“Beautiful lovation, spacious chalet.”

Our family stayed the night in the Chalet while on a road trip through the NW. We visited Crater Lake that day and arrived late at the Chalet. It was about an hour drive from the lake. We had no problem getting in even though it was dark. The Chalet was spacious, and none of the concerns of the last reviewer about bugs. My teenaged boys were disappointed that there was no WiFi or cable. We contented ourselves by watching old movies provided by owner, although we could not figure our how to get VHS working. The kitchen and bathrooms were updated nicely and the place was very clean. The bed in the master bedroom was comfortable! The owner was very gracious in accommodating two requests from us and her hospitality was very appreciated. The next morning, we were able to see the beautiful location this property is on and took a nice walk along the lake before we left for our next adventure.

“overall was nice but a few too many bugs in the house.”

They could use a better bug control approach, a few newer kitchen pans, and a better sweeper. We are not required to clean however, when you have a crawling infant you tend to clean a little more. The sweeper they had on site did not pick up. But those were my only complaints. Overall, it was a very nice place for a good price

“Not great--not poor, but not average. 2.5 if such a rating were available.”

The Chalet is not bad, but there are some issues that I wish I had known about before I traveled there. Not all of these are issues with the property itself, but I believe it is still useful to know about them, since the address of the property is not available until you book it. For the reasons I list below, i would not stay there again--others might not be bothered by these problems, but I still think it is important to be informed ahead of time!

Issues with the location:

1. Property is a good 45 minute drive (as long as an hour if you're north of Crater Lake) from the park. Not necessarily an issue for some people probably, but if you aren't traveling with an animal, I would highly recommend staying *within* the park instead if you are hiking there, etc., as we were. "Near" Crater Lake, as indicated on the property advertisement, is only loosely true (there isn't much around there, really, but still).

2. Property is kind of in the middle of nowhere. (Of course so is Crater Lake, but nevertheless it'd be better to stay in the park, imo.) Agency Lake is a *wetland*, and as a result, there were thousands (I kid you not) of bugs. This will obviously not be a problem for some people, but it really is for me. We drove in at dusk, and there were so many bugs hurtling towards the car that *it looked like it was snowing.* Again, probably not a big deal for some, but I would never stay in a place like this on purpose! Had it been advertised as a wetland, I would have avoided it. Again, this is just an issue with the location, but for those who are, like me, on the side of bug phobic, avoid. Not fun.

Issues with property:

1. Screens in windows of property had holes. One screen in living area had a large hole (screen is bent in one corner); screen in upstairs master bedroom had many smaller holes through which bugs had easy ingress. House was *really* hot and uncomfortable with windows closed; but windows in these areas could not be opened unless you wanted the thousands of bugs in the house, as we discovered when we opened the downstairs window and bugs began to make themselves at home. Broken screens wouldn't be a concern were it not for the location (the house really is just a walk from the lake/wetland); as it is, with all of the bugs, I would expect the owners to be more aware of upkeep, both checking and fixing the screens so that guests would be comfortable. There is no air conditioning--to be completely expected in this part of the country, as the nights are nice enough that you really don't need it--but that being the case, you really need to be able to open the windows.

2. Advertises that it sleeps 6 people--I really don't see how, unless someone slept on couch. There are not exactly three bedrooms: there are two bedrooms upstairs, one with two tiny beds (I am not sure they are single beds but rather twin, or whichever one of those is smaller), and one with a king-sized bed. I am a small person as is my husband; our other friend is 6'5" and could not fit on the small beds. He took the master room (no problem) but then couldn't sleep because of heat (because of broken screen in that room). The ceiling fan in the room with two beds was so loud that it inhibited our sleep--again, not such a big deal if it were just a family vacation house, but when it is a rental (see more on price below), this kind of thing should be fixed. The bedroom downstairs isn't really a bedroom: no door, and a small futon that folds out and isn't very long. My husband and I wouldn't have been comfortable, and as I said, we are small people. (For reference, I am 5'2" and 115 pounds. This bed would have been ok for *just* me.) The description of the property makes it seem as though three *couples* could travel to the property, and I just don't see how this would be possible. I'm not saying that the owners misrepresent their property deliberately, but I do think they should be much more clear about what it offers: a place that could sleep a *family* of five, but *not* a place that would accommodate 6 *adults*.

3. Family pictures are hanging everywhere. This might not bother some people, but from my perspective--and I travel a lot--this is weird. If you are renting out your home, then you need to make it a rental. It felt instead like we were sleeping in their kids' or grandkids' beds (my husband and I in the little beds, I mean). That is just odd. Take that stuff down when other people are renting, and then put it back up again when you're there. I've stayed in plenty of vacation rentals owned by individuals/families before, and I have never seen something like this. All three of us were made uncomfortable by it. If you need the home to be just a family home, then I don't think it should be rented out to strangers in the first place.

4. The price. With tax, this place was $178/night. When I booked it, that seemed reasonable--having stayed there, no way. We have stayed at beautiful places on the coast, *in the summer* (i.e. expensive season) for less than that. If the screens were fixed and it really did accommodate as many people as it says--comfortably--then maybe I would feel as though $150 inclusive of tax were reasonable. As it is, it seems as though these prices are set at random; many properties in the area are owned by the same people, and it seems as though they simply choose their own price point.

As is probably clear, I would never stay at this place again. The owners were friendly and easy to deal with, so that is a plus, but the issues in the cabin made our night there uncomfortable, which is not great when you've been hiking for 10 hours and want a good night's sleep. I would not recommend this property to anyone.

We loved the chalet. It was quaint, charming and beautifully located. Our kids and puppy enjoyed the location and it was a great way to see Crate lake with a pet in tow.
