Highly recommend a stay at the Sanctuary, great staff and very clean, the swim up bar is great and highly recommend having an Island girl cocktail and the sister resort the Rarotongian is a great place to dine while watching the fish from the deck.

Room Tip: We had a room upstairs beach front, and were watching whales from our our deck.

Staff were lovely - location excellent - food delicious - room cleaning could improve - excellent massage. Enjoyed all my excursions - Edgewater dinner and feast - Te Vara Nui spectacular - Progressive dinner - Island discovery tour - Lagoon cruise. TIP - island bus 10 rides for NZ$30.00 great value!

Room Tip: Sunday cleaning is LIGHT! Suggest saving NZ$15.00/day by opting for 'light' cleaning some days.

Kia Orana Pamela,
Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay with us at the Sanctuary Resort.
We are thrilled that you had such an enjoyable time whilst here in Rarotonga and that you enjoyed our prime location directly on Aroa Lagoon Marine Sanctuary on the south-west side of the Island with beautiful beaches, stunning sunsets and abundant tropical fish. We provide complimentary use of kayaks, paddle boards, snorkels & masks, etc for guests to explore the lagoon.

The resort has a Duty Manager available from 7am-10pm who would have been more than happy to address any issues during your stay, and I would have also welcomed the opportunity to meet with you personally. Please feel free to contact me directly if you wish to share more detailed feedback.

I found the staff to be excellent and they could not do enough for you. I loved my room and the activities I partook in. The food prices in the resort was a little expensive. I would of liked more local food choices, too many typical western foods like pizzas and burgers. 4.5 stars and a wonderful place for a break.

Kia Orana Terina,
Thank you for your kind review.
I am delighted to hear such wonderful feedback regarding our helpful staff, and that you enjoyed the activities and your room.
Our Island-fusion menu includes a lot of local fruits, vegetables and seafood, flavours and cuisine such as pawpaw salsa, spiced coconut cream, coconut sambal and rukau island spinach in most of our dishes, including Coconut Noodle Salad, Island Fries as well as a range of local seafood such as the iconic ‘Ika Mata’, marinated gamefish salad and ‘Mitiore’ (prawns in fresh coconut) in our seafood platter.
Our meals and drink prices are in line with what you pay at other similar outlets around the island, which are more like Australia and New Zealand than Bali or Thailand, and cheaper than Fiji. Please note that as we are a small tropical island in the middle of the South Pacific, apart from some locally grown fruit and vegetables, we need to import many items.
Our menus are designed to appeal to as broad a range of guests as possible including guests with special dietary needs such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, dairy and nut free, etc.
Captain Andy’s Beach Bar & Grill at The Rarotongan offers casual beach and poolside dining including light and tasty snacks, salads, pizzas, burgers & sandwiches, and a range of main courses, as well as daily Chef’s specials and a Kids’ Menu especially for our little guests.
Wishing you all the best for 2018.

We stayed at the Sanctuary Resort, part of the wider Rarotonga on the Beach Resort, for a week recently. This resort isrestricted to adults (no families with children - they are welcome and catered to by the Rarotonga on the beach).

We stayed in an upstairs room with balcony overlooking the central beach area and sea views. The rooms are pleasant with all the basic amenities. The bathroom is separate and is clean and tidy.

We had a short covered walk to the restaurant/office area, swimming pool, tennis court and to the beach area.

The office holds a range of sports equipment from paddles for boarding, snorkels, flippers, reef shoes & tennis rackets. At the beach were the paddle boards, surf kayaks and sun loungers. All included in the price and generally available. We did find some people booked out equipment early in the morning and didn't return it until late in the afternoon, but it was just left lying at the beach - slightly frustrating but not sufficient to stop you doing something else.

Breakfast is a range of fresh fruit, cereal, pikelets and toast with tea and coffee (included with our room). For an additional cost you could extend to a cooked breakfast. The fresh fruit had local and imported fruit but all was delicious and a great start to the day. We generally had lunch out and for two nights ate at the Sanctuary.

The Sanctuary shares a kitchen with the Rarotonga on the Beach. A general menu is replaced by a 'couples' or 'share plate' menu at 6pm. While nice it didn't suit what we were looking for so we ate at a range of great restaurants dotted up and down the coast.

The staff were friendly, happy to offer advice and a pleasure to interact with. In particular Moana serviced our room and really fun to interact with. She did a great job and always had a smile. Praveen at the the bar was shy to talk to but very efficient in managing the bar, taking and delivering food orders. I noticed he managed a lot on his own and when he wasn't on duty there were usually two others covering. Bruce in security was a great font of knowledge, friendly and enthusiastic. The right man for his role (I believe he is also a manager there but very accessible).

There were a lot of newly married, about to be married or couples looking for a romantic holiday. This is a good spot for all of the above.

A good place to stay.

Kia Orana,
Thank you for your review.
I am delighted to hear you enjoyed your stay at our adults-only resort, and found our staff a pleasure to interact. I will pass your compliments on to Moana, Praveen and Bruce and I know they will be delighted to hear of the wonderful impact they had on your stay.
It is lovely to hear you enjoyed the complimentary continental tropical buffet which includes seasonal fresh island fruits, fresh fruit salad, home-stewed fruits, Bircher muesli, homemade yoghurt, fresh-baked breads, pastries, muffins & croissants, cereals, toast, spreads, fruit juices, tea & coffee. Other hot breakfast options are available from our a la carte menu for a small additional charge. An all-day menu is available for guests to dine pool-side and guests of Sanctuary are also welcome to dine next door at Captain Andy’s Bar & Grill.
We look forward to welcoming you back to Sanctuary Rarotonga. Please feel free to contact me directly to ensure that you are accessing the best available returnee guest packages.

A very relaxed atmosphere is everywhere at The Rarotongan (Sanctuary).
All the Sanctuary rooms seemed to have a great view over the lagoon. We were on level 1 which was more private and a better view.
Rooms were great. Clean and tidy, with everything you need...spot on!
Staff were great to deal with.
We were there with a group of friends and had a great time.
Sanctuary restaurant was quiet (R18), if you ant a bit more family noise just go next door to the other restaurant.
I would thoroughly recommend The Sanctuary (rooms have a much better view than the cheaper Rarotongan rooms)

Room Tip: Level 1 rooms at the sanctuary have the best rooms and are quite private.
