“Recent refurbishment”
Reviewed 2 June 2012

A regular visitor to most of the hotels in the Equatorial stable, I find most very friendly and comfortable (the exception being the one in Cameron Highlands which is a disgrace). The equatorial in Penang has recently undergone refurbishment of all it's rooms and it really shows! The hotel has a very friendly atmosphere and is great for a weekend or school holiday retreat as most people flock to the beach hotels. There are also some great offers at these times.

The View restaurant is an excellent French restaurant and the Kimpchi offers superb Japanese fare. The Coffee Garden is nothing special though and pool dining can be slow and lacklustre - we waited nearly an hour for a mineral water and a half-cooked beef burger.

Other irritations include a seldom cleaned hot/cold plunge pool in the men's changing rooms - this definately needs a refurbishment - and a rip-off taxi service.

Stayed here several times in 2011. Service at the reception is average. On few occasions, there were trainees attending to me. Just need to be patient with their unfamiliarity, mistakes and giggles among the group of trainees.

Spacious and comfortable rooms. Good variety of food at the buffet breakfast. It has got a nice little garden for a little walk, accessible from the lobby. The hotel especially from the lobby is airy and windy with lots of green and nature. The swimming pool is nice too, usually able to find a corner for myself.

Internet is costly. Buffet dinner at coffee garden is pricey but worth the value. Kampachi Japanese restaurant is overpriced with food quality below average.

The only setback is the location. If you've got your own transport, this will not be an issue. Otherwise, there's almost nothing within short walking distance from the hotel.

One of the best Hotels I stayed. Really good rooms and superb breakfast. Highly recomended. Bit too far from the city.

I have been staying in this hotel on and off over the years. Last time the rooms were run down and not exactly comfy. However, after the makeover the wing with the newly refurbished rooms are nice. The room is of normal size, comfy for 1 or a couple.

The shower cubicle is a bit small but the hotel provides all basic requiremenrs - toothbrush, shaver etc. Room could do with more lighting. The deco is simple but tasteful.

The employees are generally nice, helpful and attentive.

Location wise, a bit far from everything. You will need a car to move around, even if you just want to go to te nearest convenience store. So, if you dont have a car, be prepared to hole up here. The hotel is however closest to the airport.

All in all, nice hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for the Newly refurbished rooms.......they cost a bit more but nice

I usually stay in this hotel for my business trips to Penang. Its located near the airport and major industrial zone. Its perfect for the business traveller but not so great if you are on holiday as its far away from town and the main tourist attractions. Its one of the older design hotels with a huge atrium lobby. It has that garden feel to it with all the plants and spaciousness, which is a welcome relief especially after you come back from stressful business meetings and want to relax and unwind. The pool is set amongst the garden and a nice place to relax in. The buffet breakfast has a good spread of international and local food.

Room Tip: Get rooms that face the coast for nicer views.
