“Locally sourced fresh food on menu was utterly gorgeous”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 October 2011

My sister and I stayed here for one night on 15th October 2011 as we were walking locally the next day. I can see what people are complaining about. The manager was a bit distracted when it came to admin and practical things but not so it must be said when he was serving food which he did with an enormous smile on his face. The service was a bit hit and miss at times but after a while we realised that they were a skeleton of staff who did everything and were always busy. The rooms although luwuriously done out and again with a bit of flair, were starting to looked a bit shabby around the edges. They need an odd job man to come in and tackle all of that. Having said all of that we were prepared to ignore all of that because of the stunning food in retaurant and we could see that we were staying in a special place. The Old Inn was very old and the architecture of the building and its grounds was so pleasing with it's low ceilings, big open fireplaces and cosy snug rooms. They had some nice ales on tap. It was decorated with real style and warmth using lovely colours on the walls wood and textiles and there were woollen blankets on every armchair. The restaurant is in an extension at the back of the pub and is rather like a summer house so the light streamed in. The total cost of the food inluding earlier aperetif and bar snacks for a three course meal with wine was £85 for two. For that quality it was reasonable and portions were generous. The cleanliness and bed quality were excellent and yes take ear plugs if you're a light sleeper as the rooms are close together. We loved it and you cannot beat it's close location to the very beautiful Stroud Valleys. We paid £120 for a double room
( Cake and Ale ) incuding a gourmet breakfast with all local produce. Probbaly a bit over priced.

Booked for myself and 2 daughters for 01 Oct. Chased confirmation as they did not email. Booked horseriding in Aug for my daughters (as advertised on their website). They emailed back to say would get in touch if any problems. Phoned twice week before we were due to stay, first call the Manager was vague & said would follow up. Second call went unanswered, so emailed and agaiin, no response. When we arrived, everyone looked blank when we asked when horseriding had been booked for and it had not been booked. Very disappointing Lovely place, room very spacious and clean. Bathroom lovely. Service was very slow and when waiting to be seated in Dining Room for dinner (very pricy) staff did not acknowledge until we were seated 5 mins later. Hot starter came with cold starter 10 mins later, Kitchen had run out of items on menu. I wrote to ask for their comments & apology, no reply to date.

Just had the most awful Lunch with my family. The service was extremely poor and slow (meals came before any drinks and the Roast beef was so full of fat and gristle that it was barely edible and far too rare to consume (we were not asked how we wanted our meat cooked). The most annoying thing was that the staff were completely unapologetic and the second hand message from the chef seems to justify it by saying that 'it was the cut off the joint'.

If I wanted to pay £76 for a kilo of fat, I would have gone elsewhere.

My advice is over rated and overpriced. There are far better places to eat in the Cotswolds.

I can't complain about a single thing. Registration was quick, easy and friendly. The room was very comfortable and clean (except for the tea pot which hadn't been washed in forever). The linens were thick and clean. The bed was comfortable. If you are a light sleeper, you will hear the people in the inn moving about, but this didn't bother me. Breakfast was to die for. Parking was plentiful and easy to get in and out of. There is a public walking trail nearby. While this is out of the way, the town nearby is lovely. No ghosts though. :( The price was great. i highly recommend it and would come back.

Stayed at the Ragged Cot at the last minute and was very pleasantly surprised. This is a beautiful old inn in idyllic quiet countryside. The rooms are spotlessly clean and comfortable. They are modern and have very nice "homely touches" such as fresh coffee and quality toiletries but they still retain their rustic charm.
The staff are very charming and helpful and the breakfast was perfect. I had fresh fruit salad followed by a full English that was made with top quality local produce.
I will certainly stay here again when in the area and only wish that all places were as nice as here that I have previously stayed in. This place is very dog friendly genuinely welcomes your pets which is an added bonus.
