“Another Fantastic Stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 June 2012

Recently returned from our second visit to the GBP Ambar in 8 months so we knew what to expect and were not disappointed. This is a fantastic hotel with great staff, excellent food and accommodation. The staff are generally pleasant, courteous and very attentive although some staff on reception are not as helpful/welcoming as I would expect. The hotel's grounds are stunning and kept in pristine condition. The weather was hot and sunny, probably the best of our five times in the Dom Rep. We tended to spend our days relaxing by the pool or on the beach, both of which are great, but you do have to get by the pool early if you want to get chairs with some shade. The beach is great and ideal for those leisurely walks. We used the trolley buses several times and they are a great way to get around the complex. The great advantage of the Ambar is that you can use all the facilities of other GBP hotels in the complex but only Ambar guests are permitted in that hotel, which is adults only. We ate at several of the gourmet restaurants and, as before, the food was excellent. We considered that the food at the Bella Italia (GBP Esmeralda) had actually improved since our previous stay at the Ambar. The buffet restaurant at the Ambar is excellent and exceeds the speciality restaurants at hotels where we have stayed in the past. As previously reported nightlife at the Ambar is limited and during our stay we saw the Assistant Manger to ask if the bar could be kept open until midnight, with some more varied music and the fans left on in the main lobby to make this more pleasant. Hopefully this will be given serious consideration as many guests raise similar points. We stayed in room 70308 which is in a great location but despite reporting a problem with the air conditioning, and receiving prompt responses from maintenance each time, this was not properly resolved. I am certain that we will revisit the Ambar again as it is an excellent hotel.

Room Tip: Corner suites are considerably larger and top floor quieter.

My husband and I visit the Dominican Republic often to visit family; however, this was our first time on the eastern side of the island. We chose Gran Bahia Principe Ambar based off of reviews and boy did we make the right selection for our ten year anniversary. The resort is simply gorgeous with lush and colorful gardens, pristine beaches and great pools. Our room was simply breathtaking and every day, my husband and I would return to it decorated with beautiful tropical flowers in our bathroom and upon our bed. It just so happened that we were there during a fool moon which simply gave the beach at night a magical feel to it. We chose Ambar because we wanted a vacation without children (we have four boys and needed a break). The only time we did encounter children was when we went to the part of the resort for entertainment and shopping. The only downside, was the food. On the first day there the food selections were great, however as we progressed through the week, the food became boring and we often wondered if some of it was recycled. That being said, this is a great place to go and spend a nice, quiet and relaxing time with the one you love.

Dear Guest,

Warm regards from Gran Bahia Principe Ambar!!

Thank you for your comments and we are very pleased that your 10th Anniversary was everything that you expected.

We appreciate that you have highlighted our colorful gardens, pristine beaches and great pool. Also, we have shared your concern wtih the Executive Chef with regard to the food and its rotation. Please know that we do not recycle food, this goes against our standards and the standards of the local health department.

We thank you once again for sharing, we hope to have the opportunity to host you for many anniversarys to come.

This was our 5th stay at Ambar, we have stayed at Esmeralda and Punta Cana. Ambar is for 18+ Adults mostly couples.
Location: Beautiful Hotel, beautiful Landscaping.
Rooms: Clean, spacious and warm.
Food: Excellent buffet (Don't miss Seafood Buffet @ Thursdays) a la carte Dom Pablo, Bella Italia and El Olivo are also great.
Pool: Beautiful, big, just wonderful.
Beach: Beatiful Bavaro beach, you have the seaweeds depending on the week that you're there but they clean them up pretty fast.
At Ambar you can't go wrong, a complainer is always a complainer.
I will go back.

Room Tip: All the rooms are greatly situated. But the best room is 60308 you get the ocean view and the pool v...

To all readers. This was our first trip ( June 1st to the 8th, 2012) to an AI and we picked this spot based on reviews from TA and feedback from people who had been there. We own timeshare in Hawaii and therefore have never went to an AI resort. So our review is based on "first timers" who have no other resort to compare with.
We left from Toronto, Canada.

Air Transat flight was great. We upgraded to the Option Plus so I picked our seats and we got a few perks going down. On our way back we got bumped to first class as there were a few open seats on the return flight. Nice way to end a holiday.

Connections between the airport and the resort were done quiet well. We had our own bus that took us from the airport right to the Bavaro and then a quick shuttle to the Ambar.

The resort is a tropical paradise. Well maintained and a beautiful setting with spotless grounds and well maintained landscapes. You could eat off the tiled floors or the walkways they were that clean.
Staff is very friendly with only a few issues with the English language.
Rooms were very nicely laid out and clean. We ended up with building 64, room 305 which was right in front of the pool area. The resort is not that big (only 560 rooms) so it was easy to get around. We could see a bit of the pool from our balcony but buildings 60 and 67 our the best for pool view.
The beach and pool area were perfect. We walked up and down the beach and we feel that the area in front of the Gran Bahia Priincipe Complex has the best combination of beach, palm tress, and layout. The Ambar has a "private" area of the beach just for their customers so we never had a problem finding a nice spot and no children allowed. In fact we had the same spot every day which was only a few feet from the pool area so we could do the pool or the ocean in only a few steps.

The only complaint about the beach area was there was a lot of sea weed that was in the water and washing up on shore. We had to walk down a bit to get into some clear ocean swimming. We heard that this in not common for this area. Could have been a storm related issue. We did not have a drop of rain during our stay. 100% sun!!!!!.

The food in the buffet and restaurants were up to our standard. As first timers we have no comparisons but we enjoyed all our meals. The house wines were very good and we liked the fact that at the buffet the food stations were small which meant they were replenished more frequently. Some food was a bit bland but they were catering to the masses and you could always add S and P to your liking.
We had unlimited a la cart so we went to five restaurants. Three at the Ambar and two at the Bavaro. We enjoyed the food and service and the only complaint would be that the service was a bit fast. We like to enjoy our meals at a slower pace while it seamed they were pushing the food out to get you finished faster. Even when we told the waiter the food still came out fast.

The Amber being couples only was quieter and we loved that. There is not much going on at this resort but all you need to do is get a quick ride to the main complex area and you had evening shows and a small Casino, and I mean small Casino.

It mentoned that tips were appreciated and after talking to one of the managers we found out that the restauarant staff work an average of 16 hours per day and usually 12 days straight. They live on the resort in staff buildings. In fact three ladies were pregant and having to stand 16 hours must have been a challenge. I spent most of my extra money tipping out the waiters, servers, and bar tenders. I watched a lot of people not even tip a dollar at breakfest, lunch, dinner, bar service, or anything. I know it says optional but I could not in my heart not leave something for these people. I agree if service is bad tell someone and don't tip but we found only great service!!!!

All in all it was a vacation to remember and my wife is talking about going back next October 2013. Rick and Terry M.

Room Tip: Buildings 60,64,67 are closer to pool area. There are three floors so if you don't like walking...

We had another great stay at the Ambar 5/31 - 6/7. The weather couldn't have been more perfect. This trip, we pretty much hung out down on the beach, rather than the pool. We had no issues with the towel game. There were plenty of open palapa's each morning. Yes, if you wanted to get right at the front of the beach, you had to get down early to lay out your stuff, but it never was a problem. We did several a la cartes and really enjoyed the Garden Grille. We passed on all the entertainment at the Bavaro, since we'd been there several times before. Again, I highly recommend this resort. It's a great value and the service is great too!

Room Tip: We stayed in building 64, room 64314, which was right next to the pool. Make sure you email the res...
