Sitting at the Airport waiting for our flight back to the Uk which is delayed , so I thought I would write a quick review of our lunch time visit to Sandy Lane today.

What they do , they do very well, but you can end up so stuffed you cannot move easily.

From boiled shrimps, king Crab, oysters, prawns and clams for a first plate. Followed by assorted sushi.

Then roast beef, suckling pig, stuffing, various sides.
Then a bit more roast beef and just a bit more suckling pig with crackling and Some Mac and cheese.

Then some vanilla and chocolate ice cream, a proffiteroll and a bit of cheesecake.

All washed down with a bottle of Mersault.

Cost 860.00 Barbados dollars mind you the wine was 280.00

Opinion. Luxurious treat.

Choice of sitting inside on patio or terrace, all lovely. Service was personal as used our first names, staff were lovely.
I enjoyed the food, it was good but not exceptional. The gazpacho wasn't to my liking and we wanted mussels but they didn't have any left.

We were not staying here but have heard a lot about the place, so we made a reservation for lunch since we were told it was the only way they would let us through the gated entrance. We were looking forward to a nice lunch in this upscale place. we are season travelers used to high end, expensive places around the world.
We had a reservation for luch and arrived a little earlier thinking that we would have a drink at the bar and maybe take a look at the place. This is not unlike many places around the world that we have visited without staying in it. Well we were wrong, upon arrival we were greeted at the front door of the hotel by a "hostess" who asked us "how can I help you?" although in order to get access to the property we had to give our name to the gate keeper who had a list of reservations for lunch.
Once we were in the lobby, this lady told us that she needed to escort us down one floor to the restaurant where we had the reservation. We asked why we could not jut go down and she said that "the policy is that all non-guests need to be escorted". We felt like "guilty" until proven innocent. Once we got downstairs to the dinning room facing the ocean, which by the way was empty, we asked our "minder" if we could sit outside and she informed us that she was not sure and that she did have to check with the maitre D'. We thought it was odd since they were plenty of empty tables outdoors but thought OK. Since we are at least 25 minutes early for our reservation at 1:00 pm, we said to our "minder" the the we would like to have a drink at the bar, where all the stools were empty at this time, she told us that the bar stools were only available for registered guest. We thought this was absurd. When we complained she said that there were rules to "protect the registered guest". Although they did not mind taking our money for lunch. She showed us to a secluded area with a couch and chairs where we were "allowed" to have drinks as non-registered guest. To make a long story short, we were so turned off by their "rules" and the escorting that we decided to forgo lunch at Sandy Lane and decided to leave.
We went back to the lobby and asked our "minder" that we needed a taxi back to go back to downtown Bridgetown, she motioned to one of the hotel taxis parks din font of the lobby and when we asked how much it would be she said it would be US$35 to go back to downtown. This was odd since we just took a taxi from the same place downtown to the Sandy Lane and we only paid US$25. When we questioned why the US$10 difference she said that that was their price for their "special" taxis. We pressed her and asked for a regular taxi and she was visually upset, but finally went over to the bell captain and he called a regular taxi that came to pick us up and we paid the same going rare of US$25.
Morale of the story stay away from Sandy Lane unless you want to throw away your money or if you have so much money that you don't care how you expend it.
The regular taxi driver that came to take us downtown said that he had heard that the place was own by a couple of billionaires that did not care about making money and just wanted to run the place their way. He also said that the place was lifeless.

This was our third visit to Bajan Blue. It's become a must have when we are in Barbados.

This time we opted for the mid-week Caribbean buffet.

The restaurant is lovely and the staff do everything to make your dining experience a good one. Our sommelier, Roger, was good fun and his friendly banter was a tonic.

We did enjoy the food but have to say that we prefer the Sunday lunch buffet.
