This is the smallest of the Gran Bahia Principe group. It's tucked way in the back and has the rooms closes to the beach. The rooms are very nice and clean, the only complaint I have about the room service was that they did not clean the room early enough. We would spend all day at the beach or pool and would get back to the room at around 5 to change for the dinner reservations and room was not cleaned. The refrig in the room is small and has limited drinks. The food was the same everyday so the options never changed. Going to the specialty restaurants weren’t really worth the effort of getting dressed up after an all day at the beach. The food was alright and there was not one thing on the menu that I thought was impressive. We tried the other locations but the Bahia Principe (the huge resort in the middle) was too crowded and the food was the same as at the Esmeralda. But over all we had a great time and met some good people. The majority of the people staying at the resort were not from the US so expecting the staff to understand the English language is a little foolish but the majority of the staff spoke and understood some English. There is a shuttle that runs up and down all the resorts so you can catch one to all the resorts inside the huge resort or walk. At the front of the Gran Bahia Principe there is shopping that closes late and they have dancing, casino, and a sport bar. In addition, there are not activities at the pool area all the activities and loud music at the resort that is next door and it is walking distance. We did a couple of excursions. Make sure you stay away from the “Caribe de la Luna” night excursion. It is $95 per person, it was long and boring, the food was ok at best. It was a lot of bad acting, lots of dancing performers, loud music, and it was hot temperature wise. There is construction going on in the front but it didn't bother us we didn't hear any noise. And it was covered so we couldn't really see what was doing on.

Room Tip: Take plenty of ones for tip.

We stayed at the Esmeralda for a week in March 2012. We have been to Punta Cana many times and this was one of our favorite hotels. It is a smaller section but we enjoyed that with our 2 kids, it made things alot easier and everything we needed was within a short walk. The rooms are newer and very clean. Staff was great and very friendly unlike some other hotels in Punta Cana that we have been to.

Once again we decided to visit Gran Bahia Principe Esmeralda!! This trip was booked for my Aunt and myself at a GREAT price!!

Origianlly we booked Gran Bahia Principe Punta Cana but upgraded once we arrived. I must say the staff at Esmeralda is much better than the staff at Punta Cana!! We asked numerous times to be upgraded at the Punta Cana front desk with no assistance what so ever!! We thought being repeat customers they would appreciate our business more and be more helpful!! Unfortunately that was not the case!!

We arrived on Friday afternoon and went to our room. Our building (number 19) was the furthest building away from the beach!! We were closest to the buffet, theatre and front desk!! That being said, we are early risers and it was most difficult to get to sleep at a decent hour because of the nightly entertainment which was heard in our room everynight!! For that reason we went to the front desk Saturday morning and asked to have our rooms switched!! The famous response of the staff was "we are full" and unable to move you!! So we decided to book our a la carte reservations!! The woman was wonderful that booked our a la cartes and in fact she upgraded us to VIP since we were repeat customers!! We were happy with that but still had the issue of evening shows interupting our sleep at night.

So we walked over to the Esmeralda to catch up with some familiar faces and friends!! We met most of the staff we had seen in the past and they greeted us with open arms. We explained our situation to Ramon Diaz and of course he worked his magic!! With a quick few phone calls he had arranged to have us upgraded but we were unable to do the move until Sunday afternoon!! We were so happy, we could survive one more night of the theatre entertainment from our beds!!

A bell boy came to move us Sunday without a problem. They brought all of our luggage down to the train and transferred it to our new room!! We spent the rest of our stay poolside at the Esmeralda!!

Ramon Diaz checked with us daily along with numerous other staff to be sure our stay was as memorable as all of our past vacations!! The staff at the Esmeralda treat you like friends!! They talk to you, they hug you, they go above and beyond to be sure you are happy. They joke with you all day long and make you feel comfortable!!

The Esmeralda is undergoing quite a bit of construction right now but it did not disturb us at all!! They are building another 2 or 3 buildings full of rooms (expected to be completed in November) along with another restaurant/snack bar (expected to be completed in August) near the beach!!

We tried 3 of the a la carte restaurants during our stay. We did the Italian, the Japanese and the Steak House. All three were wonderful!! We ate at the Punta Cana Buffet along with the Esmeralda buffet and again, the food was wonderful!! You should not have complaints about the food while at this resort, in fact you should be going back home with a few extra pounds packed on!!

We have already booked our next vacation for October 2-9, 2012 but are going for a family wedding and staying at the Gran Bahia Principe Bavaro this time around!! I am hoping the service and staff at the Bavaro is better than the Punta Cana but I know it will not even be close to the service and the staff at Esmeralda!! Who knows, we may end up trying to upgrade to the Esmeralda once again once we arrive!!

If given the choice book The Esmeralda as you will not be disappointed!! Speak to Ramon Diaz, he will be sure to help make your vacation a memory to last a lifetime!! No request is too small for him and he enjoys what he does!! He loves the people and his co-workers and you can tell by the job he does!! If you see him, tell him, Kim says "hello, mi amour!!" Pay the little extra for the upgrade to the Esmeralda, it is well worth the money!!

Room Tip: We prefer block 90 (closest to the beach) or 91 with a pool view!!

This hotel was worth the money we paid and I have no reservations recommending it to anyone looking for a decent vacation spot. The grounds are really well maintained - the shuttle service frequent (would benefit from use of electric vehicles the smell of deisel was a bit much sometimes). The hotel lobby was impressive ie the use of marble etc and cleanliness. The room was as advertised on the website (could have used a little updating but it was decent) the mini bar wasn't always stocked but I found out tipping does make a difference :) there is a bit of a musty smell throughout the corridors and in the rooms but I dont think theres much to be done about that due to the climate. The beach was clean (with the exception of a few cigarette butts - seems some people think sand of any kind = ashtray) Take a ride on the banana boat it was a hoot, just hold on tight and tell the the staff running the speedboat to "GO FAST". we noticed very few vendors and none were pushy. The pool was also clean, well maintained and a pleasure to swim in. The food was plentifull but each individual has too find what suits them as not all of it will be agreeable with everyones stomach (despite taking dukarol), there is a large selection (the roast duck was excellent - surprisingly). There were some communication issues - some people have indicated that it seemed if you spoke spanish you got preferential treatment as did I at first, but then I realized that it seemed more likely those who spoke spanish were dealt with more quickly as it was easier to communicate with them making it easier to get them on their way keeping things moving. Liquor is free (obviously as its all inclusive) - tends to be the cheaper stuff, but its ok - only saw a couple of people who had obviously had too much to drink, but they were well behaved otherwise everyone seemed to be really restrained - the place was dead quiet by 9:30pm. This is the first hotel I ever stayed at where when you closed the drapes and turned out the lights it was pitch black = very restfull sleep. I must also mention the staff for the most part were friendly and helpful (as mentioned a small tip here and there does go a long way). The only real negative comment I have against this hotel is the TIME SHARE FOLKS - they will offer you a FREE GIFT when you arrive. This is a ruse to get you to listen to their sales pitch - They will deny it is a time share (B...S it is A TIME SHARE). These people can be very pushy (in our case to the point where they will invite themselves to sit with you while you have a late night drink with your spouse) I will not go into the details of our run in with them but if there was one thing that would keep me from rebooking with this hotel chain it is the harrasement I felt we received at the hands of these sales people. I did not pay a decent sum for a weeks vacation with my wife and son to spend time sitting listening to a sales pitch, especially when you consider the reserved club site for members is in the basement of the main hotel and the reserved site at the beach is at the back of the pool = furthest from the ocean (you've got to be kidding). Anyway enough ranting about the time share peeps, if you're looking for a decent spot for sun and surf, a nice quiet, clean room this is as good as any. Last but not least kudos to Air Canada Vacations for their assistance with a couple of small matters we needed help with.

Room Tip: there is a construction project underway at this time if you want to avoid looking at it there are s...
