“Riu at their very best”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 April 2012

Just returned from a week at the "All Inclusive" Riu Guarana after a fabulous stay !
Riu have excelled themselves with both the facilities & especially the staff at this hotel.
The food was varied and of excellent quality throughout the week. The pool/gardens are extensive and very well maintained.Cleanliness could not be faulted either in the rooms or public areas.
A special word of praise for the entertainments staff who were certainly entertaining and produced most of the evening shows themselves.
Overall probably the best hotel we have stayed in for many a year and will be returning in September.

Just returned from 10 days away.. and I could not fault this hotel... an excellent experience from beginning to end.
Riu high standards throughout.. but the friendliness and professionalism of the staff made the holiday.
It caters for all age groups and nationalities .. the mix adds to a lovely atmosphere. I cannot understand any of the previous negative reviews.. we are regular travellers throughout Europe and the Caribbean and research hotels so we can enjoy high standards.. the Guarana did not disappoint... no unruly children.. well controlled bar service.. 5* for ..cappuccino's :o).
Rooms may not be large but well appointed and very comfortable.. towel service, early breakfast service.. internet support.. need I go on..
Restaurant - good variety, well presented .. small amounts cooked often to ensure freshness.. the 2 other restaurants were not open so early in the season, but we don't feel we missed out.
Steps at back of the hotel.. and side of sister hotel Riu Algarve Palace... now be prepared for over 300 steps...but worth it .. the beach was excellent. The resort Olhos D'Agua.. retains some of it's charm.. not overly manufactured.. Taverna Forte.. worth a visit.. also fishermen can provide some entertainment!!
Worth touring around, Alvor (old town) and Carvoeiro.. pay a visit.
We will definitely return to the Guarana!! and if you are thinking about it.. just go ahead and book it!!

Room Tip: pool view.. has side sea view

We had a brilliant holiday
Lovely hotel
No kids messing with food - the restaurant was perfect, lots of variety of excellent food with great staff.
Entertainment wasnt your usual UK style but we enjoyed it, and the kids loved it. If it wasnt too good it made us laugh but the entertainment team at the hotel are great and work really hard, they have something on for adults and kids all day long.
The hotel is 2 mins walk round the corner to shops and bars and I would say about 10 mins further to a lovely beach down the road.
You can get to the beach from steps near the Rui Palace but this beach is quite small and you have to climb over rocks then to get to the main beach. There are some other steps going through another hotel to another beach and this one is fine too but we liked going down the main road and that beach best.
There is a free shopping bus from hotel to Albufiera shopping centre which is worth a trip and also we got the bus from the town to Villamoura which cost 3 euros each. A taxi was only 13 euros back too.
Dont be put off by the odd bad review with this hotel, it is almost perfect.
The only thing I didnt like was the pools were freezing, even the indoor pool wasnt pleasant , apart from the jacuzzi. That is the only thing that would have made our holiday better.
Thank you to thomson and the staff at the Guarana for a great holiday

Room Tip: Pool views are also sea views , an odd number room gives you a pool/sea view and they were lovely

Brilliant! The best holididay that I have ever had. Good quality and variety in food and hyginic in every spot of the hotel. Absolutely explicit! Good for kids as it has clean pools indoor and out with a friendly kids club which is open 9:00am-6:00pm. They're is also a mini-disco. Peaceful nights and lovely rooms with staff who loved their jobs. All of the staff were great with the kids by playing tag, hide and seek and stuck in the mud and also pretending that they were going to push them in the pool. We all loved it.
WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND THIS HOTEL!!!

Just got back from a week at the RIU Guarana, and overall we all (that's a family of 4 with 2 teenage boys) enjoyed the experience. However, we maybe were a little lucky. When we first arrived the hotel was full and (as previous reviews have said) there were many families with young children. The hotel obviously is marketed as a family venue. Maybe Spanish / Portuguese children are allowed to express themselves more than we are use to, and there was a feeling of massed ranks of kids running around making a lot of noise. Frankly, if the week had been the same throughout we would not have had such a good time. However day two (Good Friday) many of these families left, perhaps for a more traditional Easter at home? There was a small influx of Brits, but the hotel remained about half full - and much more peaceful!

The hotel is very clean (even my other half was impressed and that's saying something...) and the staff good - very helpful and friendly. The rooms are big enough and well equipped, good bathrooms and even a good selection of UK TV channels. We were all inclusive and found the food generally of a good quality. The other restaurant (that was alternating Asian and Grill food when we were there) was OK, but the food pretty much the same as the main buffet. It did have a feeling of a more adult atmosphere, but not so different really. Yes, the menu was repetitive but there was a wide range to choose from including various meats, fish and pasta. The repetitive nature is no different from other AI's we have been to, but the quality was good. I have to agree with previous reviews about the evening entertainment - it was not very good, made all the worse by the fact that there is only one bar and that is in the same area as the evening 'show' (if that's what you call it). Maybe there is a 'quiet' bar in the summer? The entertainment team do work hard, but the end results are not up to much.

The only other main point is about the beds which are very hard, and a long relaxing nights sleep was hard to achieve. Also the swimming pools (which are large) were very cold, but this was mainly due to the time of year.

Nice area, the village has some small shops and restaurants if you fancy something different and a small beach area. There is also a vast beach the other side of town, but a lot of steps to contend with. Albufeira is a short bus / taxi ride away, so something for all generations.

All in all, a good week away - but not sure how we would have felt if the massed ranks of kids had remained...
