The Hotel Nacional is a Havana icon that is certainly steeped in history. I really enjoyed my stay and the staff was extremely helpful and kind. That said, Havana is obviously experiencing a resurgence in travel but luxury travel isn't quite there yet. Despite the high prices of certain hotel rooms, the amenities just aren't there. If you can look past that, you'll enjoy your time.

Pros:
-The exterior of the hotel and the grounds are beautiful. The hotel sits across the ocean so you get lovely sunrise this time of year.
-the outdoor seating area is a nice place to have a mojito and smoke a cigar.
-the staff: friendly, helpful and accommodating. (full disclosure: I speak Spanish so that might help)
-air conditioning in the room was great.
-minibar in the room. Unlike many US hotels that are moving away from the minibar, the rooms here did have both alcoholic and non alcoholic options.
-breakfast on the executive floor is very elaborate with lots of options.
-Location is good. you are along the water but not on the water as it is separated by the street and the Malecon (sea wall). You are near the US embassy, walking distance to a few restaurants too. Short taxi or classic car ride away from old Havana.
-Safe hotel.
-cigar shop and rum shop onsite. Prices are same as elsewhere in Cuba.
-changing money at the hotel is easy and a good rate compared to other places.
-Value of drinks at the hotel is good.

Cons:
-The rooms. We were on the executive floor and although the rooms are spacious, they are in desperate need of a renovation. I understand that Cuba doesn't have the same amenities as the US, but updated beds, carpet, bathroom would go a long way in this great hotel.
-Wifi. It just doesn't really work in Cuba. Don't go to Cuba if you want to be connected the whole time. I didn't, so it wasn't a problem. But, if you are looking for connectivity, this isn't the place.

Overall, The Hotel Nacional is a lovely piece of history perched on a wonderful sport along the Malecon. But be aware that the rooms cost what they cost but dont expect bells and whistles, instead, I suppose the rooms have an old world charm. Even if you decide not to stay the Nacional, it's worth stopping by to do the historic tour or even to grab a drink.

Room tip: Pay for an executive floor room. The breakfast is included and quite good.

We visited Havana for 4 Days. Stayed at the Hotel Nacional and, boy I am glad I did. The hotel is definitely a landmark and you can actually disconnect there. I cannot imagine trying to stay anywhere else. A big shout out to Hector at the front desk. Your were so accommodating and helpful. Definitely want to say THANK YOU. And a big abrazo to Yezmin at the pool and breakfast. You are a sweetheart and very hard worker. You guys really made our trip special. Keep up the good and hard work. You both deserve to be recognized. Thank you for all your hospitality. Our housekeeper also was great. Thank you very much and hope to see you again soon.
Saludos de Miami!!!!

We visited Cuba for our Christmas Holidays in 2015, after we heard that the embargo era was ending. For our days in Havana we chose to stay at the Hotel Nacional which was a 5* historical hotel that we felt would ensure us a quality stay since the island's growth and prosperity had stopped in 1959. The hotel was indeed a great choice. Beautiful gardens reminding of a palace and rooms furnished with antiques along with the great location only 10' by car to the city center made our stay a dream come true. The management and staff of the hotel make great efforts to keep up to the 5* expectations even though it is extremely difficult with the country's economy. You realize it when you travel around Cuba as we did and stay at other 4* & 5* hotels, depending on what is available in the area, on all levels: room smell, furniture and linen, amenities, quantity of toilet paper and most importantly bathroom condition! Since this trip had always been a dream for us, staying at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba certainly helped us keep it on top, by far, on our list of places we've visited.

I would not fixate on the ratings, just read the reviews and determine if this is the right property for you. It is difficult to review Cuba so one has to be mindful of its history to make a respectful and proper review.

That said, this is a beautiful classic hotel built in 1930. The architecture is incredible, its location as well, and the grounds on which it sits are beautiful. Now, as most Cuba the property is Government owned after the 1959 Cuban Revolution and thus it's frozen in the 50's. So the good is you feel you are back in time, in what was a prominent hotel of the era full of the history of the monarchs, presidents, artists, and mobsters that passed through its hallways, restaurants and rooms. So the hotel feels like a museum. In fact you can walk through the corridors that were built during the Cuban Missile Crisis and sit aside to the Canyons that were built into the property.

The flip side, do not expect everything to work properly. The A/C in our room did not work, so they changed us to another room, but that other room the toilet did not flush and the water pressure in the shower was so strong it was painful. Our friends staying in another room did not have any problems. The tubs in both rooms rusty.

Service from the Hotel staff was generally very good, especially the valets, bellboys, and bar staff.

As for location, the hotel is not centrally located so you need a taxi to go out to the historic center. But the gardens are big and you can sip a coffee, mojito, look out to the Malecon, and just relax and listen to live music that is played in the evenings. The hotels in the center cannot offer this experience.

My personal experience was marred by the issues we had with our room, however, understanding this is Cuba, I would consider staying here again because I appreciate the history and the fact this is a grandiose hotel. If this property is restored to global standards in the future, it would be more than spectacular.

This is a spectacular old hotel in the grand style. Under the right management it could be a spectacular hotel. It is badly let down by reception. Check in, changing money and check out were all an ordeal. The hotel has 466 rooms and only one person (or at any rate only one person doing anything) on reception at any one time. Our room (with a sea view) was spacious, comfortable and clean. Breakfast consisted of a vast buffet with something for every taste.

Room tip: You really want a sea view.
