“Just Perfect”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 February 2012

We just returned a couple of weeks ago from our first trip to Barbados and it was one of the best trips we have ever been on. Most of it due to the fact that The Bougainvillea was the perfect choice. Though some may feel that the hotel is outdated, we feel it had character, not dated at all. Our room was always immaculate and had everything we needed. We had a studio room with great views of the ocean and pool. Just request the second or third floors for the best views. The staff was more than helpful anytime we called or visited the front desk and had suggestions on different excursions to go on. The grounds were well maintained and just beautiful. We ate at both restaurants and the food and service were great. Some readers say that the service was too slow, but you’re on vacation, who needs to rush? We didn’t find the service slow at all. Happy Hour was fun when we went and bartenders Roxanne and Dennis were always friendly and calling us by name. The hotel offers shuttles to Oistin’s Fish Fry on Friday’s and to the grocery store to pick up any goods needed. You need to go to Oistin’s on Friday, the food and atmosphere is exciting! St. Lawrence Gap has very nice restaurants, a bit pricey, but if you are like us, we go on vacation knowing that it may be a bit pricier for a really good meal off of the resort. Don’t forget to swim with the turtles and go to Harrison’s Cave. Great excursions!! We just absolutely loved our stay at the Bougainvillea and we have told everyone who asked us about our trip how much we enjoyed it. All pros and no cons!!! Barbados has to be the friendliest place my husband I have ever been to. The people are welcoming and always willing to help you. We will be back as soon as possible!!

Room Tip: ask for second or third floor for better ocean views

A beautifully appointed modern hotel right on the beach. The sound of the waves and the gentle breeze were delightful. We had a suite with a balcony, lounge, dining area, well-equipped kitchen, large bathroom with shower and a comfortable bedroom. The suite had two airconditioners. There is a poolside bar and a nice open pavilion dining room. The dining room had good Caribbean/European style cuisine. The beach has all facilities with lounge chairs and parasols. A great hotel for families or singles.

Room Tip: Ask for a suite on the top floor. It will be cooler and have a better view.

This hotel was excellent, the complex was self catering as we wanted to plan our own meals, the accommodation and the sea views from the balcony were first class and the rooms very sacious and air conditioned. There were 2 restaurants if you decided to eat at the hotel and the beach was 30 seconds from my front door. The staff were very friendly and I would highly recommend this to all age groups but mainly from age group 25 and upwards and families .

Room Tip: ak for a beach and sea view room when booking

If you want a relaxed and laid back friendly resort, where there are always enough sun loungers, where the beach is literally seconds from the pools, and where hotel staff make you feel welcome and as though your daft questions are not daft at all, then you should try The Bougainvillea. If you want 5 star luxury this isn't for you but this place is right on a beautiful beach, and for couples with kids, what it lacks in high end luxury it more than makes up for in atmosphere, views to die for from the beach just moments from your room and staff who make your kids feel at home.
We stayed in a one bedroomed deluxe suite on the ground floor, overlooking gardens, pools and the ocean (once you stepped to the edge of the very large patio area). The rooms were all light, bright and airy, with nice neutral and fresh decor. We asked for a super king bed rather than 2 queen beds and this was enormous. The linens were good quality as were the furnishings. The kitchen area was great - although the enormous fridge was very loud at times -but with a decent cooker (not that we cooked). kettle, toaster, microwave etc. It makes life so much easier with kids being able to prepare breakfasts and some lunches as well as being able to store cold drinks easily. It felt like we had all the services of a hotel, but with a really good self catering apartment. The bed settee in the living room which our son slept on was fine for kids - not sure how adults would cope though. The large bedroom was at the back of the "apartment" away from any evening noise so our son started out there and we carried him into the living room to his bed when we went to bed. The sitting room was large and had a table and chairs for dining as well as table and chairs on the patio.
Reception and activities desk staff were very helpful and friendly. Babysitting was easy to organise and the one night we used it, we had a lovely girl come to look after Finlay. She was really friendly and I felt we could trust her immediately. Our son attedned the kids club for one day and they did craft (made Valentines cards for Mummy and daddy), played in the outdoor playground as well as the games room and had pool time. They also had lunch in the restaurant that only opens at dinner and called it "their cafe". Fin enjoyed his day.
Although a bit on the loud side, the evening entertainment (a few times a week) was of high quality and family friendly.
The pool bar was great for grabbing a beer, cocktail or soft drink - they also have ice creams and milk shakes for the kids and you can also order from the lunch menu of the Lanterns restaurant until about 9pm if you want to eat early and without the formality of the restaurant.
The watersports kiosk on the beach always ensured you had a lounger, sun umbrella and towels as well as free life jackets, boogie boards, snorkels and mask etc and were happy to arrange more watersports from the hotel beach as well as other boat trips.
The hotel shop was well stocked with souvenirs but also essentials like suncream, a few snacks and emergency toiletries etc.
There are some great places to eat within a 10mins cab ride and a couple within walking distance, but we tended to head to St Lawrence Gap for early dinners with our son - there are a few good places there and others out towards Oistins.

We would seriously consider going back to this resort and if they can sort out a few negatives, we will. The guest services manager was very receptive to our constructive comments and they are well aware they need to do something about the restaurant.

Negatives
- the evening entertainment next to the main restaurant could be very loud at times. As we had a large apartment with a back bedroom we could minimise the problem for our son, but it was a little intrusive (although always over by about 10pm)
- The main restaurant, Lanterns was very hit and miss while we were there. We found the service slow and erratic and the food average to poor (though we accept we are a little about good food). We feel that the place is really letting the resort down. We received slow and careless service, poor quality food, missed orders, late and over cooked room service (& it was only pizza) and a very average beach buffet night which although we booked, they didn't have a note of our booking and almost turned us away (at 7.15pm with a small child). The buffet served up over cooked veg and meat (compared to our almost raw veg on another evening) and just awful catering pack style desserts.
The kids outdoor play area is ok but a little tired and not great for over 4/5's
The indoor kids room is also really for little ones and looking a little over used too - however the Challenger Games room makes up for this with pool, air hockey, table football.
The tree frogs are noisy - but that's nature for you!
The sea is too rough here for swimming for young kids most of the time, but the pools and jumping in the waves made up for it.
Having said all of this - this is a lovely place and it was so easy to be there. Our week flew by and none of us wanted to go home!

My husband and I decided to split our time on the island between the Bougainvillea and the Hilton Barbados. (I'll be writing a review on the HIlton shortly.) This is a fantastic hotel! As others have mentioned, the staff are very friendly and eager to assist, the pool and grounds are well cared for and the beach is beautiful. Our room was exactly as it appeared on the web site. There was a free grocery shuttle the morning after we arrived which we really appreciated as I was able to stock up on breakfast items and snacks. (I think this is only offered one day a week.) Also, they have washers and dryers you can use (you need to get tokens from the front desk - cost was minimal) if you want to pack lightly. The surf is rough and probably not ideal for small children, but for adults and older children it's not that bad. Our only complaint was the slow service in the restaurant. Overall, however, our experience was great. I would highly recommend this hotel!

Room Tip: Higher floors offer better chance of an ocean view.
