What a place that is. I would say, one of a kind in Puerto Plata, the Punta Cana of the 80s and early 90s. The attention that my wife, my daughter and myself got since we reach was fantastic. The room, the restaurants, the service were five stars. Congratulations to the Garcia family for such a wonderful place in my beloved Dominican Republic. People like Karen at the main office, Juan and Agustin at the pool bar and Francisco at breakfast time make proud to be a Dominican. Hope to see you soon guys.

Room Tip: Junior suite facing the water

We went for 4 nights to escape a brutal winter and it was the perfect choice. The staff was incredibly warm, helpful and genuine, and made our stay even better. The property was beautiful, stylish and exceeded our expectations. Our room was elegant yet comfy, very spacious and immaculate. Sleeping with the breeze blowing from open french doors was such a treat. Daily breakfast was included, and more than generous (hint: if you're polite to the staff, they'll let you try lots of things on the menu). The spa was great, restaurant was delicious, rooftop pool and jacuzzis were a true oasis. My only nits to pick would be the cocktails - while tasty, we felt they weren't very potent and we ended up ordering more than we normally would have (which adds up) - and the steady stream of vendors on the beach. We spent the majority of our time at the property, but did venture out for a tour of some local villages which was a lot of fun. Keep in mind this is a boutique hotel, not a large resort - I wouldn't recommend it for families. But for a short, relaxing, romantic getaway, this was perfect and we'll be back.

Room Tip: Second floor felt like more of an escape, and more private.

As a family, when we travel, we tend to favor premium hotels. We recently stayed at Casa Colonial and found it to be a one-of-a-kind experience. It's a real oasis: the rooms were comfortable, beautiful and spacious, the service was superior and the food simply excellent. The spa and pool were well maintained. It is a small hotel and the service is personalized. It's right on the beach, which made the stay relaxing and enjoyable each day. We plan to return.

Room Tip: Make sure you select a beachfront room.

If you want a vacation of total relaxation, peace and quiet in a boutique hotel that has some of the nicest staff you will ever meet and a level of service rarely found in any hotel, then go to Casa Colonial. One word of caution; do not have a heart attack when you turn off the road into the Playa Dorado complex! Once you have driven past the all-inclusive hotels and through the gates of casa Colonial, you will be in a haven of tranquility. Even though the hotel has all-inclusive properties on either side or others nearby, noise was never a problem. In fact, I forgot there were hotels nearby! Second word of caution; don’t get too concerned about the drive to the hotel from the airport! Personally I would recommend in investing in a transfer by the hotel from the airport ... I didn’t like the look of the local taxis! The mini bus was fun ... even if the approach to overtaking has particular local “flair”! You’ll be fine ... just take a deep breath and trust the driver! He knows what he’s doing!

The main building of the hotel is terrific; cool, immaculate and welcoming. Check-in was easy and very welcoming. The tour of the hotel was also very helpful. The room was great! Spotlessly clean, large (we had a junior ocean suite on the ground floor) with a large comfortable bed and inviting soaking tub! The room was kept incredibly clean and the incense that welcomed us each evening was a nice touch.

The pool on the third floor is great with plenty of room to lounge and take in lots of sun. If you want an Olympic size pool this is not the place for you. But I repeat; this is a vacation not training camp for a triathlon! You can also have lunch at the small restaurant by the pool. The gym is actually very good (well ... so I was told!) I can absolutely recommend the spa! The massage was great (and for a very good price ... compared to NYC), with sauna and steam room. We didn’t go on the beach but it looked absolutely fine from the vantage of the infinity pool!

The food at Casa Colonial is worthy of a review of its own. Breakfast can be ordered from room service (hint; order the “Super Continental” and share it ... it’s huge!) as well taken in the verandah restaurant. This restaurant serves food throughout the daytime and is great for lunch. Try the fish tacos or curry (order it with chicken instead of beef ... wow)! The Lucia restaurant is superb. The Vietnamese roles are addictive, the mushroom risotto is dreamy, the fish specials are awesome and the goat dish is a must! If after all of that you want to splurge go for the ‘majarette’. Unbelievable what cream of corn in condensed milk with nutmeg and cinnamon served cold tastes like ... yummy! The wine list is also great but if you want a safe bet that requires zero use any brain cells (it is a vacation!) just stick to the house wines. The Merlot is particularly delicious particularly with the beef tenderloin.

The bar is also worth taking time to sit and enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail ... or three! Luz is a great bartender who makes the best cocktails with a smile that has to be seen to be believed and Miguel is great ... an absolute gentleman.

The hotel was so quiet it felt like it was empty all the way through the vacation.

Finally, Basilea (the General Manager) and her staff are what make this hotel what it is; a haven of peace and tranquility where you will feel like you have stepped into Shangri-la.

Room Tip: Go for a Junior Suite ... perfect!

We had spent a total of 12 days in the Dominican and had an incredible experience until we arrived at Casa Colonial for our honeymoon.

There are 2 good things that this hotel has to offer. The service at the rooftop bar/restaurant was fantastic. The food/service in the hotel restaurant was really well prepared and flavorful.

That being said, the rest of our experience made us wish we had stayed at anyone of the nearby hotels. The room: when we arrived, the light in the hallway was flickering like a strobe light. We asked for it to be repaired and it took 3 requests and 2 nights to get it done. In the bathroom there was some sort of gelled excrement on the wall. We complained and asked for it to be cleaned every morning. It was there all 4 days and is probably still there. We ordered room service one morning to have on our balcony. It took 4 trips for them to bring what was part of their standard Super Continental breakfast because they forgot items-there was no special order. We ended up not eating the breakfast because there were 2 large hairs in the saran wrapped granola. When we complained the hotel Manager said they would remove the breakfast, which we did not eat, from our bill. It was still on the bill upon our checkout. It took 26 minutes and a manager to be called to get it removed.

Service: there were 8 occupied rooms and when we went down to dinner the 1st night there was no one in the restaurant so we wanted a bit more life. We asked the bellman about the Asian restaurant down the street. He said we needed a reservation to eat there but would call and find out if we could be fit in. After 2 min he returned and said they were booked. We walked to the Asian restaurant the next day to make reservation. We were told that no reservations were needed. Shocked, we asked if they were booked at 8pm last night. He said it was their slow time and they had room. The bellman lied to us to keep us at the hotel and spend $ in their restaurant!

When we complained about our experience, they offered no real apologies. And the Manager even said "We have 12 rooms filled and every guest believes their needs are of most importance. But, even if we were full you should have not had that experience." No apologies, no compensation.

We stayed at Hotel Catalina and Casa Kimball both incredibly great experiences. The minimum standards that a Marriott sets for itself would have been excellent compared to the experience we had at Casa Colonial. Don't be seduced by the other reviews, there are many beautiful hotels on the same beach surrounding this hotel-go there not Casa Colonial

Room Tip: My tip-stay somewhere else.
