Tarkarli is one of the best and most safe beach of coastal Maharashtra, also called Kokan. The beach has flat table land which can accommodate 5-6 football grounds ! Very safe to swim and play group water games. Tarkarli is a small beach side village in Taluka Malvan, Sindhudurg Destrict. You will find that almost every alternate local home has started lodging and boarding facilities there, so getting the accommodation should not a problem even in peak season. Mumbai-Tarkarli is about 500 kms drive which will not take more that 12 hours.
Visited Devbagh, Tarkarli and Malvan. Stayed at Omkar Deluxe in Devbagh.
Devbagh beach is more like a secluded private beach, with very few visitors around.
Water sports Jet ski, Water scooter, Banana ride etc. at Tarkarli back water is fun.
Best is the Scuba Diving organised near Sindhudurg fort at Malvan. The guides are well trained and helped novices/first timers like us to do Scuba diving. They also took under water Photo, while I was holding the coral reef. It was thrilling to hold the coral reef, while small fishes were swimming all around.
Only draw back is water is not very clear and hence visibility is limited. Request the Scuba diving organisers to develop new Locales, which are less crowded.
Tip to pure vegetarians, stay at Malvan or nearby, as Pure vegetarian food joints are in Malvan only. In Devbagh and Tarkarli all Hotels serve mixed fare, though the quality of Veg preparation is also good. Most of the Bill Boards in this area read "sudh sakhahari, swadist manshahari, translated it means Pure Vegetarian, Tasty Non Vegetarian. This belt is famous for its Malvani Sea Food.
Traveled all the way from Mumbai to get nothing.
A vast expanse of beach with nothing much of interest.
Had gone for snorkeling which was not possible due to unclear water.
wasted 10 hours of travelling one way and then back for nothing
The Konkan coast has a number of beaches... and nice beaches I would say however this recent trip to Tarkarli just swept me...
Ganpatipule used to be on top of my list however Tarkarli has given a big fight... n ya... am a waterbody :) I love water however thats not the only thing I look for while planning a vacation, I also look for the place, the facilities, approach and other to do things around... counting all of that, Tarkali is certainly an Ace.
The place is far from Pune and took us fair amount of time to reach... an advice, dont go via Kolhapur, take the Nipani route which has much better roads... Tarkarli has the beach and a few good resorts/ hotels however the town is Malvan (8 kms) where you get what you get in a town :)
now talking about Tarkarli... I have never seen a beach so calm... at 3 PM, there was not a single wave coming, water had no push or pull... as silent as a pool... weird hmmm!!
n the clarity...wow... shoulder depth water and I could see my shadow on seabed...
no rocks... no stones...no weeds... just blue vastness... ah... heavenly...
MTDC has the best property I would say... beach just in front of cottages and restaurant...
there are other hotels as well and not so costly...
now Malvan... thats the town with okay restaurants, you could find food which is not seafood... ha ha... the beach there is nice too...
now to add to it all... Scuba and Snorkeling... I think its the only scuba site in Konkan... though they dont take you quite deep yet its a fun experience... loved it...
I could brag more about the place... colors... cleanliness...serenity... n tell me assure you... you will get it all...
the CALM I wanted to find...
Visited Tarkarli beacch on the 19th-21st Feb 2013. Stayed at MTDC on the 19th. The MTDC property is very well maintained and the location is just fabulous.. it is bang on the beach!!!!!
You sit on the varandah of the room and can keep on gazing at the beautiful sea or watch the Sun set from the varandah!!!!!! You can also relax with a book in the hammock provided outside every cottage!!!! We stayed at a homestay property Visawa on the next day This property is situated on a five acre land and is very well maintained. Their kitchen is maintained by another person and you get to taste true Malvani cuisine!! we had a fish called red snipper it tastes very good and you do not get it easily in Pune...We also had tiger prawns cooked in malvani masala, a real spicy dish!!! The quality of food served at Visawa was better than the one at MTDC... One can stay at MTDC and have meals at Visawa also. Overall a very relaxing and wonderful getaway!!!!!!!
We found the beach to be clean and not crowded at all. However there was not much of a lifegaurd service either. We did take a boat service to go to Psunami beach where they had few adventure beach games. Slightly on the expensive side but still worth the trip. That beach was full of small small baby crabs.
