Food was ok, service is excellent. It is a welcome place for hikers. Can even grab a beer or a glass of wine from a box. All hauled down by mule. Makes it special even though the food is very mediocre.

After a very long day of hiking, we were excited to get to Phantom Ranch Lodge, have some time to relax and refresh ourselves, and then come to Phantom Ranch Canteen for a nice steak dinner.
You should plan in advance if you want steak. Other options are meat chili and vegetarian stew. All of these things sell out well in advance, so check out the Xanterra website and call the right number to book ahead. You will be assigned a dinner time and you should take care to be there on time.
After they confirm your prepaid reservation you go to a large table and find a seat. We were served family-style; steaks come out on a stack on a big plate that you pass around the table, same with salad, potatoes and some steamed greens. Do not expect your steak to be made to order for you (rare, medium, well). Iced tea and water are on the table, coffee is served at the end. If you want wine or beer, you go to the bar and pay extra. It was nice to not have to worry about cooking or clean-up after our long hike, so I'd say it was worth it.

Very difficult to get reservations for this place. But well worth the wait. Not fancy but a great place to hike to and spend a night or two. Staff does a great job of making you welcome. We stayed in the bunkhouses. Very comfortable. Staff served good meals and were very efficient. Very accommodating and welcoming staff.

It is a pleasant sight to see Phantom Ranch while you're hiking. The opportunity to sit down and have a short break with snacks is nice.
Knowing the mules hike in the supplies, it should be obvious that choices are limited.
M&Ms, granola bars, and lemonade are the main options. Powdered sports-type drink is also available for purchase.
Prices are high but are understandable since the mules must transport everything.

Quaint place to stop and grab a refreshing lemonade. Keep in mind you pack out what you bring in. Good place to relax for a while. I did not stay here but camped near by (1/2 mile). I understand you can order a steak dinner. We did not, but stopped in for some lunch and cold drinks.
