We stayed at the EPM from Feb 19 through March 2. I must admit that we booked this holiday some time ago and were somewhat apprehensive because of numerous ‘Mexico’ stories that we heard during the months previous to our trip. At one point we nearly cancelled, thinking that although the odds of trouble were slim, why risk it. The only thing that kept us from hitting the cancel button was the rave reviews from Tripadvisor posters. We arrived in Mexico and encountered a terrible mess at immigration with one customs officer and several hundred people in a non-air-conditioned line waiting to be processed. It took several hours and both of us have some mobility medical problems, which made this even worse. We were not impressed and had someone offered us a seat on the next flight home, we would have turned around and gone home. However …. Once we arrived at EPM, our mood and opinions instantly changed. We were very impressed with the wonderful greeting at the front desk and, when we arrived at the room, we were blown away by the cleanliness and beauty of the resort. We had a swim up room on one of the lazy rivers with a view of the little rope bridges and beautiful grounds. We felt at home immediately and were really pleased with our choice to come to EPM. Our minds were changed that fast! Then, we experienced the hospitality (Maria even delivered drinks to our patio) and the terrific restaurants. This really is a 5 star AI – note that we do not consider this to be a 5 star like a St. Regis for example, but for an AI, it is absolutely a 5 star. The food ranged from very good to excellent, with our favorite being the Tapas restaurant. We tipped for all drinks and restaurants and other various services and we also believe this helped make our service great and caused the staff to remember us. I don’t think this is absolutely necessary, but I really do believe they deserved it and it also enhanced our holiday.
I won’t repeat all of the wonderful things other travellers have noted, except to say it is all true however, I thought I’d mention a few things that other travellers with mobility issues (mine is arthritis, my husband’s is a bad back) might like to know. First, be careful on the building you chose to ensure your walk to the various activities and restaurants is not too far. We were in building 7 and this seemed to be a great central location. It was quite hot for long walks and there are no resting spots along the way. It would be nice if they placed benches along the walkways. There is plenty of room for benches and we would have welcomed the resting spot and also a place to enjoy various views around the beautifully groomed grounds. Secondly, the bed is very high and can be difficult for some to get up into. It would be nice if they offered little stepping stools on request. We found the bed to be firm but comfortable, which suited us, but others may find it a little too firm in which case you should ask for a topper. I booked the spa for a Swedish massage and ahead of the massage they offered an hour long hydrotherapy session. The hydrotherapy was too intense for me and I did not enjoy it. I felt quite beat-up after that session and in retrospect I probably should not have considered that with my health issues. The massage however was wonderful except that the massage rooms were at the top of a long staircase (no elevators) which was difficult for me. Lastly, I seemed to be a magnet for the no-see-um bug bites on the beach. After 2 days I was covered with bites/welts, but not a single one bit my husband. Bring lots of bug spray! Once I started using the bug spray all was fine.
We had a wonderful holiday and would definitely go to another Excellence resort! We met lots of great people, had a lot of laughs and just had an all-round great time. We can’t wait for the Excellence in Oyster Bay to be finished.
