“Ticks all the boxes......on paper”
Reviewed 11 June 2012 via mobile

This hotel on paper was everything we were looking for. Suites, a la carte restaurant, Thalgo spa, pools.

Firstly I would like to say we loved the area, close to great beaches, beautiful countryside and good restaurants. We hired a car as suggested by various people on here and enjoyed exploring the area.

We stayed in a townhouse and were on half board. The townhouse was very spacious with two bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs and a lounge/diner and kitchen downstairs. The overall condition was average with stained sofa and chipped chairs. The kitchen has a washer, dishwasher, fridge and freezer, however was lacking in other areas. Plates and cutlery were provided but no wine glasse, etc. It was very difficult to prepare a meal with no equipment. Why would I need to prepare a meal when on holiday? Well the food was dreadful. We arrived late and room service stops at 9.30 so we headed to the buffet. We were greeted with cold, dried out food from being under lamps for so long. Salads and cold dishes looked unappetising. I tried the chocolate mousse and after one mouthful had to spit it out as it was full of nuts. I have an allergy and nothing was signed so beware. We asked the waiter who said there was nuts in it but did not seem at all concerned that I had eaten them or if he could help.

We made excuses for the food, being late etc and headed to breakfast the next day. All hot items were cold and the quality of everything else was awful. Very cheap ingredients, the most ridiculously cheap orange and apple juice I had ever tasted. Jam so sweet you couldn't eat it. I could go on but you get the idea.

The only other time we saw the food again was when we were still at the pool at 7 when the buffet opened. We witnessed the waiter tipping a big dish of food upside down and it didn't move. The staff all thought this hilarious but shows what they were thinking of the food they expected us to eat. Looked at the menu everyday and culinary delights included turkey a la orange and spiritual fish!

Back to the townhouse. Quite clean although some cobwebs and filthy toilet brushes. You were expected to use the same towels and sheets all week, which is not very good when some red medicine was spilt on the sheets and they weren't changed all week. Same with the towels, when we put them in the bath. They were taken away and not replaced!

Service was very mixed. Some staff great, some a little fake and over the top. Staff at pool bar were useless, one man told me to see someone else when he was standing there not doing anything. After 20 minutes of our drinks standing there and noone bringing them over, we went to get them and the lady shouted at us that she had been too busy doing another bill and another order. When we said we would leave the drinks, the response was "whatever".

Some responses were dealt with immediately, some took days with several phone calls.

This could be a great hotel but it wasn't. We wanted to like it but there were just one too many faults.

BEST POINTS

Suite was very good with everything you may need with 2 flat screen TVs, one in the lounge and 1 in the bedroom, the bathroom was well equipped and fairly spacious
.
We unfortunately had a very thick layer of dust and lipstick on the black cups and saucers on the convenience tray when we arrived, so were not impressed as we were ready for a drink.

Very clean throughout the hotel, gardens and pool area.
Balcony was like a galley kitchen long but very narrow. The balcony chairs will be useless for anyone who is slightly rounded.
The view was very good
.
They have their own stream and pond which is teaming with frogs and fish. This was a great feature as the noise the frogs made in the evening made you really feel like you were in the countryside (which we were)
ps you could not hear them in the room
.
The spa was fantastic and the owner was extremely knowledgeable and helpful, please use it you wont be disappointed.

WORST POINTS

There are no cushions on the sun loungers as the pictures in the brochures and their website clearly shows on their evening picture of one of the pools, we asked about this and were fobbed off.
There is no A La Carte also stated on the website, maybe that was a bonus if the rest of the food was a guide.
You do need a car, as we had, otherwise you are stranded or tied to shuttle bus times.
The food was a great disappointment not only for choice of breakfast etc but it was usually luke warm or worse.
Salads and burgers were acceptable at least.
We had evening meal once and that was enough, apart from the soup.
The pool bar service was slow and the amount of missed opportunities to sell more drinks/ice cream and snacks during the day whilst people are sunbathing etc astounded me. Customer service is paramount in these difficult times and one or two of the staff seriously let the team down with their attitude at times. Most of our time was spent out in the Carvoeiro restaurants with great food, service.
Towels are E1.50 per person per day.
There is no money exchange either as stated.

Overall it is a modern hotel, in a peaceful location with good suites ( I was told the hotel rooms were ok), Poor food and Below average Customer Service at times with no ambition to make customers spend more money, which we all expect on our holidays.
2 of the main reasons I booked this hotel was the cushioned loungers (Back Problem) and A La Carte dining neither of which we got.

It has such a lot of potential as all the basics are there, but excellent service and good food are paramount when you go on holiday.

My wife and I stayed here for a week in May 2012 and had a brilliant stay. We had booked through lowcostholidays.com, hoping for a cheap holiday, so didn't have high expectations from the hotel. However, it really is lovely, and actually feels quite luxurious. We had a standard twin room which was very clean, well decorated and a good size. The pool area is lovely, and very clean, and beyond this is a reasonably large landscaped area where you can sit out or even have a small after dinner stroll. All the staff were great too.

The one "criticism" that others make is that the hotel is relatively remote, and that is fair - it is about 3-5km from the coast and the nearest town (Carvoeiro). However, I would say that you can easily fill your week with 2 or 3 days relaxing in/around the hotel, and then do some/all of the following:

- take the hotel's courtesy bus to Marinha Beach which is an amazing cliff-backed beach
- take the hotel's courtesy bus to Carvoeiro for half or a full day (the town is ok, worth a wander and a sit on the small beach, though not amazing)
- go on one of the day or half day coach trips in the Algarve with pick up from the hotel. We went to Silves and Monchique and had a great trip
- you could do a 3 day car hire via the hotel.

We stayed half-board and the food is, understandably, a buffet, with most evenings the main courses being grilled meat and fish that is realy well cooked. If you were really looking for things to criticise, I'd say the food was very nice but that after a week it did become a bit monotonous, but that really is a very minor complaint.

Would highly recommend it the hotel as a place to relax for a few days and/or to use as a base for exploring the area.

We stumbled across this place but saw the good reviews and booked Easter week for £500 via an online agency. I was pleasantly surprised that the resort replied to a few email queries I had before we got there which I took as a good sign. We hired a car at Faro Airport via the internet (used Discovery Cars, good service, Seat Ibiza Estate, only 11,000 km so like new, cost €200 inc Excess Waiver Insurance which was €21 - we also paid about £25 to the UK booking agency, I would just go direct next time - www.algarvecarbooking.com).

Resort fairly easy to find (once you are heading out of Faro in the right direction....) but definitely take a detailed map especially if travelling at night as it is a bit tucked away. Arrived about 22,30 and very helpful reception, we had a townhouse which was ideal with 3 kids (although only 2 bedrooms so one slept on sofabed in lounge). We had a great week, weather bit mixed but generally sunny, we self catered so just had the breakfast buffet a couple of times which the kids enjoyed (€10 + €5 for kids which seemed reasonable and they defintely got their €5 worth...!)

You really need a car as there is nothing walkable, we drove to all the local toursit spots and beaches (which are great although can lack facilities) as well as the supermarket so the car was money well spent. The resort itself is excellent, very well looked after, large grounds, Kids club, small gymn, tennis court and 2 pools so ideal with kids. Probably not the best place if you want night life as it is quiet and you would need to drive to any bars etc.

All in all, the kids loved it and we had a relaxing week mixing sightseeing and a bit of lounging by the pool (still v.cold for swimming in!). We flew Jet2 from Blackpool which was convenient for us, Jet2 were very good - the key benefit really is that you get allocated seating which is one less stress when you have 3 kids, compared to RyanAir, and the air hostesses seemed to actually be happy rather than wishing they were somewhere else (again a la RyanAir). Flights cost nearly £800 so not cheap but could not find cheaper so market rates I guess....

Room Tip: The Townhouses are very good, all the benefits of hiring a villa and self catering but in a nice com...

After deciding we wanted to go to Portugal, we did a lot of research and found this hotel. We booked on hotels4u at an amazing rate, and we couldn't have been more happy with our stay.
The hotel was clean and modern, and the room was comfortable and a good size. The pool area is lovely, as are the hotel grounds.
One of the best things was the AMAZING breakfast!! And the staff were brilliant - all so friendly and helpful, particularly the girl on reception (Paula, I believe?) The mini-spa was lovely too, and was complementary to use.
The only negative aspect would be location if you don't have a car. We would recommend renting a car and bringing a sat nav - our car was under £100 for 7 days and we explored the areas and even went to Lisbon for the day.
All-in-all, we would not hesitate in coming back here, but we did see the actual rates at the front desk (which were a lot more than we paid) so a return stay would be dependent on the price at the time. Portugal itself is wonderful - excellent, cheap food (as long as you avoid major tourist spots) and lovely people.
