The information on the hotel's web-page, while not exactly false, is certainly misleading. About half the rooms have a sea or mountain view; the others face the other apartments in the complex. 'Most rooms' according to the website, have a TV, private balcony and air-conditioning, but our self-catering apartment certainly didn't - the air-con - charged at an extra room rate of 40 Euros per week - was broken and though we asked for it to be mended this wasn't done. Neither did the hotel have an electric fan we could borrow. It is almost impossible to sleep in an enclosed room in June in Crete without cooling ventillation, and the numerous mosquitoes in the area made sleeping with the window open a real trial. Our 'balcony area' - part of the landing serving three different apartments - had very wide gaps in the guard rail, through which even a farily large child could easily have plummeted. This was very dangerous, especially if you have toddlers or younger children.

The decor - of our room at least - was entirely unlike the bright, new pictures shown on the website; our bed linen and soft furnishings, while clean were old and in some cases quite shabby. The bathroom also had elderly fittings but was clean although the drain blocked routinely making the shower flood the entire floor area. I suspect that the hotel had a make-over for it website photoshoot as this applies throughout: the clean new sun loungers and painted furniture shown by the pool on the website were certainly not in evidence during our stay. The furniture there was exceedingly old and some of the sun-beds repeat-mended and rickety. As was the 'kitchen area' in our apartment - serviceable but the cooker and fridge were patched / rusty and the drawer units bashed and dented. There was only one saucepan provided - an enormous stainless steel stockpot - and a lot of flat plates but no bowls. The overall shabby conditions in the complex were not what we'd expected from the rather misleading-looking website, which makes the Tsalos Beach Complex look quite bright and new, and I was rather disappointed when we arrived as a result.

On the plus side, the rooms were very well maintained by the housekeeping staff - cleaned and provided with fresh towels / bed linen every two days. Elderley sun loungers aside, the pool area was nice enough to relax in - though it was not supervised; we heard of one young man jumping in off a nearby roof, so it would pay to be extra vigilant in this area, espcially at busy times. Admittedly, we got a pretty cheap deal for our room - which may account for its various shortcomings, but having seen the hotel's website, I was unprepared for its actual condition.

The shop next door, also part of the complex, sells a good range of not overly-priced groceries and booze as well souviners; the hotel restaurant is fairly mediocre and not good value, and the beach sunbeds (which are as shabbby as the ones by the pool) regularly dusted and sprayed but are charged at a extra rate of 6 Euros per day, for two sunbeds and parasol. (We were initially told the sunloungers were free for hotel guests, but later on in the stay this apparently changed, so possibly this was a misunderstanding from the first - either that or they realized we weren't eating in the restaurant, nor were they getting any extra money from us due to the faulty air-con, so they decided to try and raise a little additional revenue in that way).

I would recommend this hotel for people looking for budget accommodation, who aren't particularly bothered about the condition or appearance of their lodgings. It undoubtedly has rooms even worse than our one; the one downstairs for example, that we were originally allocated was shaded and dingy-looking as it received no sunlight, being on a lower floor.
