Just returned from a 3 month business trip and stayed in "The Rock", about a mile from Blackwood. Wonderful owners and staff. Very comprehensive help-yourself continental breakfasts, good, "honest", home cooked food from a comprehensive menu. (Try the great pepper sauce with the rib-eye, Caribbean chicken or the bread and butter pudding.) Excellent local and "guest" beers. (But) perhaps best of all...being made to feel part of the extended family from minute one.
An all round good old-fashion "pub with accommodation" with no screaming children running around the dining room or bar causing havoc.
Guests were welcome to make sandwiches for lunch the next day or order a larger picnic with all the trimmings the night before. If I got in late, there was always a hot meal and a cold beer waiting.
Don't expect yards of glass, highly polished stainless steel and up-to-your ankles shag-pile - IT'S AN OLD PUB - but it's clean and tidy with the attention to detail in catering for the many and varied needs of the guests, surpassing most "5 stars". (Need your phone charging, run out of toothpaste, forgotten your razor, or need a tablet post over-indulgence - it all available.)
On food, they do not cater for those with food intolerances or allergies, but you want something that's not on the menu, or want something excluded, the chefs are always up for it.
Room are not huge, but the beds are big and comfortable. There's (remarkably fast) free wi-fi with access to a standalone computer and printer if required.
So, unreservedly recommended for the long or short term guest. It's home from home.
(Cracking local walks with stunning valley views. 24 hour supermarket and other services about a mile away. )
