Stayed for six night at the Andaman Seaview Hotel during March 2012. The hotel is at the southern end of Karon Beach approximately a one hour drive from the hotel. Contrary to the implication of the hotel name, room 104 certainly has no view of the Andaman Sea.
Upon arrival, the friendly and welcoming staff dealt with the formalities and greeted us with a refreshing fruit juice. We were upgraded to a room offering direct pool access which to be honest was of no interest to us whatsever, in fact we felt that the room was not especially private due to the sunbathers outside.
As noted by several other reviewers, I felt that the hotel is a little passed it's best. The plumbing system is noisy, the air-conditioning also noisy with a defective thermostat which was reported to the maintenance staff but remained unresolved despite their interventions. I was provided with three kettles before one was found that actually worked.
On a positive note, the staff are exceptionally welcoming and friendly, they seem to try hard to ensure customers are left witn a positive experience. My slight criticism was of the reluctance of reception staff to call a taxi, instead suggesting I venture out on the street to hail a taxi or negotiate with the abhorrent tuktuk drivers. Quite frankly I would expect it to be not too much trouble for reception to simply call for a car.
The hotel seems very popular with Russians, they were certainly the largest client base in the hotel. Whilst I have no desire to take my foreign holidays surrounded by other Brits, the Russians appear a cold, dour group of people and not quite as affable as us Brits.
Food in the hotel is adequate, breakfast is a buffet with assorted fruits, cereals and a wide variety of hot dishes. I didn't eat dinner but noticed that a large buffet was laid on for the Full Moon Party, the food looked nice, once again a buffet with a variety of meat, seafood and assorted Thai and Western dishes, this extravaganza costing just short of 700bht per person. Unfortunately every morning at breakfast, the hotel management treat the guests to piped music playing throughout the hotel dining area, after about the third day it became very tedious, we could have done without it.
Outside the hotel are a number of small restaurants and bars which seemed popular, I had a "takeaway" from one as we were tired and couldn't be bothered going out - my food was cheap and very tasty! There are also several shops offering massage, laundry services (which we used and were very good) and a convenience store for snacks and drinks at cheaper prices than ghe hotel minibar.
In summary, despite the welcoming and hospitable demeanour of the staff, I wouldn't come back, I would save a few money pennies and spend the money on a more expensive and luxurious place to stay. You get what you pay for.
If you are expecting a romantic hotel offering wonderful views of the ocean and cocktails overlooking the beach at sunset then this is not the place for you.
