Owner description: A beautiful church featuring a Venetian bell tower and a domed interior.

The courtyard of the church is off the main port area and not obvious from the outside. Entrance to the church is free. When you enter the church, immediately on the left is a picture of Mary and Jesus surrounded by jewelry. I read that a number of miracles/good outcomes have been attributed to the picture and those who received a blessing, came back and left a piece of jewelry. There is a very small museum outside upstairs that costs 2 euros. As you peak your head through the door, you can just about see everything there is to see. I paid the 2 euros anyways, as I feel it is fine to give a donation.

Looking at the church and possibly the museum is worth it – it only takes a few minutes, both are small.

This is a beautiful 'working' church and monastery. Just back from the bustling harbour but has a real feeling of tranquility. It doesn't take long to look around but it's well worth seeing (and free!) : ))

The monastery is small but exquisite, highly recommended as an attraction if you want to spend an hour or so soaking up a bit of the community culture and beliefs. Stunning decoration and unusual architecture. And best of all it's a fully functioning active part of the local community.

Visit around 11ish in the morning so you can enter the actual church (not in beach wear though) because this is a real treat. The cloisters square off on two tiers protecting the monastery in the centre. You'll see monuments to the navel heroes and rulers of Hydra from the 17th Century and inside the church you'll find one of the finest painted and gold leaf decorated domes. The cloisters are also home to the Ecclesiastical Museum which is also well worth a visit.

Unlike other Greek islands, Hydra can be done in one day tour when you stay in Athens... It will take 1.5 hrs flying cat (fast boat) from Piraeus, and once we arrive Hydra ports, it was an unforgetable feeling look at deep blue sea color with steps of building... I & my wife managed to hike to the hills & didn't regret as we got breathaking view of the port... You can walk around the island as no car in the island (but you can hire donkey if you lazy to walk).. many restaurants & shops beside 3 beautiful beach nearby... Highly Recommended
