“A tranquil gateway from Bangalore”
Reviewed 7 July 2016

Went on the first weekend of June. The resort is located several kms inside from the main road and is slightly difficult to locate. The off track road is not in good condition but a SUV can go easily. We were 7 people, all friends and opted for the family villa as we all wanted to stay together.

Once we reached the resort, it was very peaceful and the only sounds you can hear is of birds. They have planted many flower plants and it was good to look at them. The rooms are well maintained. Service was not proper and was a drawback. They have a in-house restaurant but we need to order beforehand so that they canl arrange everything. Tea/Coffee are complimentary and we ourselves prepared it twice as we were not much satisfied the way they prepared. Food was good. Breakfast was traditional. There is a small stream running at the back of the resort. There was little water in it but post monsoon i believe it will be awesome. The games area need to improve a lot

Pros: Location - very peaceful. Food was ok. Rooms were clean. Great place for a laid-back vacation

Cons: Location - Off road condition not so good. Service need to improve a lot. Need to improve a lot on indoor activities and games as many things were broken.

Room Tip: Select cottages. for families, family villa is best.

Wonderful place to stay. Good climate and environment.

Only thing which was little uncomfortable was some wash rooms.

Rest people are very good and caring. Especially Mr. Sarang was very good.

Rooms very spacious and big. Clean as well.

Room Tip: Family Villa or Wood House.

Dear Reader and fellow travelers,

I am excited to present you the story about my amazing experience at "Coffea Aroma Resort - Wayanad". I have visited beautiful Indian state "Kerala" numerous times in past 15 years. Specially , Wayanad where in my past trips I experienced amazing hospitality in a 5 start resort near Vythiri".

This time , planned to visit Waynad more on a photography tour with two of my friends and we were looking for budget accommodation. My friend booked for a night here in "Coffea Aroma". All looked nice for the price we pay , amazing website and good reviews. I wish I seriously considered the negative reviews too, which I did not. "Ignorance leads to disasters".

Well , the "GOOD" things first :

1.Secluded place. A place amidst nature. You will enjoy the "Sound of the Nature".

- But why would you "NOT" go for other resorts to be amidst nature as whole of Wayanad is awesome , read more :)

What is even better :

1.The Resort is "Just There" : Reach "Kunnumbetta" on the highway and call them for direction. They told us to follow the sign boards. We did and entered a narrow hilly path. Drove uphill in a hatchback car (Hyundai i10) for about 500 hundred meters , no sight of the resort. called again and response was - keep coming. We followed our instinct as GPS failed after a kilometer ride uphill.

You can find small boards displaying resort name but "NONE" will show "HOW far the resort is". Basically ,you are expected to drive uphill on a terrain where only 4x4 vehicle can climb till distance unknown. I would leave rest to your imagination.

We drove uphill till a point our hatchback can climb and resort is not on sight. We called them repetitively and finally they told they will send someone.

After an hour wait on the 6 feet wide lane where only one vehicle can pass that too when driven by a person with great level of driving skills, then comes the hotel's driver , who at first just passed-by and did not realize that we were waiting for him. He came for our rescue after we made few more phone calls. We took our car down to the main road and parked in a slot located in Kunnumbetta, Chundale-Meppady Road. Apparently that is where the hotel's parking is located. About 3+ km downhill. From there you got to catch the hotel's jeep , who will take you till the top of the hill where the resort is located.

We were never informed about this arrangement and the manager told that he was expecting us to come in a "Sport Utility vehicle (SUV)" , so the mistake happened.

The manager felt sorry because he FORGOT to INFORM US about -

1.The (No) drive-able road.
2.About the parking arrangement on main road 3.5 kn down hill from the resort.
3.About Jeeps pick up.
4.Forgot to let us know proper direction and the distance from main road to hotel etc etc.

We finally checked-in around 4 pm , after wasting more than 2 hours to reach the hotel due to miscommunication and lack of information. That's the humble start.

Next , icing on the cake: About the "Restaurant".

2. "No fully functional restaurant" : after meeting hotel's driver by 3 pm on our way down to parking , we called the hotel and asked whether we will get food , the response was : Take the driver and have food in town.

Our first learning : You shall inform them in advance probably few hours before check-in to arrange lunch for you. Wisely enough , We ordered dinner by 4 pm.

Read more about dedicated service and hygiene next :

3. Hygiene Hygiene Hygiene: The Janitor who cleaned the toilet in front of us brought us two cups of steaming tea in a matter of few seconds after he was done with his toilet cleaning job. By now I must say , Coffea aroma is a chart topper in hygiene and fastest service. Awesome ! Extraordinary !

The Janitor (along with another teenager immigrant worker) was going down to the restaurant after cleaning the toilet and then the cook met them and asked them to bring us the "Tea" that we have asked for on arrival.

Another best example to lure customer : Multi tasking dedicated staff - same person will serve as Janitor and waiter in no time.

@ Cofea Aroma : You must highlight this toilet cleaner cum waiter service in your website. That will be a great hit among the immigrant teenage workers.

4. King Size bath: Bathroom was big with a soiled toilet seat. So we got it cleaned after check-in and had "Tea" after wards.

5. To our delight , we were provided with toiletries such as a tooth brush , small tooth paste with bath linens immediately after check-in but the soap came after few hours because there was no soap available and they send someone to town to get the soaps. What a nice feeling to wash hands with warm water and soap. Happy Happy.

Learning : Bring your own soap.

Now the best part , next :

6. "Tale of the smiling staff" :

We on Check-in: Can we get a jeep for tomorrow half-day ?

Hotel staff on check-in desk : Yes. Jeep is free. Very friendly staff courteous staff , impressive.

We were taken for a surprised by this complimentary Jeep for half day. Asked the jeep to come at 6 am. During a short talk , I asked the jeep driver - how much is the charge per day , he told it is 2000 rupees for full day and 1000 for half day. Which seems logical to me , BUT hotel guy told us that the jeep was free when we asked during Check-in. Any way , I was sensing something was not just right seeing the level of communication we had received so far.

Next day , we are all set to do sight seeing. Jeep was on time. Nice polite gentleman as driver.

We started from hotel :

1.Came down hill to "Kunnumbetta" - here onward referred as Point "A".
2.Went to Chembra peak (Here onward Point "B").
3.Return "Kunnumbetta" for lunch on way back from Chembra peak.
4.After lunch we went to Pookode Lake ( Point "C" ) from Point "A".
5.Returned to "Kunnumbetta" (Point "A") from Point "C".

So we made a round trip : Start A - > B - > A - > C -> A End.

Back in hotel , we were told to pay for the trip ( this was expected and we were prepared ) but remembering the first conversation this trip was supposed to be free.

After difference of opinion and soon as we realize the importance of ignorance, we asked them to give the bill for the trip and told we will pay for the trip.

And SURPRISE : We were billed approx. rupees 3000 + for a Jeep ride from morning 6 am to 2 pm visiting 2 places with waiting charges and fare as 30 rupees per kilometer.

The manager gave us a "PRINTED BILL" showing distance covered and fare as below :

1. Point A to B : 30 kilometer (Return .i.e. 15 km one way).

Bill amount : 30 km X 30 Rupees = 900 Rupees.

2. Point B to C : 34 Kilometer (One way).

Bill amount : 34 km X 30 Rupees = 1020 Rupees.

3. Point C to A : 31 Kilometer (One way - the same way we traveled).

Bill amount : 31 X 30 Rupees = 930 Rupees.

4. Waiting charge : 200 or so.

Now time for us to take an IQ test of the hotel manager.

He was insisting us to pay 3050 Rupees for the above breakup. Very polite and smiling all the time when me along with my friends were taking our turn to showcase our communication , people management , mathematics , geography , anger management , stress management , social and teaching skills etc. to convince them what was wrong with the bill.

Unfortunately , GPS and mobile network ditched us and we adopted good old "Pen and Paper" method to explain that :

If you take the exact same road in a return journey then ,

Distance from Place B to C = Distance from Place A to B + Distance from Place C to A. Where A is a place in between Location B & and Location C.

So total distance we traveled is 64 Kilometers and "NOT" 95 kilometers.

So, we shall be billed for 64 X 30 = 1920. The bill was goofed up.

And, they kept smiling all the time when we were made them understand what went wrong with the bill.

Finally , the manager (Sabri) understood the mathematics and we paid 2120 including 200 Rupees waiting charge.

Best part was, the manager claimed that he was a "Graduate". He said "Sorry for the mistake" with a winning smile.

IMHO , this how probably technology help reducing people's IQ. He was holding a smart phone , he was showing me the distances from places in Google but he was not able to do the mathematics that a 5 year old kid could have solved in no time.

And all the while , everybody surrounding him , all the staff members , about 10 people , were laughing and giggling at us seeing us going mad in frustration. Seems we were the "Joker of the day". Amazing experience.

By the way , according to the "Government Rate Card" displayed in the jeep (image attached) :

1. Minimum Fare = 150 Rupees.

2. 12 rupees per kilometer afterwards.

Going by that , We should not have paid more then 918 Rupees instead of 2120. I asked them , how old is that rate card , and the answer was , that rate card was from year 2015 and rate increased from 12 rupees to 30 rupees per kilometer in 1 year.

Fellow travelers , I am sure , now the other facts of the stay will come up from my friends also. Followed by a delete request or another post from the management showing you the other face of the coin , however this face remains "Minted" as is.

This was my most memorable "Great Indian" hospitality experience so far.

"Coffea Aroma" - Thank you giving us the wonderful experience. Please share this review in your website.

Recently been there. Location was nice but the mgmt is extremely bad. Here are the list of our bad experiences in this resort:

1. The resort is like 3 kms from main road and the road is v narrow and bad. We kept calling the resort for directions. We somehow struggled and reached and then the staff told the parking is in downhill in the main road from where they provide jeep. I asked why they didnt inform before. Anyways we again went down to park our car. We lost 2 hrs.
2. After checking in found the toilet was not cleaned. Asked for towels and bathing soap. Staff told they'll bring those in 30 mins but they took 2 hrs to provide soap and clean toilet. In bathroom there was a bucket but not mug. Instead there was a plastic bowel. We lost half day to settle down.
3. When we asked for lunch they gave us shock saying they dont provide food. We went downhill in main road by hiring a jeep and have food. By then it was dark and we could not use the day for sight seeing.
4. After returning to resort enquired jeep rental for local sight seeing. Staff told its free of cost from the resort. We anyhow could not believe.
5. Next day early morning asked for tea. Staff promised to make it for us in 10 mins but actually got it after an hour and some shouting.
6. There is no spa, indoor sports, cycles etc as advertised in their website. Everthing is in not working conditions.
7. We hired a jeep for local sight seeing from the resort and got a higjly inflated bill. We argued and then they reduced the bill amount for 1k. The friendly staffs were laughing after the argument. Attaching the bill photo.
8. I felt one of the staff is a minor. He said that his name is Arjun, age 16 yrs and belongs to nepal. Attaching his photo as well.
