Me and my friends visited Northen Hay in the month of Feb 11 and throughly enjoyed the stay. It offers excellent value for money and very good customer service.

Food - Simple yet very homely - you do not want an upset stomach when you are in jungle safari :)

Stay - very well renovated and gives you a retro feel. - all basic amenities are available and personally for absence of TV was a boon as its a theme holiday and gave a lot of time for us to gel with the nature afterall its a wildlife holiday so cant expect malls and theatres ! :P

Wildlife Safari - this is one of the best night safari's i have ever been, we were taken to the deep forest in the evening and we witnessed tuskars, tigers, wild bore and other regular wildlife - 2 hours of awesome adventure and and they had got focus lights and as photographer i was able to click some awesome pics. the guide had superb knowledge about the forest which for me was very important.

It attracts a lot of young couples especially for the isolated tree house - its always booked.

Overall - Great value for money and wonderful destination to destress. Me and my friends throughly enjoyed the stay and we are planning to visit Northern hay in june!!

A beautifully restored British Planters' Villa meticulously maintained and kept, right in the middle of deepest jungle you can imagine. The service is very good and so if the food. Ideal place for either family stay, adventure holiday or honeymoon. I cannot think of changing anything in this boutique Hotel.

We were taken on wildlife safari, and there was a nice camp fire and such activities. We were regularly visited by a troupe of monkeys who would come and beg for food.

Very reasonably priced for its quality.

A must for every nature lover to visit atleast once.

As the previous reviewer mentioned (which I agree with entirely), the place has a nice location, but that's about it. Even the location is a bit hemmed in. Compared to other masinagudi resorts, there is no expanse and it is a very in-your-face kinda jungle experience. We were there over the New Year's last year. We too were led to the mud house at first, but we made noise and the owner, over telephone, reallocated us. The owners were absent and it showed in the service. The boys tried their best. But there was no schedule, no plan in place and we had pretty unruly co-guests who kept the boys on their toes, making sure that no one else got much by way of service. There was a bonfire right in front of our room on the night of 31 and there was revelry and merrymaking till the wee hours. We are peaceful people and hence we tried to sleep through it all. But really, it wasn't fair. especially when we only got morning tea after 9, given that the staff had been serving this group till dawn, well, almost...
Lighting inside the rooms was bad. Not enough to read by at night. Housekeeping was shoddy and haphazard (one morning we were told the room cannot be cleaned till evening because the staff had been kept awake till dawn; we asked for a broom and a mop, truly intending to serve ourselves; but then they got scared and scurried about to clean the room ...).
I'd never go back. For all that we endured, the price was outrageously high.

Wilds Northern Hay isa resort located in the jungles of Masinagudi in the foothills of the Nilgiri mountain range. The location of the resort is perfect - the heart of the jungle in tusker territory, the cold weather of the Nilgiris - seems picture perfect. Well thats what we thought when we booked a night at this resort.

The resort is deep inside the forest and the roads are not motorable, they offer a pick up from Singa check post, where you can leave your vehicle. Our troubles though began with the check-in. We were due to check-in at 12, but reached late by 1 and surprisingly the previous party had not vacated the rooms and we had to wait till 2.

The rooms on the website looked attractive and indeed physically the rooms in the main building were real good. But unfortunately we were given a room outside the main building. Called as mudhouse, it truly seemed like hurriedly made of mud. Dark as a dungeon with poor lighting and the bed well - it was rock. A stone slab has been converted into a bed with a mattress on top. If you get down fast from the bed, you can hit your leg on the stone and it really hurts like bad.

Lunch was not ready even by 2 and the dining area is a small room. Lunch was pretty ok. Even dinner and breakfast was decent, but not much variety.

Our second session of trouble started after lunch, it started raining cats and dogs. Of course, it is not the resort's fault, but surely in a forest area rain is expected. So what does a guest do when it rains - no TV, no indoor games - absolutely nothing to do. And at night, power failures and genset troubles ensured that we sat in the dark looking at the dark jungle. And thanks to the rain the safari was cancelled, though the resort owners took regular customers out on a night safari, but told us that it was dangerous out there!!

A major grouse here is that the resort doesnt have fences, which means wild animals as well as maybe thugs can easily get into the place. And our room was totally isolated. The night was really frightening with poor lighting and we were expecting to be mowed down by a tusker any moment! The place is absolutely chilling cold and no provision for room heater.

Room service - forget it. When we asked for coffee in the morning, we were asked to come to the restuarant and take it - that is service for you! Overall our experience was very bad. Nothing to do, listless aproach of the manager who was not to be seen most of the time, no room service- a totally sorry experience. We decided to check out early and left for Ooty for a day visit, that at least saved our trip.

My recommendation is to avoid this place. If you want a night out in a jungle experience and a safari, better go for the Jungle lodges resorts, that is definitely better managed.
