This was a family vacation with grown children. We arrived later at night and basically had no wait for check in. Our welcome packages were ready for us so it was even faster. The resort is very well run, with very clean rooms which meet all needs, They are not luxury units, but is a resort with a beautiful beach who wants to stay in their room? Beds are comfortable and air conditioning works well. We would have liked a screen on our patio door as we would like to sleep with the window open at times. Food was great. We only used Windows, the buffet as we did not feel we needed to try other spots in our one week stay. We did enjoy the Cocoa Cafe for coffees of all types, and noticed many young children enjoying choosing sweet treats there as well. We spent a good deal of our time on the beach, and availability of sun beds did not present a problem. There are some coral/grassy areas near the resort that allow the beginner snorkeler to enjoy themselves. I think the pool area might be harder to get a bed, but people there seemed to enjoy themselves too The grounds are very well maintained and well lit at night. I noticed that the resort is accessible and they have a spot on the beach as well which is great. There is a children's program and staff and children both seemed to be enjoying themselves whenever I saw them.
Our rooms were in building 7 which is a fair walk from most things, but really not an issue if you like to walk. The issue with this side of the resort is the night club at the mall next door. Most nights they have loud music very late into the night. It actually is the bass that is the problem as it carries to the rooms. If they could turn down the bass it would help a lot. We did not spend much time at the entertainment events either, however our son enjoyed the karaoke event one night.
I specifically want to commend the security staff on their professionalism in dealing with an issue for one of our group on the beach. While it was basically a self inflicted problem, they were very caring and kind to us all. Language barriers were part of the issue there, and I would like to recommend if possible that one staff person be available each shift who is fluent in the different languages you serve so they could be brought to an area to interpret if necessary.
There are individuals who are around the lobby area trying to encourage people to attend information sessions on a vacation club. While we did not participate here, we have before and we benefited from free services for listening. Generally tho, if you told them that you do not want to participate they do not bug you.
We arranged for a private Puerto Plata city tour with RV tours, Rene Robles owner/operator. I cannot recommend this highly enough as he uses certified tour guides and is willing to adjust the tour to your interests and abilities. I have done the PP tour with other groups twice before and I learned and saw so much more this time. Thanks to Julius for his humour and knowledge! The rates were comparable with a larger tour for our group of five.
There is wifi available for free in the lobby area, but it is spotty to say the least. If you are more tethered to your electronics, there are packages you can purchase to use wifi all over the resort.

Room tip: Building 7 and 8 are right on the street where the night club is so are noisy at night.

We have been to the Dominican Republic about a dozen times and stayed at many different resorts and I have to say that we were extremely impressed with this resort for several reasons. We were two couples who travelled to Sunscape Feb 3-10, 2017.

Food: Was the best we have had in the Dominican. We saw mixed reviews about the Italian A La Carte, but we thought it was great. We weren't that impressed with the Moscata a la carte. Food was ok, but it was crazy busy and therefore super slow. We actually went through the buffet after because we were still hungry. The Buffet was great, not a huge selection ,but what was there was really good. Overall, the food was great. We loved the air conditioning in the main buffet.

Drinks: Drinks were good, no issues with this. Lobby bar had the best drinks because they used Brugal rum, which we prefer.

Staff: We had good experiences with staff as they were friendly, helpful and patient.

Room: We loved our room (Building 12) and have often stayed in musty rooms because of the ventilation issues in the DR, but absolutely no issue with this at this resort.

Entertainment: Can't speak to this, we were in bed too early....

Beach: We thought that the section of the beach for this resort was probably the best along the Playa Dorada. It was well kept and beautiful.

The only issue, and I know that this is out of the resorts control, is people hogging all the chairs around the pool all the time. This is a small and crowded resort (or it was the week we were there) and it was nearly impossible to find a seat. It was very disappointing.

We would definitely go to this resort again.

Room tip: Building 12 was quiet and close to the beach. Nothing is far in this resort though.

This was our second Vacation to the Dominican this year and thirteenth overall. the Sunscape Puerto Plata is your average 4 star. It does have areas where it is very good and areas that need improvement. There al a carts (once you get in), entertainment staff, and coffee shop are excellent.

We arrived after 4 took a long time to check in and had to wait for a room. once in our room we had a few minor issues which where resolved over a couple of days and a number of calls.

We went with the deal of the day and I think I would upgrade if l was to return. Our room was very clean and had been done over but not as nice as I have seen elsewhere.

We found the beach very nice but windy and they do have lots of chairs. There is also a restaurant on the beach which is very nice If you do not like wind and vendors this is not the beach for you. we spent two weeks here and one week next door a couple of years ago and most days are windy.

The food can be repetitive but there is a good selection and if you mix in some a la carts you do get a better variety..

Pros The staff for the most part are excellent, the entertainment is better than some places, they seem to have a lot of kids activities, lots of chairs.

Cons; The sales people are always after you, the wind at the beach, the lobby has limited seating, pathways can be rough in places

Overall we feel we would go back but it would really depend on the price

The best Hotel ever. Germy, the wedding coordinator was on point. She went above and beyond for us. I didn't expect all I was provided. My wedding was March 10, 17. I was giving a suite which was located by the sun club; there we got everything and more.
