“I would go back”
Reviewed 24 July 2012

This resort was great. The staff was friendly and helpful. The bartenders were a lot of fun and quick to serve you. The grounds were well kept. The air conditioner was great after a hot day at the beach. The pool bar gets a little crowded but that was not a problem as you could get drinks from other areas.
The food was average and could use some improvements.
This would be a great place for families as they have something for everyone.
No one bothers you and you can relax and enjoy your stay.

On July 12, we found the Riu Bambu Hotel while shopping for last minute deals with Apple Vacations. We read a number of reviews regarding Riu Bambu. Of course, some were positive and some not so positive. In any event, we decided to give the hotel a shot. Our trip went from July 16th to July 20th. Based on the aforementioned reviews, I was leary of the check-in process, the attitudes from the Staff and was not sure how we would sleep on those mattresses. When we arrived Monday morning, we were given a complimentary drink and found check-in to be quite easy and smooth. We had two rooms; each with 2 (connected)double beds. Unfortunately, when we enterred both rooms there was stong odor which took some time getting used to. Our rooms were cleaned daily. We noticed that the beds were firm. However, this was not an issue since we sleep on firm mattresses at home. The air conditioner in one of our rooms was not as strong as I would have liked. I think this was a result of this room being a second floor end unit. Our second room was in the middle of the cluster and was significantly cooler. The Beach was absolutely amazing with the endless palm trees and clean white sand. We found the Staff to be courteous and hard working! The drinks were watered down, but had good taste! We tried the Asian restaurant and found that it was average at best! We enjoy sushi and sashimi. But found the sushi offerings limited to rolls with very little flavor. The rice used to make the rolls was too dense. We found that it overwhelmed the flavor of the sushi. My wife enjoyed the spring rolls. I enjoyed the soup which was a combination of Miso and what seemed like creme of asparagus/creme of celery soup. The regular buffet restaurant was fine under the circumstances. We enjoyed the breakfast and dinner offerings. We had plenty of different food options. The guacamole and salsa were amazing. We also enjoyed the chicken and pork dishes. The Paella, served on Thursday night, was quite good with plenty of shrimp and muscles! There were a number of salads, cheeses and lunch meats (if you like lunch meat) to choose from. The entertainment was good. We especially liked the Circus show with the amazing acrobats and clowns! I would be remiss if I did not mention the Apple Vacations representative at the hotel. She was hardly ever on site at the hotel. We could have used her help when the Apple driver refused to take us to the airport for our departure flight saying that we were not on his list! This caused an hour and a half delay with our airport transfer. If the rep had been available, I think this problem would have been avoided. Bottom line, the hotel is not a five star resort. It is more like a three star resort. The five star hotel is located next door at the Riu Palace.

This is the last we will book a Riu! Our first time was Riu Negril a few years back, roaches, terrible service if any at all,and dirty. The second the Riu in Mazatlan, lucky for me I did not see roaches but still very dirty and service does not exist. The same goes for the Riu bambu.I am not naive I know the risks of cockroaches in the tropics, but they are controllable. We are seasoned travelers to the tropics and this we are guessing to be our 40th trip only twice have we had the nasty experience of spending our hard earned money to sleep and eat with the roaches and they were both Riu. The manager Ramon Castillo handled it nicely after seeing the first roach on the grill not even a foot from the food.He was on the phone immediately to our apple rep(Alicia Cano whom is useless) and hotel staff to fumigate the restaurant and I asked him to fumigate our room too to ease my mind, thinking my room might be ok since far from the restaurant and in separate blocks(I was wrong).I told him I could not eat on the premises,so he gave us his business card with a note on the back giving us permission to eat and drink at the Riu Palace Punta Cana next door.It eased my mind a bit although still a Riu,I was able to eat a little bit,but every time we went over we were interrogated which made us feel as if we were stealing. We returned to our room after our meeting with Mr.Castillo to cover and close up our belongings for the fumigating. Housekeeping showed up a few minutes later with a can of raid-not comforting. If you know anything about roaches this would barely put a dent in the population. And my point made when we returned to our rooms that evening to find roaches in our rooms.Another mad dash to the front desk,as we approached a we watched a mouse scurry behind a cabinet behind the front desk. After telling the front desk clerk he looks back and shrugs his shoulders. Now we get to the roaches in the rooms. We were offered another spraying or another room.Obvious the place is infested, another room to sleep with those roaches or stick with the ones we have????
As for the rooms if roach you can get one roach free(is doubtful),they are small but how much time do you spend in the room? Get one on the second floor, the high ceilings make it much better,if you are brave enough to still book this hotel.
The main dining The Colonial buffet, you will be lucky to get a clean table. The cleanest you will get is a flipped dirty cloth. The floors, tables and pretty much everything is dirty in all the restaurants.
The drinks are definitely watered down, the cocktail servers wander around picking up empty glasses, never once did we see them take a drink order or serve anyone. This is a first in a so called 5 apple in our experience. The bartenders have made an art of avoiding eye contact, and we always tip for every drink.Tipping does not work so save your money, seems the more we gave the worse it got. That also being a first at a 5 apple.
There is at least 3 hours with no food,so it is not a 24 hour all inclusive as they claim. The food is horrible. We know all inclusive food isn't good but this one takes the cake. It was never fresh, barely warm and the exact same thing day and night day after day after day. Normally an all inclusive changes the selection a bit for lunch and have a theme dinner to change it up,not here. We usually depend on breakfast which is normally the best meal at an A.I.,no such luck at the Riu breads not fresh no omelets made for you.We believe that the Riu bambu gets the Riu Palace Punta Cana 2 to 3 day old food.some of the same foods lets say a croissant from the palace to the bambu is quite the difference in freshness.
We got a great deal. IT IS NOT WORTH IT!!!!!!! There are other great deals to an actual 5 apple, this is not one of them. Stay away from Riu!

Just got back from here and would like to give a fair review

The positives:
The beach, it's beautiful
Staff are brilliant, especially waiters/bar men
Rooms are a good size
Trips offered are brilliant
Steak house and Asian well worth trying
Some shows are good And entertainment team are lovely! Join in with pool games and games on stage

The negatives
The food in main resturant/lunch time Not varied enough, eat the same things everyday. Big fault and put us off going again
Reception blunt and unable to speak basic english. We had no hot water for 3 days and when we asked reception why, no apology, explanation or info on when it would be back on, just a reply Of 'it's a problem'
Not really for couples, too many young kids running round, splashing in pool and shouting. Like all places but would be nice if the bar area was not open to children as we needed some place to relax without kids in our faces.
Building work makes everywhere bar the beach look a mess. Not told before we went.

On the whole enjoyable but not 5star as we would think, more like our 3 star, but beach is 5 star and trips are great! Staff(except reception) are a credit to the company.

I stayed at this hotel in the first week of April 2011, it was a fantastic holiday and a really romantic experience. A brilliant waitress called Bienvenida made our evenings a pleasure, the restaurant reservation clerk was very accommodating. This is not to mention the amazing grounds, views, activities, local produce and the FOOD. I personally enjoy Caribbean food like no other type so I was absolutely in my element.

The BEST holiday I've ever been on. Anyone who moans about this resort is a fool. A common moan I've read is that the staff did not speak good English, this is in fact wrong, many spoke English, Spanish, French, German and in some cases Russian. Nevertheless this is a Spanish speaking country and these people should consider the possibility that they were the ones not putting the effort in by only speaking English.

Overall rating 10/10, would go back again and again and again!
