“Great venue, poor accommodation”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 February 2012

This was our first Spa experience and unfortunately it did not live up to expectations. Although the location was breathtaking and the food was lovely, sadly the rooms were no better than a budget hotel. I am assuming that the 4* status is based on the location and the Spa facility as opposed to the accommodation? The first thing we noticed when we opened the room door (126) was a bleach stain on the carpet. The further into the room we went, the more stains on the carpet became apparent along with a 'stray' cashew nut in the middle of the floor!? The bathroom, although clean, had a funny damp smell. Yes - there was tea and coffee making facilties for two (although only one packet of biscuits) and yes there was an ironing board and this may be all that needs to be done to achieve a 4* rating, however the room just seemed generally tired, dirty and basic.

We felt that the swimming pool area was relatively small, especially between 3pm - 6pm which is 'kids time' but also coincides with 'check - in', so was naturally the time that we wanted to go to the Spa (when we arrived). A female employee could be found regularly taking a member of the public's dirty towel from the 'used towel bin' and cleaning/drying the floor area with it by dragging her foot on top of it around the floor!

In comparison, the evening meal was lovely and the treatments I received in the Spa were fantastic.

We clearly made the wrong choice of venue for this Birthday treat!

Spa 6 follows the true philosophy of a spa, offering an extensive heat and water therapy suite in addition to a full range of beauty treatments, to ensure that all our guests leave feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. Every one of our therapists is trained to the highest possible professional standard, so all you have to do is lie back and enjoy the ultimate spa experience.

Children are not permitted in the spa treatment area or gymnasium, however may use the spa pool at restricted times.Children's swimming times and we respectfully ask that guests with children who are 16 and under can adhere to these times.

We are sorry that this guest seemed not to enjoy the stylistic choices that so many of our guests have commented as excellent but we hope that the differences in each of the hotels in our group would provide them with a building style more suited to their tastes. It is significant that we do not market the hotel as a ‘quiet retreat’ or an ‘exclusive four star’, with over 300 bedrooms leading to 600+ guests staying per night at the weekend, The Cotswold Water Park Four Pillars Hotel is a busy resort property and we receive many compliments on what we offer for the fair price that we charge.

Kind Regards,

Had a family meal on a saturday lunch, not overly busy, booked table in advance had name on reservation but no table set up. Table was very dirty, had to ask for it to be cleaned, Staff didn't seem very friendly, food took over an hour to arrive with 2 very hungry children was not at all good, food bland and staff didn't take notice of different requirement from menu, seemed too busy standing in huddles chatting. Had the pumpkin soufle, more like a starter portion and no chestnuts or apples on the plate, was still very hungry after eating this and at £9.95 thought it was very overpriced. Took about 20 mins to clear away plates and not once asked if meal ok. Overall nice surroundings, looks good on the outside, but lacks friendliness and good food. Far better pubs in and around Cirencester to eat and get better food and value for money.

We apologise that this guest did not have a table ready at The Old Boathouse having taken the rouble to make a reservation in advance of their arrival and will ensure the appropriate measures are put in place to ensure that this does not happen again.

We do have a very friendly team in place and any training issues raised in this review will be addressed. The Old Boathouse offers casual dining, somewhere where you can enjoy a drink and a bite to eat in a relaxed setting. In fact, we’re one of the few pubs in the area that serve food all day.

We use as many local suppliers as possible, ensuring that ingredients are excellent quality, and have built up a good reputation throughout the Cotswolds.

We stayed 2 nites at the hotel. Upon arrival the hotel is impressive and located at very nice location. Room with lake view was a bonus. The hotel staff great and friendly. However we were a little disppointed with our room. Yes it is a lovely and cozy room but the room that we were in did not seems to be a luxury 4 stars hotel. There were spider webs in the bathroom and bedroom ceiling. The fan in the bathroom is full of dusts and dirty. The "Spring Mattress" and pillows werent comfortable. Hopefully they will clean the spider webs before the next guests check in. I wont say the room a 4 stars luxury standard ratings. Probably 3 stars!

Visited with my Mum, checking was easy and professional, we had a lovely room over looking the frozen lake, beautiful view and a cosy room. Was good to be able to control the temperature in the room so it was comfortable. Despite the hairdrier turning it's self off half way through getting ready for our evening meal the duty manager responded quickly and sorted the problem.

As we had booked a Spa day for the Sunday we decided to check the pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room out that evening so we knew where everything was for the next day. I was hugely disappointed with this, the steam room was broken, the sauna was full so felt uncomfortable sitting in there as could not lean back against other peoples legs! But most disappointingly was the lack of Jacuzzi as anyone would know - the "jacuzzi" is incorporated in the pool, so just a corner with bubbles the same temperature as the pool. The pool was cool to enter and I could not sit in a bubbling cold corner, when I complained the Spa reception insisted the pool was 31C, it might well have been but that is too cold for a jacuzzi area.

Our evening meal in the Brasserie was lovely, and as included in our package we only had to pay for the drinks and an extra 95p for my Flaming Creme Brulee! Totally worth the extra 95p!

The actual Spa day was very relaxing, due to discovering the cold pool the day before we decided not to bother going in at all. We had 3 treatments, use of the relaxation room and lounge for lunch. The staff were all very helpful and the day was very relaxing, it was good to have the relaxation room to sit and read between treatments, although would have been good for someone to come and get us for the next treatment as there are no clocks about. Thankfully my Kindle has a clock and I remembered to look as we were 10 minutes late for our allotted lunch time.

All in All a relaxing break with only a few niggles which we would learn from next time.

We are happy to learn that these guests enjoyed their stay with us and thank them for their kind comments about our staff, check-in and restaurant.

With regard to Spa6, during the brief period of poor weather conditions, It was difficult to balance the air temperature on poolside. The temperature of the hydrotherapy pool was not affected.

Spa6 offers relaxing jacuzzi jets within the pool intended to stimulare and relax muscles. We do not offer a separate 'hot pool' or 'jacuzzi'. The jets are incorporated into the pool itself.

We offer a range of treatments and all details can be found on our website.

On arrival the hotel looked very impressive and is in a nice location - check in was quick and our room was spacious and clean. However, that was probably the most impressive part of the weekend!

That night, I had booked to go to The Boathouse for dinner. We ordered scallops, whitebait and goat's cheese to start - the whitebait was nice but the scallops were tiny for £8.50 and the goat's cheese was tasteless. For mains, we ordered a burger and seabass. The burger was huge but strangely spicy and stodgy - the seabass was pleasant. When we had finished, it took 20 minutes for out plates to be cleared or to be asked for another drink. When I eventually ordered my drink I was brought the wrong one but didn't complain as I didn't want to wait another 20 minutes! Desert - panacotta - had no flavour at all. All in all disappointing for over £60 - it seemed to me like the chef was worrying too much about making the food look nice and forgetting about the taste!

The next day we tried the spa - the main reason we'd booked the hotel - it was pretty but the pool was freezing and the steam room wasn't working - we came back later in the day to see if this had been resolved but the pool was still freezing and now jam packed - lots of other guests seemed to be complaining about the same things - and the steam room was still broken.

On the plus side, the breakfast we had that morning and the following morning was really nice- lots to choose from, hot and tasty.

On the Saturday night we went for dinner in The Brasserie - this was also nice, soup followed by steak and we were served by a lovely lady called Amy - the meal would have been expensive again but luckily we had some part of dinner included in our stay. We were hoping to follow the meal with drinks in the lounge but at £8.50 for a drink we cut that short!

All in all, the hotel looks nice and has good intentions but doesn't quite live up to expectations.

This particular weekend, we and most parts of the UK experienced some of the lowest temperatures of Winter in some time. These freezing outdoor temperatures unfortunately had an adverse effect on certain elements of our Spa facility forcing us to have to temporarily close our Steam Room Facility.

The temperature of our pool was not affected and manual temperature checks were taken on a regular basis. The air temperature on 'Poolside' is normally set with one degree difference from the pools water temperature and we appreciate that it may have seemed that the water was cold for this reason, however, this was not the case. It was difficult to balance the temperature problems over the weekend and the adverse weather conditions caused further issues when trying to maintain a set temperature mainly due to the freezing of pipes and the mechanics of the Spa itself - all elements outside of our immediate control.

We are happy that our guests using the facilities of Spa6 can now be confident that these issues have been rectified.

There are varied menu choices available at the pub who are happy to cater for our guests, some of which choose to dine at the pub instead of using the hotels 'Lakeside Brasserie' . We have now introduced a Dinner Bed & Breakfast Package where our hotel guests can widen their dining choices by going to the pub if they prefer and the feedback has been positive. This is an ideal choice for those who enjoy a more casual dining experience without the meet & greet and table service that the hotel offers.

Kind Regards,

Stephen J Brock & Dominic Haigh
