Rann Riders Safari Resort
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 10 April 2012

Rann Riders is an excellent place from which to do bird watching. On request, our enthusiastic
guide took us on excellent bird watching safaris. The first day bird watching was around waterways not too far from the resort where we saw thousands of migratory flocks of flamingos and three types of cranes (demoiselle - in their thousands, common -in their hundreds, and a handful of sarus cranes) as well as lots of other water and bush birds. On the second day we went to Little Rann Kutch, a remote white desert area, where only about eight species of birds were found in this harsh inhospitable landscape, but among them were some special species. The third day we spent even closer to the resort, where we say lots of other water and bush birds. In total, we saw about 75 species.

We also saw about 40 rare wild 'horses' (I cannot use the correct term as Trip Advisor thinks it's a profanity rather than the correct name for this animal!), blue bulls, antelopes and desert foxes.

Accommodation is in individual huts, complete with a large bathroom, a small area (perhaps a dressing room) in which to store suitcases and unpack, and an outdoor sitting area overlooking a pleasant garden area. As is often the case in India, the mattresses are very firm (hard). The bathroom was fine. There was a rat in the room which consumed the sugar from our tea and coffee making facilities but wasn't a problem (we didn't mention it to the management or owner) considering that the accommodation is in a fairly remote area, the bird watching was wonderful, it's one of the few places where you can stay to see the rare wild 'horse' (Rann Kutch is the only place in India where you'll see wild 'horses'), the guides were excellent, the food was tasty and plentiful, there is an open air covered lounge area off the dining area, and the gardens are attractive and well tended.

The owner is on site, friendly, approachable and attentive. The staff are excellent and offer assistance when they know your interests (e.g. a variety of well thumbed bird watching books for the subcontinent for loan).

I recommend Rann Riders as an excellent guided bird watching / naturalist site with tasty good quality food, excellent guides and staff, and good service.

My criterion for evaluating a wildlife resort are the following

1. Good wildlife in the vicinity and knowledgeable and communicative guides.
2. Clean rooms.
3. Good food.
4. A hassle free experience.

The resort worked very well on the first criterion. Little Rann of Kutch is a great place for birding and given its convenient location I hope to go there more often. Our driver / guide was very helpful and for my current state of understanding of wildlife, knowledgeable.

The food was also tasty. The menu is set but that's ok.Maybe they can think of making the lunches a bit lighter?

The problem was on criterion 2 and 4. The room I got was infested with mosquito. The first response of the staff was to deny that there were any mosquitoes. Then I was told that it was unusual and due to unseasonally warm days with cold nights. Be that as it may, it would have been nicer if they had given me the mosquito net on the first night not second. Or if the net did not have a palm sized hole that I had to patch with old newspaper.

There were many other similar small hassles. Hot water not coming through the shower or credit cards not accepted to name two. It is a pity. The owner seems a nice chap. I hope he spends a little time taking away these irritants. After all, as Jeffery Sacs tells us, a mosquito net costs only USD 2 and the resort does charges 50 times that every night.

Warm welcome with accommodation in bungalows clean and well kept. Landscaped gardens. Dinner and breakfast with good food and well prepared. Excellent tour with a visit to the pond and the beautiful village with guide proud of the surrounding nature. Superb flight of pink flamingos at sunset, I had to stay longer. I felt at home, although I was a tourist passing through.

We spent one night at the resort. The Sanctuary in Little Rann of Kutch is a different experience. For the room, food and safari provided, I would say it really needs improvement.
1. The rooms have good AC and the beds are clean. Though one is mentally prepared for tough surroundings, there needs to be basic things like doormats and mesh at the entrance door to keep out wasps and flying insects.
2. The bathrooms are clean with good toiletries, but hot water is a problem. They claim there is a central boiler, but we were not able to get hot water in the tap.
3. The food has limited fare, has to better for the money charged.
4. Evening tea was good but in the name of snacks some basic sandwiches were available on asking.
5. Expect only basic hospitality.
6. The safari needs improvement. The jeeps are new but there is no naturalist or guide to accompany. The driver we had basic awareness but not the information needed to satisfy curious nature lovers. Either the owner should reduce the money charged or make improvements.
We paid the same amount (~Rs 8000 for a couple+1 child) at Fern Gir for the same package but it was much much better in all these aspects. The pool was fantastic there and so was the food, room and safari.

Room Tip: Take the ones near the main courtyard with bigger area.
