“Not for honeymooning couples or food lovers.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 April 2012

We choose this hotel for our honeymoon due to the alledged five star rating given by both Jet2 holidays and thomsons, and also due to its location between Villamoura and Albufeira.
The first thing you notice on arrival is only 4 stars on the hotel sign. Bad start.
First impresions were good the staff were friendly and helpful, the hotel spotlessly clean and our room was ready on arrival despite arriving early. Initially the room looked great until we opened the curtains to reveal a view of a main road and some wasteland, despite requesting a sea view room on booking the holiday. The beds are dreadful too, dont expect a double as the hotel doesn't have ANY, just twin beds pushed together, and the matresses are rock hard.
We asked to move to a seaview room, and as previously mentioned the staff were again very helpful and moved us as soon as possible, to a room with a seaview that smelt of vomit. Again the staff quickly remedied this on complaining. A special mention must be made to the cleaning staff who did a fantastic job for the duration of our stay.
The hotel is also not fully open yet, only the main restaraunt and bar, the grill/asian restaraunt and two pool bars and snack bar were both shut, and the childrens area appeared to have been shoe horned into the main bar area, resulting in childrens entertainment at 8pm in the evening when you should be relaxing. This is not stated on the holiday description/literature when booking.
As a result of these closures only the main restaraunt remained open, which was a major dissapointment, as was the food. Plenty of choice but became really repetitive and bland within a few days, which resulted in us eating out for most of our 10 day stay, a big let down after choosing all inclusive.
The internet service is slow, unreliable and costly, 5 euro for an hour is a rip off for a sub standard service.
On one day we requested an early breakfast due to going on an outing for the day. On arriving in the restaraunt the only choice was cereal without milk, lukewarm water for beverages, and stale rolls to be filled with meat and cheese that had been left uncovered all night.
Entertainment, as has been mentioned on previous reviews, is more of an excuse for the in house entertainment team to massage their own enormous egos. Consisting of camp miming and arsing about on stage, in what can only be described as a poor mans Benny Hill show.
The sunday evening live duo were excellent however.
A few positives, the bar and restaraunt staff were great throughout, friendly and efficient. Hotel cleanliness was spotless at all times.
In summary a really nice hotel in a good location with great staff, let down massively by lousy beds, bad food, facilities not being fully open, an 8pm childrens show in the main adults bar and bad enterainment. Would not stay again.

Wow wee amazing spot ..For couples ,families young and old..
To start we booked monarch from manchester no problems were met by our choosen transfer company yellowfish transfers booked online . Very impressed on time ,clean cars and 2 lovely chaps driving us . We didnt want to do a shuttle they are not cheaper and take much longer .
Our hotel was really fabulous very special . Most fantastic reception area looking over the pool area which by the way is huge. Surrounded by gorgeous gardens.
The hotel rooms are lovely and spacious and modern.
It was all inclusive and when i say it catered for everyone it really did noone would go hungry here . Very good food witj a massive choice.
The beach is very nice big and has a lovely backdrop of reddy coloured cliffs .sea was chilly though.
We really hope to go again it was pricey enough but well worth it ..

Chose this as a last minute holiday and booked before I read the reviews! Went with Thomson who were excellant. After booking I rang Thomson and requested a room higher up and preferably with sea facing room and this is exactly what we were given. Everything was just as the description I'd read -not pretentious but remarkably clean, comfortable & very friendly staff. We enjoyed the food but we're pretty easy to cater for and we thought the choice was very good. However we did hear the odd moan from a few Brits who were clearly pretty unadventourous with their tastes and probably only eat junk food -the hotel do pizza but not hamburgers. Can imagine in season this hotel would be very different though. Not a good choice for those who find children irritating and noisy as the few that were there did tend to dominate the areas including the indoor pool, sauna & steam room which I thought was rather antisocial of their parents. Wonderful beaches and a pretty fishing village a close walk away with loads of interesting resaurants and bars. As we were all inc though we didn't really try these, but on the odd occassion it was nice for a change and we found them very reasonable. Would certainly recommend this, but probably out of main season.

Room Tip: Higher floors and away from the lift is preferable, and ask for sea facing room otherwise you might...

Just returned from a week at the "All Inclusive" Riu Guarana after a fabulous stay !
Riu have excelled themselves with both the facilities & especially the staff at this hotel.
The food was varied and of excellent quality throughout the week. The pool/gardens are extensive and very well maintained.Cleanliness could not be faulted either in the rooms or public areas.
A special word of praise for the entertainments staff who were certainly entertaining and produced most of the evening shows themselves.
Overall probably the best hotel we have stayed in for many a year and will be returning in September.

Just returned from 10 days away.. and I could not fault this hotel... an excellent experience from beginning to end.
Riu high standards throughout.. but the friendliness and professionalism of the staff made the holiday.
It caters for all age groups and nationalities .. the mix adds to a lovely atmosphere. I cannot understand any of the previous negative reviews.. we are regular travellers throughout Europe and the Caribbean and research hotels so we can enjoy high standards.. the Guarana did not disappoint... no unruly children.. well controlled bar service.. 5* for ..cappuccino's :o).
Rooms may not be large but well appointed and very comfortable.. towel service, early breakfast service.. internet support.. need I go on..
Restaurant - good variety, well presented .. small amounts cooked often to ensure freshness.. the 2 other restaurants were not open so early in the season, but we don't feel we missed out.
Steps at back of the hotel.. and side of sister hotel Riu Algarve Palace... now be prepared for over 300 steps...but worth it .. the beach was excellent. The resort Olhos D'Agua.. retains some of it's charm.. not overly manufactured.. Taverna Forte.. worth a visit.. also fishermen can provide some entertainment!!
Worth touring around, Alvor (old town) and Carvoeiro.. pay a visit.
We will definitely return to the Guarana!! and if you are thinking about it.. just go ahead and book it!!

Room Tip: pool view.. has side sea view
