Center Parcs Port Zelande
Reviewed 19 September 2011

When leaving for Port Zelande on the 22nd with my wife and 14 year old son I was
somewaht apprehensive based on the overall markings of the park.

I think anybody contemplating visiting Port Zelande should have in mind that
this is not the equivalent of an English full blown Centre Park. It does have
all the things you would expect but they are on a smaller scale. HOWEVER - the
price absolutely reflects this fact!!!!!!

Perhaps the overall assessment of the park stems from a comparison to a full
centre park like Longleat. This is where a little perspective is required: to
take us 3 to Longleat in the middle of the school holidays for a week would have
cost £1500 - £1600 whereas Port Zelande cost us £800 including the Stena line
ferry.

Having stayed in various caravans and tents on the continent over the years I
think the fairer comparison is to these sort of holidays which for the same
price give you one pool with one or two slides, many fewer other amenities and a
far worse living area, be it caravan or tent.

Having given the context there are some specifics that you should know:

1. Get a Marina view with your preference location - the marina is very
picturesque and provides a constant point of interest from your balcony (in our
case) or patio.
2. The 4 free toppings provided when you book are really useful we went bowling
twice and saved 20 euros each time.
3. Food is expensive but it always is in Centre Parks so get in the car and
shop in Ouddorp at the C1000
4. The Market Restaurant provides buffets at 25 euros a time which is expensive
but if you have kids under 12 they eat free. If you want this sort of meal then
the Petit Paris Bistro does a 19 euro buffet and is just outside the camp
5. To get there consider the Harwich - Hook of Holland Stena Ferry which in
comparison to Britanny Ferries is miles better and was quite quiet and realxed
both in and out and leaves you just 40 miles to drive in Holland
6. In France we just about muddle through the language based on schooldays and
the similarity of some words in french and english. In Holland this does not
work and we were totally at sea with road signs, menus etc so do a little
research before you go or else take a phrasebook.
7. Be aware that you will be very much in the minority as English people. The
park is predominantly Dutch, German and Belgium and therefore young kids are
not likely to "pal up" at the pool.
8. There is a massive sandy beach just outside the camp so bring buckets,
spades and kites

All in all we really enjoyed our stay the site does need a lick of paint in
places and new carpets etc but it is EXCELLENT VALUE FOR MONEY.

Room Tip: Gte one overlooking the Marina

We stayed at porte zelande for 4 days at the end of August and used the site as a base to visit amsterdam (1.5hrs away) , Eftling themepark (1 hour ish) and Brugge (1.5hrs) - it was really good location and the nearby beach is fantastic and only 5 mins walk from the park.

Its a small parc with mainly dutch and german visitors and limited restaurant facilities - but the location is very attractive. We had a chalet overlooking the Marina and it was comfortable despite being in need of refurbishment.

There are a number of english film channels (with dutch subtitles) and CNN news but alas no BBC

The centre parcs is showing its age but its great value and half the price of a similar stay at longlete in the UK. The main dissapointment was the food - the quality was poor and the cost was high. The supermarket has a very limited range more suited to the German guests. I suggest you stop at the local supermarkets in Hammestaat or Oudorp and stock up on food (and beer!) , they are very close and have a much better range of food.

Oudorp is a very attractive town with bars, cafes and ice creams - situated around the central church square.

The swimming pool is typical for a centre parks and if you are into any kind of water sport then this is the place for you. Sailing , canoeing, wind surfing, board sailing etc etc

The bike riding is a real treat with excellent cycle tracks and some great places to visit - you can hire bikes at the parc

It is a beautiful place and a great base from which to visit local attractions. We will visit agin - maybe with the grandchildren

We spent a long weekend at this park with our three children. Our house was quite nice, spacious and clean. The childrens' room had a bunkbed, but it didn't look safe to sleep on top. So our girls slept in the other room in a twinbed. The babycot was placed in the hallway upstairs. Our little two-year-old slept well in there, to our surprise.
The parc itself had a nice swimming-pool, three restaurants (we only tried the buffet-restaurant which had a excellent choice of food and great service), lots of activities and a bike-rental service. We also spent a day in capital Middelburg of the province of Zeeland and the beach of coastal village Renesse. All in all, we had a lovely time here and would come back again in a few years.

We stayed here 11 years ago when it was a Gran Dorado. It has not changed and it should have done. Centerparcs need to close it and gut it. It has massive potential and is a brilliant place. It has some lovely places localy like Zierikzee and a superb beach.
The accommodation needs complete modernisation. We had a 3 bed villa (668) overlooking the Marina and was in a great position but was too basic. A shame as it was spotlessly clean. The two cheap and nasty toasters we got through were replaced in 10 minutes both times by maintenance staff bur why supply rubbish toasters in the first plce. The tubo tunnel wasn't working all week either with no real apology or recompense. The free toppings we got were a good idea and we got a free game of bowling and one day bike hire out of it.
We didn't see an English car all week after 20 minutes from Eurotunnel and there are no brits anywhere around here. (this can at times be a distinct advantage can't it?!) All Dutch speak perfect English which is embarassing.
Our two eldest kids had a great boozy night out in Renesse which is like the Newquay of Zeeland and is a really amiable night out.
Some great local food from street stalls, fried fish, nieuw haring etc. Supermarkets small and busy but good.
Be aware our visa debit and Mastercard did not work in a lot of supermarkets and petrol stations. They need to be 'flat' without raised writing. Always have lots of cash from the machine in centerparcs. The centerparcs supermarket also took our cards but is quite expensive obviously.
We found Holland really expensive to drink out at night though to be fair to Centerparcs its not that much dearer to drink on site thatn off but there are somme really good local bars in Ouddorp, Scharendijke and Zierikzee. Rotterdam was a hairy place to drive in to but worth it. We did Delftshaven too and visited De Pelgrim Brewery. Superb.
Worth the 3 hour trip from Eurotunnel when Centerparcs have refurbished the villas. Aqua Mundo was great. Villas dead clean but so outdated. Villas also spacious and well designed. Good vfm but Euro rubbish so can be costly. Worth considering. Dutch people really cool. Most of clientele German then Dutch then Belgian. No Brits just us but then you become a novelty which can be fun in itself.
