You can't miss the signs pointing to Hunte's Gardens at just about every road junction in Barbados and you absolutely shouldn't miss following them and paying a visit to Anthony Hunte's breathtaking creation.
Completely inhabiting a deep crater this is far more than a garden - it's an immersive three-dimensional multi-sensory art work. At the base of the hollow, with palms towering above, you're submerged in a tropical deluge of colour, texture and aroma. There are strategically placed wicker arm chairs and and sofas for the visitor to stop, kick back and drink in the wonder of it all. Gentle classical piano music drifts in and out of the background. It's a dreamlike experience. Everything you see, foliage, furniture, even the paving stones is perfectly chosen and in just the right place.
As well as being a gardener of genius Mr Hunte is an urbane and welcoming host and you can quench your thirst - the garden can get pretty warm - on his charming verandah where he serves rum punch, beer, wine and soft drinks including delicious homemade ginger lemonade. There is also carrot cake and his own blend of rum.
This is a magical place - unforgettable. Not to be missed.More
