What a treat! We stumbled upon this gite to extend our family holiday on our return from the Gironde. It was everything and more than we expected...Garden House is a wonderfully spacious, well equipped gite with everything you would need for a simple relaxed family holiday. Situated 4km outside of Segre in a very quiet village, the gite could be overlooked as it sits behind a large, well maintained hedge, giving the property almost total privacy yet allowing the sunshine to bathe you throughout the day! The gite is nestled in amongst large mature trees with its own sweeping driveway, gardens and patio furniture. The grounds are very private and secure (loved this aspect as our girls were able to roam freely within the large gardens both front and back...munching on the ripe pears and apples found in the orchard area to the rear of the property!). The gite itself was very clean, tidy and practical for all our family needs and the holiday got off to a great start with the helpful and detailed 'arrival welcome' from Andre and his wife...the bottle of locally produced wine certainly was appreciated!
Our host (owner Francois Mace) and the welcome we received from Andre and his wife was exceptional, we had a phone call to check the property was okay and we had everything we needed, whilst Andre popped in after a day or so just to ensure we'd found everything and settled in okay...we also got invited on a boat trip to Chateau Gontier! So lovely and helpful.
It is a great location...the close proximity to walks and cycles directly from your doorstep enabled us to have a great family week - walking into Segre along the river (18 brightly coloured kingfishers spotted one day!)for a long French lunch, cycling to the nearby Chateau, walking along the forest track and into the Marie's garden/ viewing point and relaxing around the gite - sheer bliss.
Excited!!! We also visited Chambellay, 10 minute drive from the gite, a small village situated on the Mayenne river which at first glance doesn't appear that special...however, alongside the river is an amazing footpath which takes you all the way to Chateau Gontier (if you were feeling adventurous...then onto Laval!!) - we walked and cycled the path on a couple of days as the scenery was so spectacular and the path was so practical - wide enough to fit two cyclists side by side and our little 5yr old, still on her bike with stabilisers completed 21km one day as there were so many wildlife treats to for them to observe...also Menil has a great little park and ice-cream parlour (serves meals and ice cold beers!).
There is plenty to do within the locality of this gite which makes it such a great base to tour from but also after a day out visiting Chateau's and the like, it felt really good to come home to!
We will certainly be bookmarking this gite for future holidays as we have only just discovered a small part of what this region has to offer - absolutely brilliant holiday!
