“Peaceful hideaway!”
Reviewed 15 September 2014 for a stay in September 2014

We are just back home in Edinburgh after a very chilled long weekend at the Ferndale Studio Cottage. What a lovely secluded rural retreat and less than a two hour drive from home. An ingeniously designed modern interior tastefully decorated and complimented by a lovely quiet back garden. We were very lucky with the weather and had a very chilled few days...there's plenty to do in this area of Scotland and we caught up with reading and wine appreciation in the garden too!

“heavenly peace and quiet”
Reviewed 6 September 2014 for a stay in September 2014

Great place to stay, so peaceful and quiet. A welcome break from the chaos of life.
So much wildlife lots of red kites, stoats and even a hare sat outside the cottage- also the friendly local cat.
Perfect for walking, thinking and recharging your batteries.
Locals friendly and I had a lovely tour of the church by a very knowledgeable chap.
We were greeted by Anne who was lovely.
Cottage is well thought out, all in all great place to stay.
P.S the Drumlanrig Café in Thornhill does fantastic Pizza

“Complete Chill Time.”
Reviewed 11 August 2014 for a stay in August 2014

My friend and I stayed here with my dog. The cottage is lovely. As soon as we walked in the porch and hung up our jackets and outdoor clothes we opened the main door. Straight away you feel at peace. Bright and spacious. Everything you need is there. Patio doors open out to a lovely country garden with a bench to sit on and a little table and chairs. Part of the garden is a working garden with vegetable plots. Wild strawberries and raspberries. Loads of wildlife to see. Vase of flowers on the coffee table. Parking at the side of the cottage. If you go out of the cottage and turn right it takes you to the village and if you turn right again you get to the ford. My dog loves water so was happy here. If you go left when you come out of the cottage it takes you to the hills. We took a picnic there because there is a bench for you to sit on just through the gate with wonderful views. I would certainly go back and would suggest it to others who want a complete break away from normal life.

“Cosy cottage in stunning location”

We stayed in Ferndale for four wonderful nights in the historic hamlet of Durisdeer.
We were met by the owner, Anne, who displays some of her lovely artwork in the cottage. Anne gave us both a short tour and couldn't have been any more helpful. I'd already communicated with her via email and had found her a font of knowledge!
The cottage is next to the church and nestled between the hills. It's warm, light and fitted with modern fixtures and fittings. You won't see many people but you will see a whole host of animals. From the birds in the garden to the stoats and rabbits flitting about in the nearby fields, the whole area is a wildlife hotspot. Our favourite bit was watching the red kites on the hill hover over the sheep and the sight of the bats feeding outside the front door at dusk. It felt magical and like we'd been transported to a world far away from the city.
As for activities nearby you are spoilt for choice. The beaches at Powfoot and Rockcliffe are wonderful and only 30 miles away along empty roads. The castle at Drumlanrig is worth seeing just to witness the opulence the Duke of Buccleuch lives in. We hired mountain bikes and explores the estate although you could ride tree yourself as it's only a couple of miles from the door of Durisdeer.
We travelled to Loch Ken and Castle Douglas and both places have plenty to see and do. I'd really recommend just putting your boots on and walking out the front door at Ferndale and heading up into the hills to see the Roman fortlet and views across Dumfries and Galloway. It's a stunning part of the world.
A tranquil, beautiful cottage in the heart of a region full of natural wonder. Thanks Anne!

“A tranquil haven in a beautiful setting.”
Reviewed 5 May 2014 for a stay in May 2014

Spent a couple of nights here and wished we could stay an awful lot longer. The studio is comfortable and well equipped and the garden, complete with grass landscape sculpture, is beautiful. Anne, the owner, is an artist and the studio is decorated with her lovely landscapes and really benefits from her artistic touch. There are interesting books to read, comfortable chairs and unlimited peace and quiet with amazing birdsong. The village of Durisdeer is set amongst rolling, green countryside. It is very close to Drumlanrig Castle and is a great base from which to visit all the attractions that Dumfries and Galloway have to offer. We hope to go back again very soon.
