“From apprehensive to FABULOUS”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 March 2012

We stayed at the EPM from Feb 19 through March 2. I must admit that we booked this holiday some time ago and were somewhat apprehensive because of numerous ‘Mexico’ stories that we heard during the months previous to our trip. At one point we nearly cancelled, thinking that although the odds of trouble were slim, why risk it. The only thing that kept us from hitting the cancel button was the rave reviews from Tripadvisor posters. We arrived in Mexico and encountered a terrible mess at immigration with one customs officer and several hundred people in a non-air-conditioned line waiting to be processed. It took several hours and both of us have some mobility medical problems, which made this even worse. We were not impressed and had someone offered us a seat on the next flight home, we would have turned around and gone home. However …. Once we arrived at EPM, our mood and opinions instantly changed. We were very impressed with the wonderful greeting at the front desk and, when we arrived at the room, we were blown away by the cleanliness and beauty of the resort. We had a swim up room on one of the lazy rivers with a view of the little rope bridges and beautiful grounds. We felt at home immediately and were really pleased with our choice to come to EPM. Our minds were changed that fast! Then, we experienced the hospitality (Maria even delivered drinks to our patio) and the terrific restaurants. This really is a 5 star AI – note that we do not consider this to be a 5 star like a St. Regis for example, but for an AI, it is absolutely a 5 star. The food ranged from very good to excellent, with our favorite being the Tapas restaurant. We tipped for all drinks and restaurants and other various services and we also believe this helped make our service great and caused the staff to remember us. I don’t think this is absolutely necessary, but I really do believe they deserved it and it also enhanced our holiday.
I won’t repeat all of the wonderful things other travellers have noted, except to say it is all true however, I thought I’d mention a few things that other travellers with mobility issues (mine is arthritis, my husband’s is a bad back) might like to know. First, be careful on the building you chose to ensure your walk to the various activities and restaurants is not too far. We were in building 7 and this seemed to be a great central location. It was quite hot for long walks and there are no resting spots along the way. It would be nice if they placed benches along the walkways. There is plenty of room for benches and we would have welcomed the resting spot and also a place to enjoy various views around the beautifully groomed grounds. Secondly, the bed is very high and can be difficult for some to get up into. It would be nice if they offered little stepping stools on request. We found the bed to be firm but comfortable, which suited us, but others may find it a little too firm in which case you should ask for a topper. I booked the spa for a Swedish massage and ahead of the massage they offered an hour long hydrotherapy session. The hydrotherapy was too intense for me and I did not enjoy it. I felt quite beat-up after that session and in retrospect I probably should not have considered that with my health issues. The massage however was wonderful except that the massage rooms were at the top of a long staircase (no elevators) which was difficult for me. Lastly, I seemed to be a magnet for the no-see-um bug bites on the beach. After 2 days I was covered with bites/welts, but not a single one bit my husband. Bring lots of bug spray! Once I started using the bug spray all was fine.
We had a wonderful holiday and would definitely go to another Excellence resort! We met lots of great people, had a lot of laughs and just had an all-round great time. We can’t wait for the Excellence in Oyster Bay to be finished.

Room Tip: Review their on-line map to select your room/building and request it before arriving.

We have just recently returned from another beautiful week at the EPM. This was our second year in a row at this resort. Congratulations to the management who have obviously invested everything into the staff who are friendly and sincere and provide a standard of excellence in every aspect. We love everything about this resort from dining experiences, breakfast room service, walks on the beach, lazy river relaxation and spa treatments. Special thanks to Mariana, Guest Service Manager for the upgrade to a beautiful roof top terraced room. Her enthusiastic efforts to correct a small booking glitch were much more than we expected. Also a special thanks to Nayelli for the incredible spa treatments which added to our R&R, the little extras were greatly appreciated. Chocolate foot massages were fabulous!!!! And last but not least, we looked forward to every day sitting at the martini bar and seeing Julien's smiling face. His prompt service and excellent mixology were a thing of beauty.

This was our first time at the EPM and second Excellence. We will never stay anywhere else and are trying to get back again this year. We were treated so well by all the staff. Our room was perfect. We were in the club section and was totally worth it. My husband is recovering from a back injury and this bed in our room was perfect for him to sleep, which is hard for us to find. The lounger on the balcony was also very comfortable. We ate at Spice twice as the food was great and no reservations were required which is another big plus for us. We also found the whole resort to be very very clean. The spa was a special treat too and worth every penny. In our opinion you cannot go wrong at the EPM.

We really appreciate the hotel , the differents restaurants and the beaches, but our stay ended on a very sad note. The front desk call us the night before departure to offer us to have the bell boy take our baggages. We tought it was a nice offer and did accept it. In the morning the bell boy came take possession of our baggages 30 minutes before our cab was planned to arrived. My hushband impressed during all week by the customer service level made the errors to give them his backpack containing his iphone with the 2 suitcases to the bell boy. we were suppose to get our baggage 10 minutes before the cab arrived but when I asked the bellboy for my suitcases ,when we arrived at the front desk, they said that we would get them only when the cab would arrive...no wonder why , someone was searching for valuable things in our baggages....So, always be careful and never leave your bagagge to anyone.

Returned from EPM about a week ago and wish we were still there. My wife and another couple stayed for 5 nights and enjoyed every aspect of the resort. We have also stayed at the Excellence Riviera Cancun and found them to be very comparable. Liked the updated rooms and newness of EPM. But still prefer more classic architecture of ERC. Just feels more like Mexico.

Rooms: We were in a standard junior suite with spa view. It was a terrific room with all the amenities. Balcony, Jacuzzi tub, rain, shower, Flat screen. I see no need to upgrade but that's just our opinion.

Beach: beautiful with lots of chairs no problem finding them. Yes there is some sea grass, but it is the ocean so it is to be expected and they do make every attempt to rake it. Unique in that much more secluded than other resort beaches we've experienced.

Entertainment: Only took in a few shows. Micheal Jackson show was fun.

Food: The food was very good. Our favorite was the french I had the Fillet Mignon and it was way above expectations. Spice was second favorite. The only one I personally didn't enjoy was the Flavor Market Tapas Bar. Not because it wasn't good food but I think it was just not the type of meal I was looking for that evening. Buffet and room service was excellent.

Pools: Really only took in the swim up bar. Fun place to hang out in afternoon. Was definitely heated.

Spa: We took in the Anti stress and relaxation massage for 80 minutes. Awesome. Not cheap about $150 per person, but worth every penny.

Participated in the cigar tasting and Tequila tasting. Enjoyed all aspects of it except timing. Both were at 5-6pm right when the swim up bar is getting going. Wanted to do wine tasting but was full. Wine tasting on Wed. Tequila tasting is on Thurs. Cigar tasting is on Fri.

We did also golf the Playa Mujeres Golf club. It was kind of eerie such a beautiful course but no one there. Very few golfers take advantage of this course. Bring lots of balls as water and mangroves ate a lot of balls. Recommended.

Hopefully this gives you some insight into the resort would highly recommend it to couples.

Room Tip: Building 7 was close to everything.
