The hotel is beautifully situated but you need transport to go anywhere. The staff were friendly and helpful. The room was pleasant and the buffet breakfasts were good with plenty of choice. The evening buffet was mediocre, catering for western tastes and there were a lot of tour groups. For genuine Sri Lanka food, take a tuk-tuk to the Hotel the Village instead.

Not recommended. Noisy..This seems to cater mainly for the big coach tour groups of which there are many doing the rounds in the cultural triangle. Our downstairs room echoed every footstep from the corridor above, the aircon unit was about 30 yrs old and rattled so loudly it could be heard through earplugs, bathroom filthy, mouse droppings in the sink, shower and over the floor, smelt musty, beds uncomfortable, and when we complained first of all we were told sorry you can't move room as hotel full, i'll send a cleaner down..! then after a discussion we decided to leave, to which they got a little more interested, eventually offering to upgrade us, (though the hotel was full??) but the decision was already made and we left. Buffet dinner was very average, in fact below average. Keep going the extra 20 kms and stay in Polowaruna, more choices there. After all that's probably why you're there in the area.

We spent 2 nights here while visiting the ancient ruins at Polonnaruwa. The distance between the two was no problem (provided you have transport). The location of the hotel was lovely with great views. Facilities were of a high standard and there was also a laundry service which was most welcome! The only shortcoming was no hairdryer which is not uncommon in Sri Lanka and the standard evening buffet which is laid on for the tour parties and is virtually the same everywhere. Breakfast is much better. The staff went to a great deal of trouble to try and find a Scottish flag for our table but we settled for a Union Jack in the end. If you can get out in the evening, Hotel, The Village is a great place for genuine Sri Lankan food. (see separate review)

We stayed at this hotel while on tour, so can’t comment on the price/value. The hotel has a wonderful view of Lake Giritale—sit back with your Lion beer on the veranda and enjoy! The room we had was also great. Everything in good repair, strong air conditioning, lots of hot water, a view of the lake. Up on the top floor, probably one of the best rooms. Only thing that could have been added would have been a pot to make tea and an English TV channel. The TV only has Sri Lankan channels. There is no wifi in the rooms; didn’t check to see if there was a computer available. Hay, you really didn’t come to Sri Lanka to sit at a computer, did you? We ate the buffet dinner. While it was mostly bland Western food for the tourists, there was a nice selection of Lankan dishes, too. Fish, pork and chicken were cooked up fresh on a grill. The breakfast buffet was fine, with a good selection and cooked-to-order omelets. A good place to stay.

Room Tip: Room 306 was excellent.

Upon arriving at the Giritale, we were impressed. It had a nice open air lobby with a beautiful view of the lake, and welcome drinks were served. We enjoyed our stay until that point. Then we learned that there was no wifi - ok, we're used to that in Sri Lanka. But then they offered a internet-connected PC for $2USD/15 minutes. That might be the most ridiculous price I've seen for what should be a free service anyway. Things just got worse from there.

The rooms were old and worn - door and window seals weren't tight, letting in mosquitoes. Of the 2 nights we stayed there, they only had hot water once. When we called to complain, they asked us to just wait for the water to heat up again. Whether it was our first shower of the morning or at night, the water was cold. Housekeeping did not replenish our shampoo and soap, and it took them an hour to deliver these items to our room after our call. The pool is unappealing and old with some bugs floating around and the deck furniture is also old and no cushioning is offered for the hard plastic lounge chairs. As we sat on the deck outside the dining room, we asked for some tea. They charged is $4USD for something that again, should have been free. The following evening, we asked for 1 serving of tea this time. They brought out a much smaller teapot, but still tried to charge us $4. We complained, and the waiter chose to walk away rather than resolve this issue. So upon checkout when we were presented with the bill, we had to deal with this issue again, delaying our departure for at least 20 minutes while they dragged the manager out of bed.

All in all, a beautiful hotel at first glance, but definitely lacking in many ways. This was probably our most disappointing hotel during our time in Sri Lanka. We would not stay here again nor can we recommend it to anyone.

(Oh, the egg-chef seemed to be very nice and friendly. He seemed to be the only genuinely nice fellow at the hotel - everyone was somewhat cool under their veneer of friendliness).
