“Just the beach”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 April 2012

Came back from the Jolly Beach resort yesterday very disappointed with the overall experience. We stayed in the regular room, not the Superior. Our room did not have a dresser, in the bathroom there was no shelfs, and in the shower - a flimsy curtain and no room to put the soap and shampoo. I did not like the bed either: the matress feels uncomfortable. I would overlook the room as I love the beach and the amazing view, but the disappoitment did not stop there. The buffet restaurant did not provide the big variety of food choices. It's not that anybody would leave hungry, but for the tropical resort there was no tropical fruits. We were buying mango, passion fruit, and papay in the supermarket. The servers are pretty slow, and you would have to ask few times if you need anything. It was a surprise that they have a problem with the paper napkins, there were none for few days. We liked the a la carte restaurants. In the Italian restaurant the service was the slowest - almost 3 hours. It said in the tourist book that tourism is the major industry in Antigua, and you would expect much better service in this case as I visit other Carribean destinations: Jamaica, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Aruba, Bermuda, Bahamas. It hard to believe but from all these destinations, the Antigua experience was most unsatisfactory.

This resorted was very dated. When we arrived to our room the a.c. was making an extremely loud noise and our sink, toilet and tub were clogged. It took two phone calls and a several hour wait to get the bathroom issues resolved. We didn't complain about the a.c until the following day. After 3 calls and waiting a long time they finally replaced the a.c. A few days later the a.c. died again. We called twice in the a.m. and I went down to the desk and complained around 10 a.m. When we got back to our room after a half of a day in St. Johns shopping and a half a day on the beach we were ready to go get showered and ready for dinner. When we arrived at our room at 5:15 the guy had just shown up to fix the a.c. We waited while he messed with it and when he thought it was fixed he turned it on, it made a big clunk and quit. I just looked at him and said you need to leave so we can get cleaned up and come back in an hour. Well when we got back to our room we did have another a.c. but now it would only go on low, which in the hot and humidity wasn't sufficient but we were not going to mess with it again. The rooms were very run down in dire need of updating. The pool at the resort looked murky full of algae. The buffet they served three times a day had a lot to be desired. There were three other restaraunts on the resort you had to make reservations at. We ate at Lydias, which was ok, and the indian restaraunt which was ok. We didn't go to italian as they required men to wear long pants and my husband didn't bring long pants. Really? Who wants to wear long pants in the Caribbean when it is hot and humid? I think nice shorts would be sufficient. This resort was on a great beach and we did enjoy our time spent on the beach and swimming in the ocean but I would never go back or recommend Jolly Beach Resort.

Dear Kris,

Thank you for taking the time to write a detailed review of your stay. The room issues which you highlight should have been resolved before your arrival, and I do apologize that this was not handled in a more efficient manner.

With regard to your concerns about the pools, I can say with the utmost of confidence that we absolutely do not have the presence of algae at either the resort’s two pools. They are tested and treated on a daily basis and we have an in-house Health and Safety officer who attends to all matters pertaining to the comfort and safety of our guests.

We do have a dress code at our air-conditioned Italian restaurant, Bocciolo. Many of our guests enjoy having a dining experience of this caliber, but we understand that it’s not for everyone and our other restaurants offer a more casual option.

I am sorry that we did not win you over on this trip but I sincerely hope in the near future, we can be given the opportunity to guarantee you a Jolly experience.

We went to antigua for my husband & our friends 60th birthday, although i had read some bad reviews i didnt share my thoughts with my husband or friends as i wanted to keep an open mind
we had a fantastic time from 24th march til 4th april, we had super saver rooms & they were certainly very adequate for what we needed, always had clean towels, the rooms were always clean & we had flowers in the room. The reception staff were always very helpful & polite as were all the staff at all times. The buffet meals were very nice there was always a good choice of foods at all mealtimes. We had meals in all the a la cartes & were very impressed with the menus. On my husbands birthday 31st march we went to the Italian, the staff were excellent & decorated the table for us & brought out a cake the food was amazing it was a perfect end to a perfect day! We had been on a helicopter flight earlier in the day which for me was amazing!!
We spent alot of our time around the quiet pool which was lovely & not many people around, no problems of leaving our towels or other items!! The beach was always clean & tidy never had any problems with vendors .We found people in antigua were always very friendly, we used the local buses on several occassions which were very cheap & a good way to see the island.Overall jolly beach was an excellent choice of holiday & we would all certainly go back again. Very good value for money

We spent Easter at JBR and had a great time, the cricketers were an interesting diversion and offered entertainment on the hotels cricket pitch.
We had a suite which offered enough space for the two of us and room for more when entertaining. The rooms are a little tired, and the service as you would expect in the West Indies, so dont expect luxury.
The food was varied compared to many all inclusive hotels I have been to and we never had a problem booking the restaurants, maybe we were lucky!

Room Tip: We had a suite which was in a great position, our children had a standard room which was a little sm...

We stayed at this resort in March and had a really good holiday. We had a super saver room, which was very basic and would definitely have benefited from an update, but we decided that we weren't going to spend much time in the room and did not bother to waste money upgrading. The bed was ok and the room was cleaned well every day. The resort was a little tired in some parts, but the best part for us was the location. It is set on a beautiful long stretch of beach. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and helped make an excellent holiday. The food is nice, especially in the speciality restaurants. Overall I would recommend this hotel as excellent value for money, you have to remember it is only 3*, and for the beautiful location.
