“The special Stromatolites are very rare, and worth seeing”

Stromatolites in Bacalar Rapids
Reviewed 18 January 2017

The ecosystem in Bacalar is one of the most amazing things I have seen in Mexico. Be sure and get a guide who will explain the diversity of the lake and how the area was formed. Also the history, it is a truly amazing place, and should be explored. Enjoy the lake on day that is bright and sunny to get the "seven color" effect.

Lots of great restaurants around the lake an in the town of Baclar, so be sure to explore the town as well.

Enjoy!

During our stay at Explorean Kohunlich we were taken to the Bacalar Rapids for one of our daily Eco Tours and it was amazing. We were a group of 5 couples with 3 guides. We kayaked to the spot where the Rapids start and floated down the gentle Rapids from there. It is a soft current and the most beautiful pristine natural area of Bacalar where the smaller end of the Lagoon Xul-Ha chanels through a narrow area fed by underground rivers and springs into the larger part of Bacalar Lagoon. The water is fresh water, crystal clear and had so many beautiful colors from green, to deep blue to turquoise. We loved, loved, loved this part of Bacalar Lagoon. There was a cute looking restaurant called Rapids at the most narrow part of the Rapids which offered kayaks and things to float on. Probably a great way to get into the Rapids if you are without a guided tour. Go, Go, Go before mass tourim finds this area or they start bringing droves of people from cruise ships. We went on a weekday and our group was alone!

The place we visited had an entry point and you can float down river and then do it again. These natural prehistoric formations are amazing and should be viewed before they all die off. The water was also a nice break from the heat! Great eco friendly
place.

Looking for a stopover on the way to Belize we found the Bacalar lake by chance! What a surprise : probably the most beautiful lake we have seen in our lifes! The excursion to the stromatolytes was simplay breathtaking, the snorkeling in the incredibly clear and warm water was a pleasure ! The "rapids" are nor rapid, you are just floating enjoying and hoping that they will not end in the next few hours,,,,,,
We fell in love wih the lake, in fact when we exerienced the rip-off and partly spoiled nature in Belize we came back for a second stay ! We cannot believe this lake is not wolrdfamous !!??
