A defining experience

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 14 Nov 2016
I have lived in the plains close to Peora for about 3 years so almost every other weekend was spent between Nanitaal, Mukteshwar, Nakhuchiataal, Seetla, Nighlat etc. We all know the Himalayan views from these towns to be absolutely epic, majestic and maybe even humbling.

I visited The Orchard at Peora in August of 2016 and I was blown away. Having travelled most of the world, from Australia to Denmark, South Africa to Brazil, Turkey to China, USA to Malaysia, I am honestly yet to see a property more tastefully done than the Orchard.

Right from the time you climb the stone steps to reach the entrance of the "house" your eyes are set for a visual treat of classy furniture and fittings. The chandelier that hangs off the ceiling is like nothing you have ever seen! The grill surrounding the seating area only amplifies the appeal of the surprisingly wide and comfy couch and before you even think of going to your room, you will want to plop yourself on it.

For travellers used to a five star hotel experience of a Taj or Oberoi, oh man, believe me you would not expect to find that kind of treatment in the Kumaon. In fact, if nothing else, its only a little bit better cause you don't have that check-in process to undergo.

It wont be long before you are in your high ceilinged room with a super comfy post bed and conveniently placed light switches and plug points. A welcome basket with seasonal fruits and amazing home made cookies will be waiting for you. The bathroom is relatively large and has all the facilities we consider modern, including a running hot water shower for those chilly winter nights. The room we had was on the front facing side of the property and view of the valley from the private balcony is just super. You would wish the bed was there so you could sleep under the stars and wake up to the valley!!

To sum up on the property, believe me when I say, you will want the name of the person who did the interiors and the furniture, and I can save you some time by letting you know its Abhimanyu Bansal. This property is really really well made and has something for anyone.

The food. Wow!!!!! Wow and Wow!!! The food is soooooooooooooo good. You will be treated to an amazing breakfast of bacon and egg and porridge and fruit and home baked bread and the delicious home made preserves. I never in my life had a 3 course breakfast. So good. Beats any 5 star hotel breakfast I ever had.
The local chef is truly an artist in the kitchen. From italian food to the local Kumaon cuisine, there wasn't a dish that disappointed. Writing this review is making me think of the food and my mouth is watering.

I would recommend carrying your own wine but in case you didn't the selection of the wine at the property is fantastic. Im not much of a white wine drinker, but that has now changed.

A great property with amazing food and staff that makes you feel like you are at home in a valley with views second to none. If you have not already been, now is probably a good time to book and head to The Orchard @ Peora estates.
Date of stay: August 2016
Room Tip: All the rooms are awesome. Only 1 room doesn't have a valley view.

Nice pretty hotel with good view of the snow covered peaks of Himalayas. It opened only about one year ago and has only 8 guest rooms. The rooms are large with specially designed furniture. They serve preset eclectic meals that emphasize vegetables and fruits grown in a garden on the property. The staff is super pleasant and helpful.
Our only disappointment was that we were the only guest on the property for the two days we stayed there in early November. Because it was apparently a slow season they didn't offer any of the various activities they advertise on their website. Though we had our own rented SUV the area doesn't seem to have any interesting nearby places to visit. So, our stay turned out to be somewhat boring. The road to Mukteshwar from the hotel is particularly bad even by the standard of roads in that area.

        Dear Mr. Bhartia,

Thank you for taking the time to review us on Trip Advisor, we are so happy to hear that you enjoyed the property and the Himalayan views! The team will be very pleased to hear the kind words regarding the service.

I am sorry to hear about the activities! Our guest compendium in the room describes some of the amazing activities and places of interest close to The Orchard. These include treks and nature related activities, spiritual sites nearby, and visits to some of the most interesting NGOs which are involved in weaving, organic products, and local craft. Jageshwar, Kasar Devi, Kakarighat, and Kainchi are all world renowned temples within driving distance of our property and are easy to get to. That beings said, we will make sure staff is more communicative about these activities.

There are two roads to Mukteshwar from our property, one is through the bird sanctuary, which although shorter, is in a terrible condition and unfortunately your driver took this road in the night.
The other road to Mukteshwar is via Bhatelia which is fully paved, wider, and in excellent condition.

We hope you will give us another opportunity and visit us again at The Orchard as I would like to personally show you the beautiful and exciting sites in our area.

Please do feel free to contact me if you have any questions, we would love to see you again at The Orchard.

Thanks and Best Wishes,
        Siddharth Bansal

You will feel more like you are vacationing in the mountains with long-time friends than staying in a hotel while enjoying your time at The Orchard. When we first arrived in the evening it was late and we had been driving for 12 hours so a private dining experience was created for us on the balcony of our suite. The food (paired with a lovely wine) was delicious, local, and organic and the starry night and nature sounds soothed our weary nerves.
For the next few days we hiked, toured temples, and even went on a evening safari to spot leopards! Spending time with our hosts was like reconnecting with the most hospitable of friends. What a memorable and excellent experience in a beautiful and sacred locale. You must see for yourself!

The perfect getaway just hours from Delhi! This Tuscan estate situated in the hills facing Almora is like nothing you've ever seen in India! Every room and common area has a breathtaking view of the valley and on clear days, snow caps are visible just past the foot of your bed.

I've been an expat in India for 19 years and frequently travel to the hills to unwind and clear out my lungs after exhausting stretches in Delhi. In all those trips, The Orchard has stood high above the rest for its outstanding service, gorgeous vistas and luxurious food.

Everything from the architecture to furniture to dining is designed for discerning luxury travelers. However, it's clear The Orchard is a labor of love and offers an authentic slice of life the major luxury chains cannot.

Chef Rajesh and his team create incredible food and an unforgettable experience that will leave you recharged and looking for reasons to stay in the hills just a little longer.

Room tip: Make sure you've got a suite facing Almora! You get an unbelievable view at all hours of the day.

A long weekend spent at this fabulous property where the scenic, unobstructed mountain views are absolutely breathtaking. As the day transcends from morning to night, the landscape magically transforms... By dawn, clouds descend down into the valley, holding The Orchard mystically afloat each magical morning. By dusk, satellite towns beyond light up like galaxies.. Through the day, the clearer it is the more likely one is to catch a glimpse of the snow capped Himalayas.. Given The Orchard's incredible vantage point, there is a telescope no less in the library room, where many an evening we spent over drinks, Board games and our iPods plugged in, prior to a scrumptuous meal.

Each meal is prepared with utmost care and much thought, using healthy organic ingredients fresh from the kitchen garden and locally sourced produce. The meals are plated, starting with an amuse bouche to kindle one's appetite, followed by the main course and then dessert. Breads and pastries are home baked and the ice creams too, home made. I loved sitting down at the dining table, each time to differently folded dinner napkins!

The rooms are cozy and aesthetically furnished, most with four poster beds, a fireplace for cold winter nights, floor to ceiling windows and/or balconies with your own private views of the spectacular landscape.

Attention to detail at The Orchard is outstanding - better than any retreat I've run away to for a break from Delhi. The rooms were always neat and clean every time we returned to them (and yet you hardly ever see the staff, so it always felt like a very private stay). The soaked almonds left by our bedside every evening are a small example of the little thoughtful touches that made our stay so wonderful.

We also had the pleasure of enjoying the company of our wonderful hosts, the Bansals. Thank you so much for making us feel at home! We will be back, again and again..

Room tip: Ask for the rooms overlooking the front of the property for the spectacular views
