We too were taken here by our tour guide, Upul, proprietor of Sri Lanka Tailored Tours. This was our first night n Sri Lanka as we had only flown into Colombo that morning. The tour guide is to be reccommended as this, as well as all other hotels which he arranged for us to stay in were excellent. As far as first impressions go Giritale Hotel was a superb choice.
We were fairly amused by the monkeys antics but not bothered by them. We heeded the 'monkeys beware, keep windows closed' sign in the room and had no further problems. We sat around the pool and saw them arrive, turn the tap on, drink and then scamper away, (wothout turning it off!). As pointed out by a former reviewer yes, the pod-like sun loungers are very uncomfortable! The area was clean and the pool looked inviting.
Our room was spacous, comfi sprung interior mattresses on the beds, adequate bathroom and all was spotless. The windows were fairly small and obscured the view of the 'tank' a vast man made lake which afforded spectacular views. We could have drank the view!
Food, was superb, there was a choice of hot cooked breakfast, cereals, a basket of rolls, toast, muffins and danish as well as a spectacular prepared fruit platter each. At dinner we were shown a menu with western dishes. Soup or salad, chicken or grilled fish. We were shocked and voiced our dismay, we were in Sri Lanka we explained, we would like to eat traditional dishes. The waiter said if we would wait 20 or so minutes he would organise something for us. Sure enough we were served a selection of delicious curries, sambals, rice & breads. 20 minutes was a short while to wait for such a banquet!

Would reccommend this hotel and would stay here again. Value, dont know as our tour guide booked and paid for it. I did enquire at reception the next morning as to the room rate per night and was told $90. We paid £245.00 each for the whole 7 day tour which included all accommodation, food and travelling. There couldn't have been much left for profit!

Yes a really lovely view.

Food (especially buffet breakfast) very good.

Nice pool.......................................BUT, area plauged by fearless monkeys. Partner's clothes stolen whilst swimming!! Staff reaction? Shoulder shrug!!

Apart from that.........................a very good hotel!!

The hotel was booked for me by my tour guide Upul. I was here again on holiday alone travelling with Sri Lanka Tailored Tours and on this trip was doing the cultural side of the country. Upul recommended the Giritale Hotel to be our base for the cultural triangle, Polonoruwa, Sigirya and Anuradapura. I stayed here for 3 nights while we went out on daily tours. The hotel was a haven to return to after the travelling. The location of the hotel in amongst the trees helps the feeling of seclusion and the escape I was looking for. The view of the Tank is wonderful (I love to be near water) but far enough away not to be bothered by the 'water wildlife'.
The food was good and the room comfortable - even had a fridge in the room and although didn't partake of the contents it was good to be able to cool off my bottles of water.
Didn't get a chance to go in the pool but it looked inviting.

The Giritale is situated on a hillside overlooking Lake Giritale and the jungle opposite - what a fantastic location. It is painted in dull greens to blend in with the surrounding countryside. The rooms are clean and comfortable - if only they had a balcony to sit on and admire the magnificent view. The gardens surrounding the hotel held a wealth of wildlife, especially an abundance of various lizards.

Unfortunately, like most of Sri Lanka, it is suffering from the decline of tourism, there were only four people staying at this hotel on the saturday night when I stayed there. Luckily this gave the chef all the time he needed to create masterpieces in the kitchen! The food not only looked as it was prepared by Gordon Ramsey it tasty pretty good too. All the staff were very polite and helpful.

i would certainly stay in this hotel again when visiting the cultural triangle.

Given previous experience in staying in the Polonararuwa area we chose the Giritale Hotel this time on the basis of reviews. We left with a really mixed bag of feelings after one night in late May.

On the plus side it is painted in a dull green which blends in with the hillside surrounding and it is relatively understated. The view over the Giritale tank and countryside is spectacular. The staff are helpful.

On the downside, the swimming pool is shabby and badly maintained; monkeys are a contant threat to your possessions if you are not close by them; the sunloungers are plastic curved pods on the grounds which pose a serious health & safety threat to anyone who does not have full mobility; the reception quoted prices in US $ but then said they only took rupees???; a warning that you should keep your room windows closed because monkeys burgle the rooms would have been helpful in preventing our room being turned over by langurs; food catering to western tastes, very well presented but very poor in quality & flavour...and definately the most watered down rice & curry we have ever tasted. Oh...I nearly forgot to mention a shabby attempt at breakfast packets when we wanted an early start the next morning.

If you live for a view then this is the hotel to choose, if you want more than this then I can only hope the management read this review and buck up their ideas.
