I was attending a conference and did not expect to see after landing at 04.00 what a beautiful view.

The hotel is a little dated but... it is wonderful for kids and for a romantic time, as well. The food is good and the events in the evening are good.

water park - great for kids. Great atmosphere and activities...
Food - huge improvement- enjoyed the wide variety
Rooms - everything works
TV - only downside - you need DStV and more variety for kids when they are indoors...your Zuku package just doesn’t cut if...

Overview
The hotel is located in Shanzu just before the Mtwapa bridge crossing. The location of this hotel makes its beach location quieter than other hotels in the North Coast where the beach area is busy. Opened in January 2017 and arguably the best hotel we have stayed in the North Coast to-date. The staff and services provided by this hotel are excellent with such great attention to detail.

Check in
Check in was very smooth and straight forward. We checked in at Noon and our room was ready. There were no welcome drinks or hot towels offered to us. However we noticed that this was offered later to other guests that arrived during our stay. This small gesture does play a key role to guests who have arrived at the Hotel after such a long journey.

Our Room
We had a booked a family room so were pleased to be upgraded to a superior room with a huge balcony and a great view of the aqua park and pool area. The room was extremely spacious and had a large King size bed and a bunk bed for the kids sectioned off just as you enter the room. The pillows were very comfortable and the kids bunk beds were comfortable too with a mosquito net provided.
The room was spacious and contained a divan and 2 swivel sofa chairs with plenty of comfortable cushions. There was a small rug at the centre and a large coffee table as well. The cupboards had adequate storage with hanger space for clothes and 2 drawers. There was a dressing table with drawers as well as bedside table with drawers as well. A mini fridge is available on request and once we called reception a mini fridge was delivered and plugged in within 20 minutes. The lighting was satisfactory. The room has an electronic safe which was easy enough to use. The bathroom had a walk in shower/wet room which was a great size and shower was powerful too. Adequate towels for use were provided as well as room slippers were supplied. A hairdryer is provided for use in the bathroom which was really annoying as restricted the use of the bathroom for everyone else and a longer cord would have been a better option. The bathroom door has an opaque glass which ideally not suitable for a family room and this was perhaps not thought off especially as the door was right opposite the bunk beds The bathroom could do with a little maintenance such as re grouting and sealant. Also the sink in the bathroom was very high and deep so we literally had to carry our 7 year old daughter so she could reach the taps and brush her teeth. A small bathroom stool could have solved this problem.

There is a patio door to the balcony and like with many hotels the AC turns off the moment the patio doors are opened. There were 2 chairs and a table in the balcony and a lovely area to relax and enjoy the view and fresh air of Mombasa. There is a luggage area for a large suitcase and many power points for phone charging near the dressing table and bed side table too. A large flat TV with many channels including satellite channels was well placed on the wall. The room had been beautifully designed with attention to detail as well as spacious. The paint on the metal bunk bed was peeling and the material on the sofa had tear marks as well as had been drawn on and not been repaired or rubbed off.
Housekeeping: The room was cleaned daily but the timings were not consistent. We were told the rooms would be cleaned anytime between 10 am and 3 pm and one day our room was not cleaned until 5pm. Our room rug had not been cleaned thoroughly when we checked in but a word with the cleaner plus a small tip went a long way and the cleaning standard after that was very high.

Breakfast
The range of choices at breakfast is indeed what makes this hotel very special. There were 3 types of cereals and Weetabix , yogurts, sliced bread, bread rolls, croissants, cake, danishes, bakery goodies and doughnuts. There is a waffle and pancake station with good choice of toppings. Local Swahili Porridge was also available. There was an egg station with eggs made to order as well as a buffet with a full English breakfast with multiple of options that varied daily. There were Indian choices as well as Swahili ones like Bharazi and Mahambri on certain days. There was a variety of fresh fruits too. Cashew nuts, dates, variety of juices and healthy juice corner made per your requirements available. Tea (English, Masala and Normal ‘mixed’ tea) and coffee was served at the table and one had to get attention of the waiters to get a refill. They also had gluten free and sugar free area. Breakfast was served from 7AM - 10:30AM.

Afternoon Tea
One huge bonus the hotel offers to half and full board guests is afternoon tea. This is served near the pol side area between 4-5PM. Fresh tea and pastries, Swahili snacks such as sweet potato, grilled corn on the cob, pancakes with toppings, fried fritters etc were available and menu varied from day to day. This service was really refreshing and ensured we could snack lightly before dinner at 7:30PM.

Dinner
Buffer style dinner with a different ‘theme’ every night. One night was Chinese/Oriental , one night was bbq , seafood and one night was traditional Swahili dishes. Despite the theme there was plenty of choice for vegetarians and to suit all kinds of taste buds. There was a huge range of salads and sauces. There was always spicy Indian and rice dishes with bread rolls, naan or ‘mandazi’ during the Swahili night. Chefs are there preparing fresh meals straight into your plates. Dessert choices were amazing with fruit choices as well. Dinner included a choice of tea or coffee at the end.

There is a childrens early dinner service at the Bistro and it runs from 6.30 to 7.30. We went to check it out and found the options very limited – only 4-5 dishes. However for those who wanted to feed their children early it was beneficial.

The Swimming Pool/Beach.
There are 2 swimming pools as well as an Aqua Park. The Aqua Park makes this resort so unique as in it’s the only resort we are aware of that has its own Aqua Park in Mombasa. The main pool is big and has a pool bar. There is also another separate pool located near the main restaurant. Swimming towels provided for hotel guests and you sign for them. The Aqua Park speaks for itself – an extremely well designed layout and a huge hit for kids and adults alike. There were two levels of water slides to cater for younger children and also the older more daring ones!. The kids would spend hours here and the main attraction within the aqua park besides the water slides was the killer whale shaped bucket which would fill with water slowly until it tipped over about every three minutes and splashed down to give the effect of a ‘storm’.

The beach access is via steps/stairs. Sadly the hotel does not have lifts or chair lifts hence for disabled people to access the beach is not an option unless they are carried down. The steps partially have handle bars but only in certain areas. The hotel has its own ‘private’ beach which is really unique for its guests to relax and enjoy without being hassled by beach vendors and beach touts. The ‘private’ beach leads to a public beach and the sea. There is a nightclub/bar build near the beach area for use by the hotel guests.

The kids club
The hotel had a kids club which runs from 10am to 8pm with a range of activities. The staff are really good and conduct a range of activities for the kids inside the play area as well as in the hotel compounds. Activities include making beaded chains and necklaces , painting, puzzles, quiz, movie nights etc.

Gym
The Gym is located outside the hotel which was a little annoying to get to but on our last day we saw a lot of construction and items being removed at the Gym and as there were no signs to apologise for the inconvenience , we asked the staff who informed us that the Gym was being relocated inside the hotel – this was amazing news considering it would make it so convenient for hotel guests to make the most of it. It seems the current location of the Gym was temporary and intention was always to relocate it inside the hotel premises. The Gym had the same entrance to the spa and massage treatment (see my photos as have uploaded a huge number of photos with this review). The Gym has a timetable of classes twice a day and towels provided when signing in. Water and detox drink available inside the Gym. Reasonable /average equipment and weights/weights machines were available but could be much improved. The classes were hit and miss and the personal trainer mentioned he relied on number of people turning up so sometimes we had some circuit sessions and at times just had to work out on my own. The Gym was full air-conditioned and always had a personal trainer at hand.

Location
The location of this hotel is excellent. Located in Shanzu and adjoining Serena Beach Hotel which is next door. There are two restaurants within the hotel – one for guest meals and the other for those who wish to order room/pool order. Food could be ordered at pool side and there was a good choice of starters, mains and desserts that could be ordered including drinks.
On our final day we requested a later checkout and we were granted a couple of extra hours. This meant we could make the most of the swimming and kids enjoyed the Aqua Park on the last day! Checkout was easy and we noticed the porters in the concierge took a little longer to get to the rooms to help with the baggage during checkout. We did not try the spa but have uploaded a photo of the prices and treatments.

Overall this hotel is one of the best we have stayed in. It literally ticks all our boxes. However we advise the management to focus on maintenance of this hotel. There are clear signs that of wear and tear in rooms and the bathroom needs a re-grout/sealant at the edges which is not painstaking but will give gests that clean fresh look. These are relatively easy issues to sort out and would really make the experience of staying in this hotel 5 star.
