I don't normally write reviews, but sometimes an experience is so bad that you are compelled to. My family and I (my wife and two boys aged 8 and 10) stayed here in August. It was off season and there was no-one else at the hotel, but we had read good reviews and assumed that we would be treated well.
We had booked in advance from England and asked for the main hut, overlooking the valley, and paid (we learnt later) quite a substantial fee given it was off-season and most likely to be empty.
Our first complaint was the room: Stuffy and damp, and clearly unclean. When we went to bed the main blanket smelt of urine and the owners were very reluctant to get us another mattress when we realised the beds were tiny (smaller than a standard double). For the room price the bathroom was very basic, and the mosquitoe net had big holes in it.
Next complaint the food: We had one supper and breakfast. Again, I don't mind eating basic food when travelling, but when you pay a premium you expect something decent. Our dinner was microwaved and stodgy (we heard the microwave whirring away). What made this particularly jarring was that the owner was eating something freshly delivered from the village, right next to us!!
We decided to look around at other hotels after a horrible nights sleep and disgusting food and found somewhere. We came back to the hotel and told the hotel owners, very politely, that we wanted to check out early and they tried to make us pay extra. The owner (the wife) was very frosty and upperty about the whole thing, but we paid here what she wanted, took the hit of being ripped off, but were just glad to see the back of the place.
Horrible! The rest of our stay in Kerala was absolutely amazing. The 3rd time I have been to Kerala, which is why I wanted to spread the word. I'm really surprised that so many other people seem to have had good stays when ours was so bad.
