard, extremely long hours and arent the best paid, show a little 'appreciation' and they will show you it back 10 times over.

We would like to say a special thankyou to our butler - Jenny. She was incredible to us and made our holiday that extra few levels more amazing. We had Camomile/lavender/other scented pillows almost every night of our stay from her, she was always asking to make sure everything was perfect with us, and one night we returned home to a beautiful flower petal and candle trail leading into a mood set bubble bath and champagne on ice ready for us with towel decorations spread around, it was incredible.......Thankyou Jenny :-) :-). The bar staff in the esmerelda lobby bar are brilliant, Algelis in the jasmine, too may to name but all staff were brilliant.

Thanks very much for a Fantastic holiday GBP Esmerelda, we would recommend anyone wanting to visit the dominican to stay here and hopefully we will be returning next year for another fortnight in paradise.

Sara and Rob - Room 91117 :-)

Room Tip: Request blocks 90 - 91 for pool/beach view. First or second floor would be best.

We did a family trip for the 4th of July and decided o the Esmeralda. The grounds are by far the most beautiful of all the resorts. They are clean and very well kept. The service was overall good, but we did receive some attitude from some of the employees. The food was better in some restaurants than others. The best restaurant is the Dominican restaurant at the Bavaro resort. The French restaurant was also a good choice. The Japanese/hibachi can be missed. Do yourself a favor and make reservations for all the restaurants for the duration of your stay, they get booked up fast. On a side note make sure you do your research for excursions, some vendors are more expensive than other. I highly recommend the Zip Line.

Hello everyone, and thank you for reading this honest trip report about the Gran Bahia Principe Esmeralda in Punta Cana.
Cast:
Me: 47 years old male
My wife:???
Our daughter: 18 years old
Daughter’s friend: 18 years old
Date of travel: 16th to 23rd of June

Let me first say that we were at the Bahia Principe Punta Cana in January 2012 (which is a different section on the same property) so if you have question, don’t hesitate, I can compare both.

We left Montreal with Air Canada vacations early am on time, relaxing flight, nothing out of the ordinary. Landed in Punta Cana where it was hot and sunny, took our luggage, went to the Air Canada vacations kiosk and then on the bus, for an approximately 30 minutes ride. We stopped first at the Bavaro/Ambar lobby to drop some vacationers and then on to the Punta Cana lobby, where a small cart took a few of us and our luggage to the Esmeralda lobby. The first thing that struck you is that the Esmeralda is much smaller than the Punta Cana. Only 230 some rooms, (with another building on construction as we speak), compare to the 800 plus room of the Punta Cana…So the check in went smoothly, we arrived at the desk at around 14h00 and our rooms were ready. We had rooms # 91205 and 91206. I requested before leaving 2 rooms together, since I did not want the girls to be too far and also requested block 90 facing the pool. We got the rooms together but that’s it. Got block 91 facing the Punta Cana section. Was a bit disappointed but, hey, not enough to make it a big deal. A concierge took us to our room and explained all we had to know about the resort. Very nice touch. Speaking of the room, it was beautiful! Huge bed, a sofa, 2 chairs and a table near the patio door, balcony with 2 chairs and a table, a huge bathroom with a whirlpool tub, separate shower, 2 sink. Always clean, the lady did a great job every day with flowers and towel animals. (Sorry I don’t remember her name). The fridge had a lays chips, sodas, beer, dark rum, vodka. Filled every day. Be sure to call the 24 hour room service, and ask for the special pillow menu! That’s right; you can order different kind of pillow with different smell on them!!! Very nice touch.

FOOD: Absolutely delicious! At the buffet you really forget that you’re in a resort in Dominican Republic. Lots and lots of choices every night, from soup, both hot and cold to cheeses, cold cuts, salad, fish, meat, vegetables, fruits, desert, WOW. Really even my mother-in-law could not complain on the food there. (She is a very very picky eater!!!). And for all you seafood lovers, don’t miss the Thursday night seafood buffet! All you care to eat shrimps and lobster, miamm. But don’t show up to late, people tend to fill up their plate like it was their last meal…ever! And it was mention somewhere on this web site that you needed reservation, IT IS NOT THE CASE, you do not need to make a reservation.
We tried the Bella Italia Italian restaurant at the Esmeralda, which was very good. Service was excellent and the food up to any Italian restaurant I know.
Restaurant Le Gourmet at the Ambar section: to us the best restaurant on the complex. Food and service were beyond expectations. We did eat there in January, and Joseleno the maitre D was on duty again, and he and the staff surpassed themselves. Really try the restaurant, and if you’re lucky like us, the Chef might show up at your table and prepare delicious “banana flambée” like he did for us.

The pool: Huge, and much quieter than the main one at the Punta Cana section. Complete with wet bar, great service offered there also, lots of chair, and a few palapas around the pool. You need to be there by 8h00 if you want one.
There’s also the small pool section reserved for adult, with 6 or 7 cabanas which is very quiet and somewhat romantic, if you want to relax away from it all.

The beach is huge with lots of chairs always some available and palapas, that you can have available until around 10h00am. There is a small section of the beach reserved for Esmeralda guest, which is behind a little bit, but less crowded and more shaded. Also a small beach bar exclusively for the Esmeralda guests near the water sports cabanas.

General: Great service, great people, superior to the Punta Cana section and well worth the few $$ more. It was hot and humid in June, 1 ½ day that was overcast, besides that a beautiful week.

If you want more details or have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Oh and we are already planning to go back in January 2013, that’s how much we loved it.

Room Tip: Block 90 is the closest to beach
