Walking through the market, you can see the culture and read about the history. The people at the market are very helpful and not pushy. They are very happy to discuss their history with you. They are very friendly. I sampled a cup of Sorrel. This is a drink that is made from Hibiscus leaves, ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg. This drink is usually only served during Christmas gatherings with fruitcake. They also had a Coconut candy they called "Coconut Pamphlet". It was delicious. I could sit and talk to these natives forever, they have such interesting stories to tell.

Many years ago, Roseau "Old Market Square" story was symbolic with liming and a well known meeting place for locals. The Old Market Square is as old as Roseau itself but the history you'd have to do it on your own.

What it is now and what is was however can't be more different. Ten years ago at least it was somewhere you could sit and have a relaxing drink, sit on the benches or lean on it's metal fences. Now it looks like a bustling place with lots of stalls selling to mainly tourists from the cruise ships that dock literally meters away. Add to that are the two issues that become very frustrating to the visitor and many locals. Firstly, there is a "lock down" around that section of Roseau, where access is nearly impossible for locals; and secondly the many personnel connected to the tourist trade and perhaps good for the many taxis and their drivers touting for trade.

The market traders themselves sell the same o, same o. The typical tourist products are on display. The sad thing is that although they all have Dominica printed on T/shirts etc, or you buy a national flag if you take a look at the tag; they are all made and produced in the Orient. All being said, there is a craft shop on the side facing the Ruins Rock Café that make and sell authentic Dominican crafts. More of this please. Yet, the Old Market Square still hold a special place in Dominican hearts.

I loved my visit to Dominica, and I really appreciated my time spent at the old market square. The history runs through the entire place! The stone floor which was built by the slaves themselves, and how bout the museum being right next to it! Dominica is just so beautiful, the nature , the people. I strongly recommend history and nature lovers to make this island a must visit!

Downtown if you head down town $2.00 (US) taxi / shuttle ride, you will find much better deals at 50% or more off, of the cruise port prices. There is not very much in the downtown area to see or do, and you will have pretty much seen and covered everything on 30 – 45 minutes. However across the street from the Taxi / Shuttle drop off / pick up, there are a number of street vendors that have some very nice local things that are all handmade as well and other normal gifts and souvenirs. The local vendors will even make many items while you wait and customize them. There are only one or two bars, and one or two places to get something to eat, and everything is pretty much outside. Overall Dominica seems to be one of the more depressed islands in the Caribbean, the people are friendly and such, and they want to sale you something, or take you on a tour of their island. Majority of the buildings are older and appears to be run down some, very narrow streets, very few sidewalks, and lack of building codes it seems, as there are many pipes and electrical wires just hanging on the side of buildings, and strung across the streets.

Roseau is very tired and in need of some serious TLC; we visited as part of a Caribbean Cruise. The Old Market Square is bustling with locals and tourists alike and is worth a visit if in town.
