1863 Bar Bistro Rooms
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 17 July 2017

We stayed here for two nights as part of a weekend break in mid July. we were met on arrival by a member of staff who was very pleasant and helpful and showed us to our room. The room was spotlessly clean and well furnished and the bathroom excellent. The breakfast menu was very good and the chef kind enough to deviate slightly from the menu to accomadate my wife. The dining area is very well furnished and looks out onto a lovely garden. Unfortunately we had planned to eat elswhere so did not get the chance to have dinner but on both nights when we returned the bistro was busy. We did however have a chance to have a drink at the bar and once again the staff were pleasant and friendly. We would strongly recommend 1863 as a place to stay and if ever we are back in the area we will be staying here.

Room Tip: Our room overlooked the road but was still very quiet.

Needed somewhere for one night as a stop-off on a long journey. Left wishing we had had longer to spend at this lovely small hotel. The food was excellent - delicious local produce beautifully prepared. The room was pretty and had everything we needed. Spotlessly clean. Want to make a special mention for the owners. Friendly and eager to please - they have completely the right attitude to make guests feel special and pampered. It was in an ideal location to explore Ullswater with lots of walks both along the lake, into the countryside and up mountains. We were very impressed with the whole place and have now put it on our "must go again" list.

Room Tip: Had a tour of other rooms - they were all individual and all top quality furniture, decoration and f...

We stayed here with our daughter en route to Scotland at the end of June and were so glad that we did. I had read the reviews and can only say that I completely agree with them. We were warmly welcomed by Nuno and shown to our rooms which were both really comfortable and had everything we needed.

Dinner was spectacular. From the bread to start until the dessert it was inventive and delicious. We easily managed all three courses and were full but not over stuffed! We each had different dishes and without fail they were all extremely good. I think that whatever you choose you would not be disappointed. In fact the food really spoiled us for our trip to Glasgow. We went to some great restaurants there but they didn't really compare and we kept thinking back to that dinner!

Breakfast was delicious too and set us up for the day ahead.

So I would thoroughly recommend this lovely place. The staff and owners were unfailingly friendly and welcoming and it is absolutely a cut above any normal hotel. It is not too far from the M6 so makes a great stopover but is a destination in its own right too. We will definitely be back next time we are heading up north.

A lovely, relaxed restaurant. Food is very high quality and well priced with good use for local ingredients. It was nice to see a reasonably priced wine list too. Will be sure to come back next time we are in Pooley Bridge.

Ate here for the second time on Saturday, and wasn't disappointed, the food was fantastic, sampled hogget for the first time, my wife who doesn't eat rare meat had a beef fillet which was rare!! and ate it all, this demonstrates just how good the food is.
The atmosphere is great and service excellent,, the bar is great for a quiet drink in the afternoon with a couple of well kept beers, on draught.
I would highly recommend the 1863 for a drink or meal if you're in Pooley.
