A Hotel that rates well in all points, but it would be better with a newer decoration.
Liked: friendly staff, location
Disliked: a little bit old Hotel.

Stayed at this property for 4 nights in April 09 in an Executive Club room. Overall, would rate is hotel as an excellent Shangri-la property but not a 5 star property. Our room (and the rest of the hotel rooms) have recently been updated and have a sleek, clean feel about them. However, the layout is a little odd and not necessarily good use of space. While the rooms are suppose to be 58 m2, it does not feel like a large room. Room feels small and under-whelming. Plus, storage space was not well thought out. The bathroom design is good, but the shower area could have been used more effectively.
Staff service is at a 4-star level. So it was good but lacking those small yet memorable touches that the Mandarin, Peninsula or Four Seasons staff seem to have.
The Club access is ok - good food and drink options, but not a very big area. When it is half full, the noise level is high and it feels like others are 'in your face'.
Pool and gym were ok - pool is on roof and great views; but the pool is not good for laps. Only for playing.
Restaurants were good, and are also very popular with the locals - again, noise levels can be high when they are crowded.
Airport hotel pick up is good and if you leave early in the morning, they have sandwiches, coffee and sweets in the car waiting for you. A very nice touch.
Overall, good property. As for location, there isn't really am ideal location in Taipei - this one is as good as any other.

We stayed at the Shangri-La for the first night we were in Taipei and we stayed in a deluxe room. The rooms were very beautiful and large, the bathroom was very roomy with marble floor and both a shower and a bath. Overall the rooms were amazingly clean. We went to Kaohsiung for a week after the first day in Taipei and then returned to Shangri-la after that. There was a small complication with the people at the front desk. We booked a deluxe room in the horizon club this time for 10 days and one of the policies is that the room in the horizon club is reserved for you regardless of when you come, but when we got there in the evening, the staff booked us into a smaller room on the fifteen's floor (not on the horizon club levels) and tried to pass it as if it was. We talked to the manager at that point because we were angry and a little tired. The manager was really nice, she apologized for their mistake of double booking our room and offered us a free night stay along with a free dinner and also a free limo ride the next day. She also ensured us that we will be moving to a larger room the next day.
Overall the experience there was great! As part of the horizon club, we also got complimentary breakfast and afternoon tea as well as evening snacks/wine in the lounge. There is breakfast both in the club lounge as well as downstairs in the restaurant, the restaurant had a much better selection of food (buffet) ranging from fish of the day to fried rice/dim sum to breakfast buns to fresh fruits (and yes, all offered in the morning for breakfast).

I just returned from my stay in Taipei - I hadn't been back to the the city for over 20 years, and had a marvelous time, in part thanks to staying at this hotel. Located in what used to be the far edge of town, it is very convenient to the newer, trendy areas in the west of Taipei. The hotel is very well run - it compares favorably with the best hotels of Paris. The staff spoke flawless English, the rooms were spacious and beautifully appointed, and a sense of graciousness was pervasive. A plus too is the multilevel mall next door, with excellent dining spots and first class shopping. The rooftop pool is a must, as is the spa and massage therapy.

I have been staying at the Far Eastern Plaza Hotel since it opened over a decade ago, and I still rate it one of the best hotels in Taipei. From the moment you step in, there are many people at the reception desk that are ready to assist you check in to the hotel. I hadn't been there for about 5 years, but I still recognized one of the staff there (now the front desk manager, I believe), so there is a lot of continuity that helps with service quality.

One then proceeds to the elevator foyer, a circular space that is always impressive, not least because of the magnificent floral displays on a pedestal at its center.

The rooms as always are lovely, immaculately clean and with wonderful, comfortable beds and some local seasonal fruits waiting for you. The bathroom is generously sized, and while the dark marble speaks of 90s design it was planned with a lot of forethought and is still very user-friendly and comfortable. I noted that the little mini-CRT TVs in the bathroom had been replaced with flat-panel screens. The internet worked beautifully on both a wired and Wi-Fi basis.

The gym is terrific, with TV consoles on many of the machines, and earphones, towels and bottled water. I did not go to the pool on the top deck this time, but would recommend it for first-time visitors.

The cafe, in my view, still serves one of the best breakfast buffets in Asia. They have a full and impressive range of Western dishes, omelette stations and even Japanese dishes, but what has always impressed me is the congee bar with its many delectable side dishes. It also has soy bean milk, which you can accompany with spring onion pancake, you tiao or zhua bing, which saves me the trouble of going to seek out these delicious street food items in the neighborhood nearby. The fresh juices are also wonderful.

Speaking of streets, the hotel is also located in one of the coolest neighborhoods in Taipei. In every direction, there are plenty of cozy little restaurants, cafes and bars to cater to everyone's taste. I highly recommend it to visitors both on business and for leisure travel.
