My mom and I had not visited sun moon lake since 40+ years ago. We stayed at Lalu with a lake view room for a night this month. The driver at the hotel picked us up around 3:pm from the bus station. The reception area furniture was old and really needed to be replaced. We loved the beautiful lake view and fresh orchids from the spacious hotel room, the 1.5 km serene walking trail by the hotel, and the friendly swimming pool attendant. However, the set dinner at the Chinese restaurant was mediocre~The temperature of the hot dishes was luke warm and the desserts were salty rather than sweet. The fresh fruit at the breakfast buffet was not very fresh. Overall, the staff was not very energized (We did not use the spa facility). Don’t get me wrong. I don’t mean that the service was bad but half of the staff is not carrying a smile. The equipment at the gym was limited. This is a beautiful hotel. To charge $500+ per night, I think the common area of the hotel needs to be renovated. Since my mom likes hot spring we had to stay at a different hotel which also near Sun Moon Lake.

The scenery is stunning and my last night stayed at another hotel so it's obvious. The staff is helpful and service is good.
But the Chinese restaurant is really... disappointing. Food is bad and atmosphere is like Hong Kong tea restaurant, unlike any good restaurant at 5 star hotel in a big city.
Please kindly reconsider when you going to book their package including dinner.

Dear Jamie Y:

Thank you for your review and compliments to our staff for services they provided.

The Management deeply regrets to hear that Chinese set dinner you had did not meet your expectation. Would you please give us more detail about it and write to ga@thelalu.com.tw . Therefore, we could have Chef made adjustment on the menu to made better taste and choice for guests. In your letter, you also mention the decoration of the restaurant; we are currently under planning phase of refurbishments, and will carry out in near future.

Thank you again for your feedback which gives us a chance to improve ourselves. We hope you may give us an opportunity to serve you again in the future.

The location including its views is one of the most beautiful ones I‘ve ever been to! The hotel‘s architecture and design are amazing and that includes the bedrooms’ designs. The wonderful GHM style (which was the former managing company) is definitely recognizable.

Sadly this place‘s best times are definitely gone by. Carpets in the lobby bar, wooden walls of the corridors, furniture of the continental restaurant etc. have been in need of replacement for quite some time, I guess.

Quality of service differs a lot: front desk, lobby bar and SPA team were very polite and attentive, tea house staff preferred to sit in front of the computer instead of offering drinks.

The hotel has a very beautiful pool, the massages were perfectly relaxing. We did not like the food at the international restaurant or at the lobby bar - the Chinese restaurant comes highly recommended, but it was fully booked the evening of our stay. All in all, the hotel is a beautiful place but not comparable to other international luxury hotels, that cost $500 per night (incl. breakfast for two).

Dear Elisabeth M:

Thank you for sharing your though with us.

In regarding the facilities, we are currently undergoing different stages of refurbishments, both exterior and interior.

For your dining experience at International restaurant and Lobby Bar, we have forwarded your comments to our F&B division for further action and we will definitely be focusing more on taste and quality of food.

Thank you again for your comments. We hope you may give us an opportunity to serve you again.

It’s one of the priciest hotels I’ve stayed at. But it was worth every cent. The view of the lake was spectacular and I believe every room overlooks the lake. There are also nice touches like you are served tea, nibbles, and a hot towel while you wait to be checked in

The room was spacious but the domination of wood panels and hardwood flooring may not be to the liking of everyone. The large balcony has a bed which offers a night’s sleep out in the open if you are tired of sleeping in an air-conned room. Pay attention to the briefing by the staff about finding all the switches and knobs and how to use them when they take you to the room because the controls are obscure and not evident. The hotel has access to a footpath by the lakeshore which joggers will love.

Room Tip: All rooms command a panoramic view of Sun Moon Lake. Level 7 (top floor) offers the best view.
