Review of Cart Ruts

Cart Ruts
Reviewed 15 February 2017

If one is not specifically interested in the likely explanations of Malta’s cart-ruts, which run along stretches of rough rock floor, and occasionally disappear off the sheer drop, one may take a walk in Malta’s countryside and regard this phenomenon as an open-ended mystification. Conjectures there are several, but the calculated guesses link them to the dragging of heavy loads on stilts, or the transport of boulders on wheels for temple building. These are the more likely suppositions by archaeologists, but they are by no means conclusive. Alternatively, others link them to water conduits. At the end of the day, it is the fascination of the unknown that remains, and the fact of having seen them for yourself during an invigorating scenic walk on a lovely day.

The island of Malta is scored by numerous examples of ancient cart ruts, they have been the subject of debate for hundreds of years, and their origin, form and function continues to arouse interest to this day.

It is generally assumed that the pairs of 'ruts' were made by some form of vehicle (possibly wheeled). Furthermore, it is assumed that they were produced by repeatedly carrying heavy loads, such as stones to the temples. However, there are several objections to this idea. For example:

1. Some ruts no where near temples. Stone allover Malta.
2. Some under water, some kilometres long and others uphill.

The cart ruts in Naxxar were the best we found in Malta and we were glad to have seen them. You can make the trip out of town even more worthwhile by looking at the pill box next door too.

Very hard to find, for the enthusiast only. We took ages to find these, as one of our party was very interested in Cart Ruts. Interesting, not spectacular.
