Most beautiful setting!

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 8 May 2016
This place is stunning, quaint feel to the old fashioned setting and the surrounds are breath taking! The service is outstanding from the moment we arrived till we left! The food is great (but they forgot I had requested no fish due to allergies). Very relaxing and lovely walks to go on around the cottages. We traveled with friends who treated us as our wedding present, however its a bit over priced for what you get. We stayed in room 4 and it looked a bit tired. Our friends stayed in room 6 which was way more modern with nice modern bed. Room 4's bed makes the entire room look very dated and old looking. Overall, a lovely getaway and do hope to go back someday!

Room Tip: Room 6, nice and modern. Room 4 very old and dated.

After years of reading about and wanting to go to Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse, I finally got my wish. The drive there is through the most beautiful part of the Drakensburg. The welcome at Cleopatra was amazing, the grounds and the entire setting are stunning. I loved the introduction to the dinner and the history of the farmhouse. Very interesting and delivered in an engaging fashion. On the negative side, I was expecting Masterchef-type food considering that this is a foodie destination, however the first two courses were very tasty and the last two very average. We were told that no food was served on the bone and although mistakes can happen I did find two bones in my oxtail. The mushroom soup was very tasty, not wow, but also probably the best dish on the menu. The fish was overcooked and dry and the caramel on the creme brulee was still sugary. Breakfast the next day was different but I found it odd that canned fruit had been added into the fresh fruit dish and the hollandaise sauce on the eggs benedict was quite tasteless. The rooms were very much colonial farmhouse but definitely lacked the 5 star luxury feel. The one bathroom had a huge water stain on the ceiling.

I definitely think that this was probably a 3.5 star experience and perhaps the cost per person should be lowered because I felt like I had been cheated. The staff are exceptional and very welcoming so this rating is not a reflection on them but rather on the disappointing food and the lack of a 5 star luxury experience.

highly recommend this wonderful little location in the drakenburg mountains. good walking. good food from a reputable chef. nice central area with open fires and board on waterfront. great hosts that make you feel welcome as a hosting family for a dinner treat. intro to the evening in the lobby by the host, menu changing every day with good local ingredients. rooms not extremely luxurious but nice and comfortable with open fires lit for you every night for afterdinner drink or relaxing in your room. highly recommended for location, food and welcoming hosts. at reasonable price.

The best time to fully enjoy Cleopatra must be in the early summer when the beautiful garden is in bloom. Great walks in stunning scenery and a five course chef dinner when you get back. A feeling of home away from home, with cozy sitting areas around several fireplaces. Not exactly luxurious, but charmingly relaxed.

Room tip: Rooms 10 & 11, outside the garden, for stunning views and privacy. 8, 9 & 10 (in the old house) spacious and cozy. All with fireplace.

Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse is set in a stunning location and the farmhouse and grounds were beautiful. We had the two cottages - the cowboy room in particular was a big hit with 14 year old son. The food was really delicious and they catered well for the gluten free amongst us. The staff were all lovely and nothing was too much trouble. The weather wasn't great whilst we were there - it was quite cold - but that was ideal for long walks in the Drakensburg mountains on the farmhouse's doorstep. The log fires made up for the cold! We would definitely return if back in this stunning part of South Africa.

Cleopatra is a special treat for foodies. The primary reason for visiting Cleopatra is the food. Absolutely delicious and worth a special journey. We spent one night here. On arrival we had a 'snacky' lunch of cheese, biscuits and their cake of the day. Don't eat too much as the dinner is a 5 course affair! Richard prepares a different menu each evening and we were spoilt with chicken livers, pumpkin soup, prewns in buerre blanc, a heavenly lamb Wellington and finally a lemon curd tart for dessert. Our dinner was outstanding.
Accommodation is comfortable, there are electric blankets provided as it gets cold at night. Breakfast is a generous spread, as well as a few plated courses.
It's expensive, but certainly a worthwhile and memorable treat.
