Owner description: One of the two superhighways into the Canyon, the other being the Bright Angel Trail, this path runs along a ridge offering stunning views. During the summer, visitors are advised to bring at least two quarts of water along because it can get very hot and the trail offers no shade.

Rougher trail than Bright Angel. Several very steep areas. No water on this trail. Very little protection from the sun. Be sure to stay hydrated and carry salty snacks.

My family of four hiked down the South Kaibab to Cedar Ridge in the course of half a day--if you take some food and water and take it easy on the way up it should be no problem. We went with a guide from the Grand Canyon Field Institute who was fantastic--without him we might not have stopped to enjoy some breathtaking views and learn about the canyon.

Stayed overnight to meet up with a hike into the Canyon. Facilites good, room comfy, free shuttle bus great, and staff very friendly and helpful. Had a delicious meal at the Bright Angel lodge- soups were awesome and fajitas big enough to share between 2.

A fantastic trail: right into the canyon, great views and great picnic spot at the 2nd stopping area (the 1st is too crowded): can be very arduous on way back up due to altitude and steepness: the rim is at 7000 ft above sea level!

This a great hike, but not for beginners. We had snow and ice on the top 1 mile, and then sunny with muddy sections for the next 2 miles due the the snow melting. There is no water available AT ALL, so you must bring all you will need for your entire hike.
Since we are experienced hikers, and this was our main goal at the Grand Canyon for this trip, we arrived with micro-spikes for our hiking boots, poles, and winter gear, full packs with food and water. We saw others on the trail in gym shoes, slipping and sliding, and falling down! Others only had a small water bottle. IMHO hiking a stenuous trail like this, so unprepared, is dangerous!
The views on this trail are AMAZING beyond words. We took 2+ hours down to the 3-mile mark, Skeleton point, where we sat and had lunch. Then it took around 3 hours to hike back up. We stopped often to take photos and enjoy the views, as well as let the horseback groups pass.
All in all, this was one of the most amazing hikes we have ever done and we can't wait to go back!!!
