This is simply the most idyllic retreat from reality I have ever visited. The cottages, pool, and grounds are immaculate, and the landscaping, with palm trees, cacti, and blossoming almond trees are impeccably groomed. The small flagstone pathways lead to the cottages, and are beautifully lit at night by little lightposts. All of the landscaping is gorgeous, and each villa has a small front patio with two seats and a coffee table. This is a tiny little getaway, where everyone gets to know one another. The pool is about 15' x 30', and usually is empty. The villas are very spacious, with large living room and bedrooms, nice dining area, kitchen, and two full bathrooms. Mine had one of those two-person jet tub things. Most importantly, everything is clean, clean, clean. When we were there, everyone was in the 50s to 70s range, so if you're 23 and looking to hook up and dance 'til dawn, keep looking.
Samuel at the desk and Victor in the restaurant are pretty much the "go to" people in the place, and boy do they love their jobs. As one of them said, "We don't just have guests, we have family." They really, really make you feel like family. They will answer any questions you may have, and will arrange any transportation through a non-affiliated cab company down the block. You won't have to worry about cabbies ripping you off on the fares, because they know they will catch hell from Sam and Victor. Samuel arranged for a cab to meet us at the airport ($45.USD), and there was a guy with a placard waiting for us. We took a cab into Central Puerto Plata, ($25.USD round trip), had a great afternoon, and the cab was waiting for us at the agreed-upon time.
Unfortunately, this island is severely economically depressed. There are "for sale" signs everywhere, as foreign homeowners and investors have left. The signs of depression are everywhere, with abandoned homes, etc. We walked everywhere, to beaches, restaurants, etc., and never once did we feel threatened or nervous, even after dark. To the contrary, the residents couldn't have been nicer. If you stumble your way through a Spanish-English pocket dictionary and don't treat them like dirt, you'll make a lot of friends.
The Villas are about a football field from the beach, and there are the coolest little restaurants all along it, with great food and great prices. There are also vendors walking along with fresh coconuts, lobster, etc. There are also a few really comfortable restaurants within a 15 minute walk, and a decent grocery store less than ten minutes' walk. There's a really nice gym/spa/golf course five minutes' walk down the road, with a full-size pool and very nice restaurant. Membership is $35.USD a month so it's a score even for a week. Like Jazmin, almost all retirees from USA and Canada.
I would take a pass on the meal plan (sorry, Victor!) because there are just so many neat restaurants nearby. If you could get just the breakfast, that would be ideal, because you could spend time with Victor over his excellent pancakes and bacon. You could also do "coffee and" on your little patio. I would also pass on the trips to "Lifestyles" buffet and show. It's a mass production Disney/Disco/Vegas glitter zoo.

Well, what can I comment on this sir! You are among the very few persons that really got the idea of what we are, what we have to offer and what we really planned to offer. Many guests come and stay with us but did not previously read about who we are and what to expect for. We are so so so please that we fulfilled your expectations. A little note on the meal plan is that since there was not much persons that signed up for it, the chef did not come for that week and left Victor to handle the situation. Victor is great but is not the full accomplished chef that you deserve. Next time you visit us, you may not sign up for the meal plan but I assure you that the chef will come and prepare you a meal that would make you change your mind.

Thank you once more and on behalf of all the staff, we wish you a blessed and long life,

Dulce

Top of my mind is very friendly and helpful staff, all of them, they made the hotel what it is. The hotel itself was recently renovated, so the places were in good condition. Air conditioning turned and warm water came when I red instructions and act on them. The beach was just a five-minute walk. A quiet place, and during a two-week visit to a larger resort, stressed the place yet idyll.
In this hotel it seemed that all of its inhabitants were like one family. Each talking to each other. Especially gathered before dinner time telling what they had done during the day.

The photographs of a local beach together with lodging accommodations in need of an upgrade are mostly accurate. However, let these images persuade you that your overall experience will be any less enjoyable, especially if you are looking at this property with a budget in mind. The staff are delightful, especially Victor who hosts the shared dining room. The local beach offers gentle surf, wide sandy beaches and a nice mix of locally owned restaurants, bars and hang-outs. The entire community is behind a gated community, yet the streets feel a buzz with non-threatening locals who support an interesting population of expats and beach-goers from many countries. The place really grew on us over a few days and we would recommend it for the adventurous in spirit.

Just spent 2 weeks at Villas Jazmin and thoroughly enjoyed it.The cottage we stayed in was clean and had a fully equipped kitchen, A/C in the bedroom, hot water in the shower, and a well maintained pool. Elena and Louisa in housekeeping were excellent.
Dulce and Samuel in reception were most helpful in arranging a city tour and a snorkelling trip to Paradise Island as well as being there to answer any questions we had about the area.
The community of Costambar where the Villa is located is very safe to walk around and explore. The local people we met very friendly. It's a short walk to the beach which, unlike the larger resorts, is free of vendors hassling and hustling their wares. We felt like we were part of a community not tourists.
Victor, our maitre d' / server/ all round organizer of meals, and shepherd of his flock on evenings when he accompanied the Jazmin patrons to the neighbouring Lifestyles Resort for buffet suppers and show, was amazing! Like The Energizer Bunny,he never seemed to stop and he never lost one of us as he maneuvered us through the masses of people at the large resort.
Even though the meals were basic we had many choices from a three course menu, with table service( by Victor) every evening. Sometimes accompanied by live entertainment by a most talented guitarist. Most lovely.
It was great fun meeting many fellow travelers from Finland, Hungary, Germany, USA, and Canada. Sharing our stories over the evening meal, of what we had seen and done that day, became a special time to look forward to.
We would recommend Villas Jazmin to anyone who wants to have a quiet, restful holiday and experience the real Dominican Republic.

After very long flight from Europe and transportation from airport we were quite tired, so we were not very happy that we had to wait our room quite long because of slow checking-in service. But it was worth of waiting when we finally got our room or it was more like a little cottage than just a room. It was spacious with fully equipped kitchen. Clearly the room was also recently renovated.
We had problem with warm water, but it was fixed very fast when we had told about that in reception.

The mandatory meal plan was not what we wanted and that was also surprise for when the resort emailed us about this. At the end it was worth for money, because it included Christmas dinner and New Years dinner with great program.

The staff was wonderful especially Victor, who was working almost all the time. In our opinion is that the whole resort would be in trouble without Victor. One minus was the food. The variety of daily menus was quite weak and the quality of food was not the best possible.

The location of Villas Jazmin was perfect for us, because we like to relax in quiet. The beach was near and there were many good restaurants. The local people were also friendly and we felt very safe in Costambar.

We can recommend Club Villas Jazmin for those who appreciate local people, local way of living and not expect everything to be as in home.

Thank you so much for your comment. We agree about Victor, he is a big asset for us. About the restaurant and choice of food, we are always changing and always improving as well as adding activities that may not have presented during your stay. Your comment would definitely help other travelers since you described exactly what is Costambar and who we are.

Many blessings to you and your family,

Dulce
