We went for Thanksgiving with family from Florida and California. We had two teenagers, two preteens, and one elderly, and we were all accommodated well.
This is a great family resort. The children had free rein, and they loved being able to eat at the restaurants by themselves or near us. They had fun with the tennis, archery, sailboating, kayaking, etc.
The staff and guests were all friendly. The food was excellent. The drinks were fine, and the wine they included for meals was decent vin du pays. No complaints on that front.
The only thing that disappointed me was the location on the ocean. It was quite rough the whole time we were there, and snorkeling was not even an option. The area they designated for it was away from the quieter water, so that was weird. We took an expensive snorkeling excursion to the other side of the island, and if you're interested in snorkeling, maybe look into one of the all-inclusive resorts on that side. The water was much calmer and clearer on that side of the island.
We also took another expensive tour of the island, and it was well worth it. The Santo Domingo house where Columbus lived: fascinating. The government house where the dictator later lived (can't remember his name) had some of his outrageous collection of weaponry, including a suit of Pancho Villa with a photograph of Pancho himself in the suit. This is where the Americas really started, and the history is palpable. I don't think venturing there on your own would be a good idea, due to the poverty. But that was a lovely excursion. It took almost all day.

Room Tip: Upgrade to ocean view.

We have stayed with Club Med at Bintan in Indonesia twice previously and found it to be fantastic family holiday experience. On this basis, we decided to stay at Club Med at the end of a holiday to the US and chose Punta Cana based on its excellent reviews as a family holiday resort. We paid extra for a deluxe room, having previously stayed in a standard room. Our experience of Club Med at Bintan was miles ahead of Punta Cana.

We found Punta Cana to simply be too big a resort, and in the future, would look more closely at the size of a resort, opting for a smaller resort. On the first day, we circled to pool trying to find somewhere to sit and found a couple of sun chairs not adorned by towels or other "reservation tools", only to be abused moments later by some lady claiming they were hers. Some people were in the same spot each day and must have got up at the crack of dawn to reserve seats.

We found the standard rooms in Bintan to be better than the deluxe rooms at Punta Cana. We had to request a change of rooms following being locked out our room following the door lock failing due to flat batteries and the toilet blocking and overflowing into the room. It took a day to get this and suprisingly the new room in the same block was a much better standard.

We had mixed experiences with staff at Punta Cana.

Please put people on reception who can speak English, as a number of times we had difficulties with people who could only speak French or Spanish, both at reception and other places in the resort.

My daughter loves the trapeze and turned up on the first day to be told she was there at the wrong time despite it being the time shown on the notice board. Luckily the haed of the trapaze noticed she was upset and let her stay that day. A female member of the trapeze staff was quite frankly snappy and rude and had my daughter in tears one day. Our experience with staff in Bintan on the trapeze was far more friendly and fun - maybe once again a factor of the size of the place!

My son absolutely loved the mini club and we found all of the staff in the mini club to be fantastic, particulalry Markinson and Jimmy.

We also found Rafik in guest services to be excellent and helpful, and often stepped into help with shortcomings at reception.

The cost of the resort photos is expensive and over the top once again compared to our previous experience with Club Med.

On balance we enjoyed the stay and the range of activities, and will stay with Club Med again, but in a smaller resort.

If you ever tried to find a great vacation place for entire family you know that it is not easy to make
everyone happy. Before we picked Club Med in Punta Cana we did some basic research, read reviews and tried to make sure that the place is appropriate for both kids and adults.
At the end we decided on five trident Cub Med in Punta Cana. It turned out to be a great choice. Wide variety of activities throughout the day for kids in Petit and Mini Club and for grown ups throughout the club made everybody happy. Staying in five trident section of the club located in the quiet section of the club, called Tiara and managed by Vincent, has its definite advantages. First off, you're staying in one of nicely equipped two-bedroom, two bathroom villas by the ocean with a private infinity pool and a Pearl bar.
Each bedroom of the villa is equipped with its own TV. There is Wi-fi, computer to get your emails and a mini-bar with variety of drinks and snacks. All at no extra charge.
The bar serves delicious cocktails and snacks throughout the day. Each evening there is a cocktail party for Tiara residents with variety of French champagnes, refreshments and live music.
The 24/7 concierge is staffed with very friendly, and very helpful GOs (Elizabeth, Caroline, Roody) who really work hard and go out their ways to accommodate all the requests ranging from nightly dinner reservation on the terrace of Espaniola restaurant (a beautiful restaurant right by the ocean), excursion reservation, arranging for kids club reservations, transportation, notify you of all upcoming events, and handle just about everything else related to your stay at the villa.
This concierge alone makes a big difference in your stay.
Food in two restaurants (Samana and Espaniola) is delicious with cuisine changing daily . Food presentation is often quite amazing and artistic matching or exceeding many five start establishments. Well French and known for great food.
All activities in the club are run very well with friendly and helpful GOs.
General atmosphere is warm, friendly and international.
We met some families with kids that came to this place two, three, four times.
After staying there one week we're not surprised why. You're getting a really great family vacation where is always something for everyone. Regardless of age or interests.
We'd definitely recommend Club Med in Punta Cana whether for family vacation or a honey moon.
It's a beautiful, nicely managed resort.

Room Tip: Haven't seen other rooms but five trident villas have great location, service and amenities.

This was our 3rd Club Med vacation in the past couple of years, with the previous two locations being at Columbus Isle and Cancun Yucatán. This year, I traveled with my wife, 3 daughters (ages 19, 17, and 15), and my daughter’s friend (age 19). We flew from LAX to Fort Lauderdale to Dominican Republic on Spirit Air. I definitely do not recommend Spirit Air and have no plans of flying with them again. We experienced a 2 to 4 hour delay on all the flights (LA-Fort Lauderdale-Punta Cana and back), they removed our baggage from our plane without notifying us beforehand and shipped it to us the following day (1:30 AM). Seats were very cramped (mine did not recline) and there was a charge from ticketing, lugguage, drinks and snacks.

At the airport in the Dominican Republic, we quickly found the Club Med representative who whisked up away to our waiting shuttle. We happily arrived to the usual GO team, cold towels, and drinks at Club Med a mere 5 minutes later. The village was only 50% occupied our week, so I asked for a change of rooms to the third floor in Ovando. Reception was very accommodating, and we were given a suite for the 4 girls and a room for my wife and myself just down the hallway. The rooms were ready and baggage was delivered within an hour.

Weather: The weather was unpredictable, with on and off rain the first two days, strong winds the following day, and then the usual sunny skies and ocean breezes the rest of the week. Humidity, of course, was high, and there were mosquitoes. Bring bug spray if you are susceptible to bites. A tip for Club Med would be to install large fans in the Theater and the Samana restaurant as it was usually very warm in the evenings.

Rooms: Rooms were the usual Club Med accommodations, and they worked just well for us. We were lucky enough to have balconies in both rooms that faced the ocean. Ovando had a choice location as it was relatively near both restaurants, the pool, and the beach. Our rooms had no problems with the air conditioning, but other guests mentioned that their AC wasn’t cool enough for them. Rooms were cleaned once or twice a day, and housekeeping spoke predominately Spanish which wasn’t a problem. A tip for GMs- take the time to learn some basic greetings and verbs French and Spanish as it will go a long way here. That said, if you only know English, you’ll still do fine.

Activities/ Beach: Our entire party enjoyed all the activities and tournaments offered that we were interested in: trapeze, sailing, kayaking, archery (Rub), zumba (Kimberly and Alexandra), volleyball (Tony), and aqua aerobics. The ocean was very shallow at only 5 feet or so, and this depth extended out very far from the beach. There were weeds, but the staff worked tirelessly to clean the shore of them in the mornings, and the sand was white and very pretty with tiny bits of pink coral. My daughter was initially concerned that there was no wakeboarding here like at Columbus Isle and Cancun, but she was able to keep herself entertained with sailing, archery, and trapeze. A special shout out to the circus team, who encouraged me, a dad who is not so young anymore, to do multiple tricks including the catch on the trapeze, and who put my 19 year old daughter in the trapeze show later during the week for the split catch. Much thanks to Manny, Marcelo, Alexandra, Jose Luis, Henry, and Atila.

Food: The food here was good, but not as great as Columbus Isle. As usual, the breads, desserts, fish, and meat were excellent. We enjoyed eating at the Hispanola restaurant, which was located right by the ocean. It definitely offered the most beautiful views of all the restaurants from the 3 CMs, as well as a cool ocean breeze. There were birds flying in and out of the restaurant, but this was only a slight problem during breakfast and lunch. Just make sure to leave someone at the table when getting more food so the birds wouldn’t be tempted.

GOs: The GOs here were mostly from the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Canada, France, with a couple from the United States and other parts of Europe. Language barriers were not a problem. The GOs were very lively and often made up much of the dancing during crazy signs, at the bar after dinner, and at the nightclub.

GMs: Our week, guests were mostly French and American. There were many kids filling up the mini clubs. Our youngest daughter joined the teen club and had a lot of fun (GOs Merielle and Andy), and the three older girls made friends with the other American teenagers. Since the village was only halfway occupied, it was very peaceful with lots of empty chairs by the pool and no lines for activities or at the bar. There was more topless sunbathing by European women here than in Columbus Isle. Due to the amount of guests, only one restaurant was open for all meals (alternating between Samana and Hispanola). When an additional 800 flew in on our last night (Saturday), they began to open both restaurants. The dress codes were elegant, black and flashy, all white, red and white, and coffee. There were plenty of roaming photographers around the village. We opted to purchase the unlimited photo CD for $220 and the family photo shoot for an additional $50. We found the package worth it as we had plenty of pictures at the various activities, and the girls and my wife and I took the opportunity to do mini photo shoots at the beautiful beach during the week. The family photos turned out magnificently with the palm trees, sand, and ocean in the background, and our all white dress motif added an extra special touch.

All in all, it was another wonderful Club Med vacation. The girls said they would rather go back to Cancun for less humidity and for wakeboarding, while my wife and I would rather go back to Columbus Isle or try a new village in the Caribbean. Thanks Club Med Punta Cana!

I just completed the online-questionnaire sent by Club Med but there was no free space to make any notes. Since I know they monitor this site I will use this review for that purpose.

This is the 2nd Club Med we've stayed at in the past 18 months (Sandpiper, 1st). Living in South Florida we were surprised how "French" Sandpiper was, being only 2 hours north of us. Punta Cana is far more French. Our 7 year old was loooking forward to Kids Club after having a blast at the one in Sandpiper. The fact that about 70% of the kids spoke only french was very hard for her and she lasted only 2 days out of the full 4 days we were there. Had it been Spanish she might have been OK.

The GO's are very enthusiastic and speak 2-3 languages but other staff/bar staff don't speak much English. If you know Spanish you'll be fine. In the Kids Club, we'd like to mention Daphnee, whom our 4 year old adored, Folka, Dieter and Natalie.

The water sports were fun and we never had to wait long for a windsurfer, snorkel gear or Laser. Brittany was wonderful, as well as Kevin (Hakuna Matata). There was a french guy there too and I'm sorry that I don't recall his name but he was very helpful as well.

I was looking forward to the Trapeze and the staff there was great. Alexandra was gorgeous and super-friendly and the "guys" were so helpful. Many thanks to Atila, Manny, Jose and anyone else I forgot. They work soooo hard in the heat and pull many long hours making sure everyone stays safe and has a good time.

The food never fails to disappoint. Although pizza was available every day, our kids never ate a slice! Too many other choices. As noted with other reviewers, we rarely sat down to a completely-set table in Hispaniola. Always missing place settings or napkins.

A few things to know in advance: I had read to bring sunscreen so you don't have to buy. So although I brought 2 bottles, they had to go in the kid's bags for camp. I priced it at the boutique and was SHOCKED. I am not going to write the price but trust me and bring plenty of sunscreen so you don't have to buy it there. Didn't need the insect repellent I also brought, very few mosquitos.

It would have been nice to know the attire "themes" of the evening in advance. Maybe there was a way to find them out and I just wasn't aware?

Compared to our family Club room at Sandpiper (one of the few remaining not-yet-renovated ones) our room here was tiny. I know that they are trying to adhere to "green" standards but a little diluted bleach goes a long way in keeping the shower stalls clean. The mold was SCARY! And being a spoiled Floridian, although we had it set at 68 the thermostat read a clammy 76.7 the whole time we were there and would not go any lower. Housekeeping (Daisy) kept it clean enough though.

One of the questionnaire questions asked about "Artistic Services" offered. While I remember some classes of the sort offered at Sandpiper, there was nothing similar here. I realized after we left that there was supposed to be a Kids Cooking Class offered here and Ixtapa yet I never heard a peep about it the whole time. It might have been something for our oldest to do when she decided not to go back to Kids Club.

I don't believe we ever saw Barq, the VIllage Manager, although I saw his name mentioned on the printed material. If he was around, we must not have been aware who he was. I do remember the Village Manager at Sandpiper always being around.

I do have to mention that I had to place a call to Customer Service before our trip to inquire about the airport transfer. Pam, called me back after the call, to try to straighten out the fact that our middle names were missing on our reservation and called the airline for us to get them added so that we didn't have any issues. That was a step above and beyond. Also, if you book your airfare through them, call and get your airline confirmation number because it is not listed on your paperwork. When I went to print out our boarding passes I realized they hadn't booked us any seats and the only 4 left were not together. Our trip home had a layover and we again did not have any seats assigned.

Overall we will probably go back to Club Med in a few years. Maybe Ixtapa or Cancun. We would DEFINITELY go sooner if they re-opened an American mountain resort for skiing. We heard a rumor that may happen.....I hope so!
